WORLD PILLOW FIGHT DAY, WAIT A SECOND- GLOBAL WARMING ENDED 10 YEARS AGO? WHAT?, TOP BEACHES AROUND THE WORLD, WHY DO MOST RELATIONSHIPS FAIL?

Great UK report on the South By Southwest music festival:

Annual deaths from drug use (about 2,000) are still minuscule compared with those related to alcohol and tobacco (about 160,000). The only way to make our streets safe is to wipe Drugs Inc off the map. The only way to do that is to legalise the trade.

After the Tate murders, Manson and some of his followers hid for months at the remote Barker Ranch in California's Death Valley, where they were eventually arrested.

The area, the setting for episodes of television's Bonanza and The Lone Ranger, was a magnet for hippies and drifters. Police heard stories of many youngsters who hitchhiked in, stopped at the ranch and were never seen again; but resources and technology were not available to search for them.

Duffy asked Marohasy: "Is the Earth stillwarming?" She replied: "No, actually, there has been cooling, if you take 1998 as your point of reference. If you take 2002 as your point of reference, then temperatures have plateaued. This is certainly not what you'd expect if carbon dioxide is driving temperature because carbon dioxide levels have been increasing but temperatures have actually been coming down over the last 10 years."

Duffy: "Is this a matter of any controversy?"

Marohasy: "Actually, no."  http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,23411799-7583,00.html

Since 1998 a brutal war has been raging in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Over 4 million people have died. And there are the uncountable casualties: the many tens of thousands of women and girls who have been systematically kidnapped, raped, mutilated and tortured by soldiers from both foreign militias and the Congolese army.

The world knows nothing of these women. Their stories have never been told. They suffer and die in silence. In The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo these brave women finally speak.

"When I first saw it on the conference portion of the SXSW website, I knew I'd be there: a conversation between Thurston Moore, the singer and guitar player in pioneering art-rock troupe Sonic Youth, and Steve Reich, the heralded American minimalist composer whose percussion masterworks include "Drumming" and "Music for 18 Musicians." Moore, at 49, is arguably the wisest elder of indie rock, his band Sonic Youth having cranked out some 16 albums since forming in the early 80's, while Reich, who is 72, is arguably the greatest living American composer, having influenced a subsequent generation of artists bridging classical music, rock, electronica, and even hip-hop."  http://www.dmwmedia.com/news/2008/03/16/sxsw-conversation%3A-thurston-moore-%2526amp%3B-steve-reich

The secret of a moose's exceptional hearing is down to its antlers, apparently. Scientists have discovered that those cool, gnarly things that look so fabulous perched atop the furry freaks act as amplifiers, allowing Mr Moose to be able to hear things up to 2 miles away. Added to the animal's already acute hearing—it's to do with its large ears that rotate in almost every direction, apparently—antlers improve the beast's audio capacities by as much as 19 per cent.

Three FBI agents were finishing a meeting with a female federal prosecutor in the federal courthouse in Boston in 2006 when one of them came up behind her, wrapped his arm around her neck and gave her a Three Stooges-style noogie, according to several law enforcement officials.

Now, after a yearlong investigation by the Justice Department into whether the incident was foolish horseplay, bullying, or harassment, the FBI has concluded that all three of the male agents should be fired, said the officials, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Sent in by Richard Crowe: I was intrigued by the lucky charms encased within what seemed to be a dire and forboding figure, and so i asked who "he" was, but i was quickly corrected: La Santisima Muerte is a SHE. I was then given a long story of how she keeps men faithful to their wives and will judge and kill men who violate the sanctity of marriage if called upon to do so, because her husband was unfaithful to her, causing her to commit suicide, and to hate and punish all unfaithful men

The shop owner, Mrs. Cantu, even took me in a corner, away from my husband and taught me how you perform a seven-knot spell for La Santisima Muerte -- it's virtually identical to the hoodoo nine knot spell for a Nation Sack, but you keep the knotted string that has been smeared with semen tied around her statue, for safe-keeping. The statue is actually designed with a groove around the base to accept the wound-up string. After that, she gave me a Santisima Muerte holy medal as a gift and told me with smiling eyes to not let my husband see it.

