You won't believe this! A Karate teacher who is confined to his wheelchair!
KAWANO Yoshiichi Sensei started Gojuryu karate at age of 16.
He trained hard and participated in world championships at age of 22.
12 years ago, he injured his spinal cord in a car accident and became a paraplegic. He was pessimistic about his future.
One day, when he played with his grandchildren, it occurred to him that he could teach karate to children because his height in a wheelchair was almost as tall as children.
He established his dojo 9 years ago, and started teaching children karate. Children makes him feel the joy of being alive.
To show his thanks to children, he participated in All Japan Karate Championships for handicapped people, which he won.

BEST SITE OF THE DAY:

I recently was listening to an X-M radio station show hosted by Bob Dylan (my favorite 'folk singer') and he talked about a song by Hank Williams entitled "No No Joe", which was a song directed at Joseph Stalin.

Here are the lyrics:

Now look her Joe quit acting smart
Stop being that old brazen sort
Don't you go sellin' this country short?
No, no, Joe

Just because you think you've found
The system that we know ain't sound
Don't you go throwin' your weight around?
No, no Joe

Coz the Kaiser tried and Hitler tried it
Mussolini tried it too
Now they're all sittin' around a fire and did you know
They're saving place for you

Now Joe you ought to get it clear
You can't push folks around with fear
Coz we don't scare easy over here
No, no Joe

What makes you do the things you do?
You gettin' folks mad at you
Don't bite off more than you can chew?
No, no Joe

Coz you want a scrap that you can't win
You don't know what you're getting in
Don't you go around leading with your chin?
No, no Joe

Now you got tanks some fair size tanks
But you're acting like a clown
Cause man we got Yanks don't mess with Yanks
And you might get caught with your tanks down

Don't go throwin' out your chest
You'll pop the buttons off you vest
You're playing with a hornet's nest
No, no Joe

You know you think you're somebody we should dread
Just because you're seeing red
You better get that foolishness out of your head
No, no Joe

And you might be itching for a fight
Quit braggin' about how your bear can bite
Coz you're sitting on a keg of dynamite
No, no Joe

I love the line "Just because you think you've found the system that we know ain't sound".

The song has a somewhat fascinating history, as Hank Williams didn't record it under his name, but instead under the name "Luke the Drifter" for fear of a counter-reaction against it that would impact his popularity.  His more religious, moral and political songs were recorded under this name.  What does this tell us about the biases in popular culture circa 1950s?

You can hear the song here:

DR. PEPPER BEGS AXL ROSE TO RELEASE CHINESE DEMOCRACY, HILLARY CLINTON'S WHACKY RELIGION, FREE MISS TIBET, THE WORST HEADLINE OF ALL TIME (SEE BEST OF), HELLO KITTY RECTAL THERMOMITOR!

Dr Pepper is encouraging (ok, begging) Axl Rose to finally release his 17-year-in-the-making belabored masterpiece, Chinese Democracy, in 2008. In an unprecedented show of solidarity with Axl, everyone in America, except estranged GNR guitarists Slash and Buckethead, will receive a free can of Dr Pepper if the album ships some time -- anytime! -- in 2008.

New global warming movement says adapting to global warming is cheaper than taxing and spending billions to prevent potential problems

There's a reason Hillary Clinton has remained relatively silent during the flap over intemperate remarks by Barack Obama's former pastor, Jeremiah Wright. When it comes to unsavory religious affiliations, she's a lot more vulnerable than Obama.

You can find all about it in a widely under-read article in the September 2007 issue of Mother Jones, in which Kathryn Joyce and Jeff Sharlet reported that "through all of her years in Washington, Clinton has been an active participant in conservative Bible study and prayer circles that are part of a secretive Capitol Hill group known as "The "Fellowship," also known as The Family. But it won't be a secret much longer. Jeff Sharlet's shocking exposé The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power will be published in May.

Cheyenne Autumn was received not too successfully. I still think it was a very good movie. It was kinda Ford's apology for the way he had treated Indians in his past pictures. Richard Widmark

John Hughes may have disappeared into the wilds of northern Illinois, but the young actors and actresses whose careers he helped launch have continued to grow and thrive. Some of them are still famous enough that we don't need a refresher -- who doesn't know that Matthew Broderick starred on Broadway in Mel Brooks' "The Producers"? But some of the biggest stars of the Hughes era have dropped a bit below the radar in recent years. Nearly 24 years since the premiere of the first feature Hughes directed, "Sixteen Candles," we catch up with Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson and others.

