Oscar, the most famous resident of Okefenokee Swamp Park in southeastern Georgia, is being immortalized nearly a year after his death.
Oscar was a 4.2-metre-long, 450-kilogram (992 pounds) alligator. He roamed the swamp from the time the park opened in 1946 until his death last summer, drawing the stares of countless thousands of tourists. Now officials are assembling Oscar's skelton and plan to put it on display, much like a museum dinosaur.

The Dutch cabinet has proposed a ban on the sale of all hallucinogenic "magic" mushrooms because they could induce life-threatening behaviour.
In recent years the Netherlands has looked to shed its "anything goes" image and has tightened laws on drug use and prostitution. "If they succeed with this mushroom ban then I am sure they will try to ban things like cannabis as well. This is part of a wider trend," said Freddy Schaap of the VLOS.

The Hell Fire Club! The club motto was Fait ce que vouldras (Do what thou wilt) from François Rabelais, later used by Aleister Crowley. According to Horace Walpole, the members' "practice was rigorously pagan: Bacchus and Venus were the deities to whom they almost publicly sacrificed; and the nymphs and the hogsheads that were laid in against the festivals of this new church, sufficiently informed the neighbourhood of the complexion of those hermits." However, these activities were, according to Noblitt and Perskin, to cover the real reason for the club's existence - sexual activities. Many of the Hell Fire Clubs were allegedy created to provide male members with opportunities for "sexual debauchery" [11]. Female "guests" (a euphemism for prostitutes) were referred to as "Nuns".

University of Minnesota college student Chris Jenkins was found in the Mississippi River in February of 2003. Minneapolis Police began investigating the case, which also caught the attention of two retired NYPD detectives. Turns out, Jenkins' death was the missing part of the puzzle for Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte. They think Jenkins connects dozens of other deaths around the country over the last decade. The stories are the same all over the country--an athletic, intelligent, well-liked college student goes missing. Because of extensive investigation by Duarte and Gannon, Jan Jenkins now says she knows exactly what happened to her son on the night he disappeared, Oct. 31, 2002. "Chris was abducted in a cargo van," she said. "He was driven around Minneapolis for hours and tortured. He was taken down to the Mississippi River and he was murdered. And after that, his body was positioned and taken to a different spot and then to a different point in the Mississippi River." Gannon and Duarte say they've discovered a link between Jenkins' death and the drownings of at least 40 other men in 25 cities in 11 different states.
These detectives believe there are multiple organized murder rings or clubs across the country that are in contact with each other in some way, a serial killer ring if you will. ......  Bram Stoker best known for Dracula, was the author of several other novels including this, his last novel. The Lair of the White Worm is also Stoker's strangest novel. Written as the author was dying, and possibly loosing his mind, it is an interpretation of the legend of the Lambton Worm, a giant snake-like monster sometimes considered a flightless dragon.

I am a granddaughter of Eiji Tsuburaya, who was in charge of the special effects in Godzilla. It was fascinating to see your article about the film by Peter Bradshaw (A monster of a movie, April 18). It was a good occasion for me to think again of the theme behind Godzilla at my age of 35. In the wandering period after the fatal defeat in the war, what did Japanese people see in Godzilla? Jessica Dimmock began photographing her series 'The Ninth Floor' after being approached by a New York City drug dealer several years ago. She was in the midst of completing her degree at the International Center of Photography for Documentary Photography and Photojournalism. She became interested in photographing the dealer and his daily deliveries. One such stop was the ninth-floor of an elegant apartment building in New York's Flatiron district. Last month, while I was driving down the Mississippi River on a magazine assignment, I had a curious experience in Rosedale, Mississippi. As I was eating lunch in a place called Leo's Market, a waitress mentioned that Rosedale is the place where the legendary bluesman Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil in exchange for musical genius (an event alluded to in -- among other places -- the Cohen brothers' movie Oh Brother, Where Art Thou). As if to prove it, the waitress handed me a wrinkled, typewritten transcription of a "vision" about Johnson's fateful moment that had appeared to bluesman Henry Goodman as he was traveling the road from Rosedale to Anguila. For the sake of posterity (and because I have never seen it elsewhere), I am publishing Goodman's "vision" in full below, as well as a postscript by Rosedale's Crossroads Blues Society. Even if we can understand that they weren't all primarily trained for the Shakespearean stage (with one exception), all in all, the results are often quite sad.