THE cardsharp playing blackjack at the Riviera Hotel & Casino didn't say "hit me," but he got hit anyway, and hard. After a remarkably profitable run at Riviera's tables, the man was dragged off by a casino security detail and hustled into a room, where he was promptly pummeled.

The scene, part of the beat-the-dealer movie "21," which opens Friday, is not exactly a slam-dunk sales pitch for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Yet the Riviera's representatives said they had no problem having the loosely factual story of a team of card counters be filmed on their casino floor.

It's a curious turnabout given the film's source material, the 2002 book "Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas for Millions."

The following lists relics and miraculous images in a way to be of more convenience to those interested in visiting them. No attempt has been made to verify the miracles accounted or the historical truth of the relics, but what they have in common is that they are all venerated by individuals who believe them to truly be a link to the saints and to God. Unless otherwise noted, all of these saints are Roman Catholic saints and their relics are enshrined in Roman Catholic Churches, but some Orthodox saints, as well as the uncanonised martyr Oscar Romero, are included as well. "Featuring the final screen 'appearance' of horror icon Boris Karloff, Mad Monster Party was co-written by comics legend Harvey Kurtzman, creator of the original Mad comic books, and featured character designs by cartoonist Jack Davis of Mad Magazine and EC comics — a genius at combining humor and grotesquerie." Or how about Down and Dirty Duck? "Likely assembled as a quick cash-in on the underground success of Ralph Bakshi's Fritz the Cat, Down and Dirty Duck was put together with the assistance of erstwhile Turtles (and Mothers of Invention) Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (nee Flo and Eddie), who contributed voice, music and plot elements. Arthur C. Clarke, a visionary science fiction writer who won worldwide acclaim with more than 100 books on space, science and the future, died Wednesday in his adopted home of Sri Lanka, an aide said. He was 90.

Sixty years ago this month, in October 1945, the magazine Wireless World published an article by a relatively unknown writer and rocket enthusiast. Its title was: "Extra-Terrestrial Relays: Can Rocket Stations Give World Wide Radio Coverage?" Today, the author's name is known throughout the world. He is the science fiction writer Arthur C Clarke, and his prediction of satellite communications has come true in ways even he never imagined. To mark the anniversary, Heather Couper travels to Sir Arthur's home in Sri Lanka to hear his own story.

Marilyn Monroe's former best friend Jeanne Carmen died of lymphoma at her home in California on Thursday.

The B-movie actress was 77.

Born in Arkansas,
Carmen ran away from home as a teenager to seek her fortune in New York.

She became a model and burlesque dancer before developing a bizarre career as a trick-shot golfer, touring as part of Jack Reed's sports revue.

During a stop in Hollywood,
Carmen decided to give acting a go, and she quickly became a B-movie staple with her peroxide-blonde locks and shapely
figure.

celebration of JOHN F. KENNEDY's 1960 Democratic nomination victory speech
at the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles in 1960.

Among the attendees at the party were JEANNE CARMEN and MARILYN MONROE.

After a dip in the pool, Carmen retreated to a back bedroom to shower off.
Moments later Monroe knocked on the door and informed Carmen that Kennedy
had suggested a threesome. Carmen was astounded and told Monroe she didn't
do that. Monroe stated that neither did she but perhaps they should make an
exception for Jack because "he was going to be the President." Monroe then
added "We can think of it as doing it for the country."

The 26 Best Zombies of all time http://www.omghorror.com/article/66153/feature-the-26-best-zombies-of-all-time/

From Lisa Kezios: The music world and the Grateful Dead family lost a major talent and a good, good friend when reeds great Martin Fierro succumbed to cancer on Thursday, March 13.