A chemical engineer with an MBA, Derek was a business consultant, while Sonja, a tax lawyer, worked in human resources at eLoyalty (ELOY), a management consultancy. Now there was a profession that spoke to them. "We'd played around with making beer and wine at home," Derek says. "There's a sense of satisfaction in seeing something we made on the shelf."

In 2008, it's hard to believe that comic books could be the centre of heated political disputes, but in early days of the Cold War, comics were as controversial as communism. In his splendid new cultural history The Ten-Cent Plague, respected U.S. cultural critic David Hajdu vividly brings this half-remembered debate to life, showing that the fierce struggle over comics was an important battle in a cultural war over youth and freedom that continues to rage to this day.

There is a technology war coming. Actually it is already here but most of us haven't yet notice. It is a war not about technology but because of technology, a war over how we as a culture embrace technology. It is a war that threatens venerable institutions and, to a certain extent, threatens what many people think of as their very way of life. It is a war that will ultimately and inevitably change us all, no going back. The early battles are being fought in our schools. And I already know who the winners will be.

This is a war over how we as a culture and a society respond to Moore's Law.

Double Star, An extravagantly improbable space-opera of a novel, this classic work of science fiction anticipated more than just the 2000 Turner prize

In 1968, when Charles Hall tried to apply for a patent on the waterbed he thought he had invented, he found he was unable to do so because Heinlein had already described one in sufficient detail in Double Star (and other places). This impressive bit of technological pre-empting sits neatly alongside the fact that the book is generally cited as the first to use the abbreviation "ET" (or at least, eetee). Elsewhere, there are dozens of other inventive ideas, which may not have been realised, but do sound cool. There's real appeal to a sealed off "Hush Corner" noise reduction areas for intimate conversations in crowded bars, for example, while "Bounce Tube" pneumatic transport systems for people might do a lot to improve commuting.

In common with much of the best SF, it's not just the scientific ideas that make this book worthy of investigation. History does too. The political concerns and philosophy that Heinlein chooses to project onto his imagined future also provide an intriguing barometer of his times.

Great UK report on the South By Southwest music festival:

Annual deaths from drug use (about 2,000) are still minuscule compared with those related to alcohol and tobacco (about 160,000). The only way to make our streets safe is to wipe Drugs Inc off the map. The only way to do that is to legalise the trade.

After the Tate murders, Manson and some of his followers hid for months at the remote Barker Ranch in California's Death Valley, where they were eventually arrested.

The area, the setting for episodes of television's Bonanza and The Lone Ranger, was a magnet for hippies and drifters. Police heard stories of many youngsters who hitchhiked in, stopped at the ranch and were never seen again; but resources and technology were not available to search for them.

Since 1998 a brutal war has been raging in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Over 4 million people have died. And there are the uncountable casualties: the many tens of thousands of women and girls who have been systematically kidnapped, raped, mutilated and tortured by soldiers from both foreign militias and the Congolese army.

The world knows nothing of these women. Their stories have never been told. They suffer and die in silence. In The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo these brave women finally speak.

"When I first saw it on the conference portion of the SXSW website, I knew I'd be there: a conversation between Thurston Moore, the singer and guitar player in pioneering art-rock troupe Sonic Youth, and Steve Reich, the heralded American minimalist composer whose percussion masterworks include "Drumming" and "Music for 18 Musicians." Moore, at 49, is arguably the wisest elder of indie rock, his band Sonic Youth having cranked out some 16 albums since forming in the early 80's, while Reich, who is 72, is arguably the greatest living American composer, having influenced a subsequent generation of artists bridging classical music, rock, electronica, and even hip-hop."  http://www.dmwmedia.com/news/2008/03/16/sxsw-conversation%3A-thurston-moore-%2526amp%3B-steve-reich

The secret of a moose's exceptional hearing is down to its antlers, apparently. Scientists have discovered that those cool, gnarly things that look so fabulous perched atop the furry freaks act as amplifiers, allowing Mr Moose to be able to hear things up to 2 miles away. Added to the animal's already acute hearing—it's to do with its large ears that rotate in almost every direction, apparently—antlers improve the beast's audio capacities by as much as 19 per cent.