Martin (pronounced mar-teen, but you can call him Meester, if you'd like) is probably best known by Dead Heads for playing sax and flute on the Dead's 1973 album Wake of the Flood and then being a regular member of the Saunders-Garcia band and the Legion of Mary between the fall of 1973 and the middle of 1975. But this fun and spirited cat had a very full lifetime in music before and after his association with Garcia.

BEST SITE OF THE DAY:

It is one of the enduring mysteries of the second world war. More than 800 Jews based in this hospital in the middle of Nazi Berlin survived the war, seemingly — and bizarrely — protected by Adolf Eichmann, the architect of the Final Solution. So who were they and why were they saved?

Happy Birthday L. Ron Hubbard!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY L. RON HUBBARD MARCH 15!

It's theme time again! As many of you know one of my heroes is L. Ron Hubbard, considered to be a genius by some, charlatan by others. Frankly, as an atheist, I think it's possible to be both when it comes to religion. When people say to me that Scientology isn't a real religion "because of space aliens" I generally laugh at them. Whole live human beings ascended to heaven as "real" religions believe Mary was (and the act being forgotten about until the 1800's!), Holy Ghosts impregnating virgins- I MEAN REALLY! The prisons are filled in America with people who are Christian, Muslim or Jew. WHERE ARE THE ATHEISTS?

Actually his birthday is the 13th, but the group Anonymous will be protesting on the 15th. WHATEVER!

A religion is distinct from a cult to me if it outlives it's founder, provides a community and has a set of values the community believes in. That's it. The actual nonsense, er, beliefs, I generally laugh at in all situations. But hey, in America you can believe in any stupid thing you want! How else to explain why the average American wants free health care and lower taxes at the same time?

The fact is Scientology does work for many people. Just as going to Mass does for Catholics, even if science can't find the moment when the DNA in a wafer becomes the body of Christ. As any SubGenius will tell you, SCIENCE DOES NOT REMOVE THE TERROR OF THE GODS!

Like tantric sex, it can be argued that Scientology has operations that would work without the religious connotations. But frankly I don't have time to argue that subject. Why aren't  I  a Scientologist? Well, these are the reasons I'm not really a joiner of any group:

1. I could never join the KKK for one simple reason. They supported prohibition and were anti- booze! I don't need to know anything else about the group. That right there stops me. That they were the earliest supporters of feminism is just icing on the cake! Early feminists also were anti-booze and supported prohibition!

2.  I could never go back to the Catholic Church because I don't believe Mary was ascended into heaven while alive. This happened after Jesus went to hell to free the non-existent beings like Moses. Oddly, there is no report that these people were tortured the way Christians and Moslems believe people in hell are now. When did this change? Why weren't the people Jesus took from hell being harmed- and why didn't the devil try to stop him, since the Bible says they are headed for a big war anyway?

3. I could never be a Scientologist because of one thing, and one thing only. At the start, the Church advises its members to stop being promiscuous! Look, the hottest babes are in Scientology. There is no way in heaven or hell I can join a Church that has so many babes and no one is sleeping around! Sorry. DEAL BREAKER! I don't have to hear anything else. THE END.

So let's look at the good, bad and just plain wild side of L. Ron Hubbard- a man I would have liked to have a beer with! Keep in mind, I'm also a fan of  Aleister Crowley- great poet!

The Church of Scientology strikes back! Online. Having grown tired of being hounded on the internet by the anonymous cyber-protest group "Anonymous," Scientology not only filed an injunction in court (which failed), but also posted its own counterattack videos to YouTube. Under the account name "AnonymousFacts," the main video charges the group with "hate crimes" against Scientology—characterizing the group as terrorists. Scientology also made separate videos "exposing" several individual members of Anonymous. And someone submitted those videos to Digg, and even started Wikipedia entries attacking the Anonymous members. It's a significantly different—and more sophisticated—strategy for Scientology, which usually relies on secrecy, intimidation, and litigation to get its way, rather than trawling for internet influence. The four full videos are below: First is the main one, "Anonymous- Hate Crimes & Terrorism Directed At Scientology," followed by three separate videos aimed at exposing specific Anonymous members.

Now right about now you're going, gee Mike, the ideas weren't even original! Real religions don't have that problem! WANNA BET!

Proposing A Messiah Before Jesus

Fifty-three years after the first Dead Sea scrolls were discovered in caves in the Judean desert and eight years after they became widely available, bitter arguments are still flaring over these inscriptions on animal skins that are believed to be the oldest existing records of the Judeo-Christian heritage.

Experts don't agree on such basic questions as who composed the scrolls -- which are in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, some just thumbnail-size scraps too faded to read -- or exactly when they were written, let alone their meaning. And scholarly dialogue has often taken the form of lawsuits and shouting matches.

But even by the standards of this unusually contentious field, two scholars are provoking particular controversy with an unconventional theory: Jesus was no original; he was scooped by an earlier messiah whose words are recorded in the scrolls.

Working independently, Michael O. Wise, a Christian professor at Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minn., and Israel Knohl, a Jewish professor at Hebrew University in Jerusalem have recently published books arguing that some of the scroll texts were written by a suffering, Jesus-like messiah who lived at least 50 years before Jesus was born.

I wouldn't feel smug yet Scientology haters! Unlike Christians and Moslems, there are no women stoned to death in Scientology, burned at the stake, wars of genocide, ongoing feuds to prove who God likes more! Here are some writings I've done before on Hubbard, and a very rare interview with him:

ENTER HUBBARD, DEL'S THERAPIST: Who was Hubbard, what was his practice and then Dianetics like? http://subgeniusslack.blogdrive.com/archive/13.html

According to Forrest Ackerman, Hubbard's former literary agent, Hubbard's vision appeared when he "died" on an operating table during the war.

Forrest J Ackerman, Hubbard's science fiction agent, poses with Ray Harryhausen and Ray Bradbury

"Basically what he told me was that after he died he rose in spirit form and looked back on the body he had formerly inhabited. Over yonder he saw a fantastic great gate, elaborately carved like something you'd see in Baghdad or ancient China. As he wafted towards it, the gate opened and just beyond he could see a kind of intellectual smorgasbord on which was outlined everything that had ever puzzled the mind of man. All the questions that had concerned philosophers through the ages - When did the world begin? Was there a God? Whither goest we? - were there answered. All this information came flooding into him and while he was absorbing it, there was a sort of flustering in the air and he felt something like a long umbilical cord pulling him back. He was saying 'No, no, not yet!', but he was pulled back anyway. After the gates had closed he realized he had re-entered his body."
"According to Ron, he jumped off the operating table, ran to his Quonset hut, got two reams of paper and a gallon of scalding black coffee and for the next 48 hours, at a blinking rate, he wrote a work called Excalibur, or The Dark Sword"

Hubbard "said that as he shopped the manuscript around, the people who read it either went insane or committed suicide. The last time he showed it to a publisher, he was sitting in an office waiting for a reader to give his opinion. The reader walked into the office, tossed the manuscript on the desk and then threw himself out of the window."
"He said it was in a bank vault and it was going to stay there. I think he was quite sincere. He seemed like a man who had seen too many people go crazy or commit suicide, who had enough on his conscience already. I never did get to see the manuscript or show it to any publisher. In fact, I never encountered anyone who said they had seen it."
      - Forrest Ackerman

L. Ron Hubbard has inspired artists, like Chick Corea:

T hough he's best known as a groundbreaking jazz artist, Chick Corea is also a stalwart fan of science fiction, reveling in the works of many of the great Golden Age authors. At the same time, he's a longtime acolyte of the teachings of L. Ron Hubbard.