Three FBI agents were finishing a meeting with a female federal prosecutor in the federal courthouse in Boston in 2006 when one of them came up behind her, wrapped his arm around her neck and gave her a Three Stooges-style noogie, according to several law enforcement officials.

Now, after a yearlong investigation by the Justice Department into whether the incident was foolish horseplay, bullying, or harassment, the FBI has concluded that all three of the male agents should be fired, said the officials, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Sent in by Richard Crowe: I was intrigued by the lucky charms encased within what seemed to be a dire and forboding figure, and so i asked who "he" was, but i was quickly corrected: La Santisima Muerte is a SHE. I was then given a long story of how she keeps men faithful to their wives and will judge and kill men who violate the sanctity of marriage if called upon to do so, because her husband was unfaithful to her, causing her to commit suicide, and to hate and punish all unfaithful men

The shop owner, Mrs. Cantu, even took me in a corner, away from my husband and taught me how you perform a seven-knot spell for La Santisima Muerte -- it's virtually identical to the hoodoo nine knot spell for a Nation Sack, but you keep the knotted string that has been smeared with semen tied around her statue, for safe-keeping. The statue is actually designed with a groove around the base to accept the wound-up string. After that, she gave me a Santisima Muerte holy medal as a gift and told me with smiling eyes to not let my husband see it.

THE cardsharp playing blackjack at the Riviera Hotel & Casino didn't say "hit me," but he got hit anyway, and hard. After a remarkably profitable run at Riviera's tables, the man was dragged off by a casino security detail and hustled into a room, where he was promptly pummeled.

The scene, part of the beat-the-dealer movie "21," which opens Friday, is not exactly a slam-dunk sales pitch for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Yet the Riviera's representatives said they had no problem having the loosely factual story of a team of card counters be filmed on their casino floor.

It's a curious turnabout given the film's source material, the 2002 book "Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas for Millions."

That second finding is a surprise because prior studies have shown that married people tend to be healthier than singles, said researcher Julianne Holt-Lunstad.

The following lists relics and miraculous images in a way to be of more convenience to those interested in visiting them. No attempt has been made to verify the miracles accounted or the historical truth of the relics, but what they have in common is that they are all venerated by individuals who believe them to truly be a link to the saints and to God. Unless otherwise noted, all of these saints are Roman Catholic saints and their relics are enshrined in Roman Catholic Churches, but some Orthodox saints, as well as the uncanonised martyr Oscar Romero, are included as well. Have you seen Mad Monster Party lately? "Featuring the final screen 'appearance' of horror icon Boris Karloff, Mad Monster Party was co-written by comics legend Harvey Kurtzman, creator of the original Mad comic books, and featured character designs by cartoonist Jack Davis of Mad Magazine and EC comics — a genius at combining humor and grotesquerie." Or how about Down and Dirty Duck? "Likely assembled as a quick cash-in on the underground success of Ralph Bakshi's Fritz the Cat, Down and Dirty Duck was put together with the assistance of erstwhile Turtles (and Mothers of Invention) Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (nee Flo and Eddie), who contributed voice, music and plot elements. (The duo's former employer, Frank Zappa, makes a cameo appearance during a particularly bizarre segment in which his head rises, sunlike, in the sky over the main characters.)"

FOR THE FIRST TIME AT ALL NIGHT SURFING: 2 POSTS IN 1 DAY. ARTHUR C. CLARKE HAS DIED.

Arthur C. Clarke, a visionary science fiction writer who won worldwide acclaim with more than 100 books on space, science and the future, died Wednesday in his adopted home of Sri Lanka, an aide said. He was 90.

Clarke, who had battled debilitating post-polio syndrome since the 1960s and sometimes used a wheelchair, died at 1:30 a.m. after suffering breathing problems, aide Rohan De Silva said

Sixty years ago this month, in October 1945, the magazine Wireless World published an article by a relatively unknown writer and rocket enthusiast. Its title was: "Extra-Terrestrial Relays: Can Rocket Stations Give World Wide Radio Coverage?" Today, the author's name is known throughout the world. He is the science fiction writer Arthur C Clarke, and his prediction of satellite communications has come true in ways even he never imagined. To mark the anniversary, Heather Couper travels to Sir Arthur's home in Sri Lanka to hear his own story.