The 12-time Grammy Award-winning artist recently fused these related passions on To The Stars, an imaginative new album based upon Hubbard's well-regarded 1950 story of the same name. Working with his legendary Elektric Band, Corea fashioned a daring and diverse instrumental expedition that ingeniously builds upon the tale's intrinsic and, for its time, quite innovative ideas.

As the following discussion reveals, the 63-year-old musician's unique tone poem not only explores and elaborates on the adventure's colorful characters, but also allows the composer to share his own ideas about the book, science-fiction writers in general and the overall musical nature of the universe.

http://www.scifi.com/sfw/issue391/interview.html

And Beck!

Both Campbell and Beck's mother, former Andy Warhol camp follower and punk singer Bibbe Hansen, are Scientologists of long standing. So is his stepfather, Sean Carillo. Beck himself reportedly returned to the fold with a vengeance after splitting from his long-term girlfriend, Leigh Limon, at the turn of the new millennium. Last year, he married the actress Marissa Ribisi, who is, like her movie-star brother Giovanni, also a Scientologist.
Beck has in the past admitted to having taken some of the Church's courses and made no secret of the fact that he "grew up around" Scientology, but he has previously been uncomfortable and evasive when quizzed about the depth of his personal involvement. One 2002 Canadian interview was even terminated by the publicist when the subject was raised.

So, as I make a cautious inquiry about the church's influence on his music, I am anticipating a similar brush-off. Instead, the query seems to energise him into singing Scientology's praises. "It's reinforced certain things that were really constructive and good," he says. "Things that were truly important to me in terms of my family, friends, being creatively awake and pushing forward with music. It helps look at these things and strengthens things that are the most important aspects of my life."

That all sounds positive and perfectly harmless, of course. But surely Beck would possess these same creative gifts without Scientology?

"Absolutely, but it definitely reinforces that," he nods.

Hey, I like Beck! I bet you do, too! Does it matter that he's a Scientologist? Not to me! Johnny Cash was a Christian, loved gospel music- but that won't get me to go to church!

BEST SITE OF THE DAY:

So, is Scientology a real religion?  http://www.theta.com/goodman/kliever1.htm

Saturday Scientologists will be confronted by the "group" anonymous who will be protesting them. I, on the other hand, will be sipping a brew and celebrating St. Pat's day, a day that brings together all religions, atheists, Irish and non- Irish in getting plastered. WOO WHO!

This is great! The top 20 record industry screw ups of all time! For example:
#19 The industry kills the single—and begins its own slow demise
In the early ’80s, the music industry began to phase out vinyl singles in favor of cassettes and later, CDs. Then, since it costs the same to manufacture a CD single as a full album, they ditched the format almost altogether. But they forgot that singles were how fans got into the music-buying habit before they had enough money to spend on albums. The end result? Kids who expect music for free. “Greed to force consumers to buy an album [resulted] in the loss of an entire generation of record consumers,” says Billboard charts expert Joel Whitburn. “People who could only afford to buy their favorite hit of the week were told it wasn’t available as a single. Instead, they stopped going to record shops and turned their attention to illegally downloading songs.”
Unintended consequence The Eagles still top the album charts.

Casinos are all about odds. If a player has shifted the odds into his favor, he can be asked to leave. But if a player simply wins a ton of money through sheer luck even though the odds are against him, the casino will do everything it can to lure the player back.

With colourful make-up of bright yellows, startling whites and rich earth-reds, flamboyant accessories and extraordinarily elaborate decorations, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the designs in these images originated in the fevered mind of some leading fashionista.

Yet far from the catwalks of New York, London or Paris, these looks are the sole creation of the Surma and Mursi tribes of East Africa's Omo Valley.

Inspired by the wild trees, exotic flowers and lush vegetation of the area bordering Ethiopia, Kenya and Sudan, these tribal people have created looks that put the most outlandish creations of Western catwalk couturiers to shame.
