Happy Birthday L. Ron Hubbard!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY L. RON HUBBARD MARCH 15!
It's theme time again! As many of you know one of my heroes is L. Ron Hubbard, considered to be a genius by some, charlatan by others. Frankly, as an atheist, I think it's possible to be both when it comes to religion. When people say to me that Scientology isn't a real religion "because of space aliens" I generally laugh at them. Whole live human beings ascended to heaven as "real" religions believe Mary was (and the act being forgotten about until the 1800's!), Holy Ghosts impregnating virgins- I MEAN REALLY! The prisons are filled in America with people who are Christian, Muslim or Jew. WHERE ARE THE ATHEISTS?
Actually his birthday is the 13th, but the group Anonymous will be protesting on the 15th. WHATEVER!
A religion is distinct from a cult to me if it outlives it's founder, provides a community and has a set of values the community believes in. That's it. The actual nonsense, er, beliefs, I generally laugh at in all situations. But hey, in America you can believe in any stupid thing you want! How else to explain why the average American wants free health care and lower taxes at the same time?
The fact is Scientology does work for many people. Just as going to Mass does for Catholics, even if science can't find the moment when the DNA in a wafer becomes the body of Christ. As any SubGenius will tell you, SCIENCE DOES NOT REMOVE THE TERROR OF THE GODS!
Like tantric sex, it can be argued that Scientology has operations that would work without the religious connotations. But frankly I don't have time to argue that subject. Why aren't I a Scientologist? Well, these are the reasons I'm not really a joiner of any group:
1. I could never join the KKK for one simple reason. They supported prohibition and were anti- booze! I don't need to know anything else about the group. That right there stops me. That they were the earliest supporters of feminism is just icing on the cake! Early feminists also were anti-booze and supported prohibition!
2. I could never go back to the Catholic Church because I don't believe Mary was ascended into heaven while alive. This happened after Jesus went to hell to free the non-existent beings like Moses. Oddly, there is no report that these people were tortured the way Christians and Moslems believe people in hell are now. When did this change? Why weren't the people Jesus took from hell being harmed- and why didn't the devil try to stop him, since the Bible says they are headed for a big war anyway?
3. I could never be a Scientologist because of one thing, and one thing only. At the start, the Church advises its members to stop being promiscuous! Look, the hottest babes are in Scientology. There is no way in heaven or hell I can join a Church that has so many babes and no one is sleeping around! Sorry. DEAL BREAKER! I don't have to hear anything else. THE END.
So let's look at the good, bad and just plain wild side of L. Ron Hubbard- a man I would have liked to have a beer with! Keep in mind, I'm also a fan of Aleister Crowley- great poet!

The Church of Scientology strikes back! Online. Having grown tired of being hounded on the internet by the anonymous cyber-protest group "Anonymous," Scientology not only filed an injunction in court (which failed), but also posted its own counterattack videos to YouTube. Under the account name "AnonymousFacts," the main video charges the group with "hate crimes" against Scientology—characterizing the group as terrorists. Scientology also made separate videos "exposing" several individual members of Anonymous. And someone submitted those videos to Digg, and even started Wikipedia entries attacking the Anonymous members. It's a significantly different—and more sophisticated—strategy for Scientology, which usually relies on secrecy, intimidation, and litigation to get its way, rather than trawling for internet influence. The four full videos are below: First is the main one, "Anonymous- Hate Crimes & Terrorism Directed At Scientology," followed by three separate videos aimed at exposing specific Anonymous members.
Now right about now you're going, gee Mike, the ideas weren't even original! Real religions don't have that problem! WANNA BET!
Proposing A Messiah Before Jesus
By EMILY EAKIN
Fifty-three years after the first Dead Sea scrolls were discovered in caves in the Judean desert and eight years after they became widely available, bitter arguments are still flaring over these inscriptions on animal skins that are believed to be the oldest existing records of the Judeo-Christian heritage.
Experts don't agree on such basic questions as who composed the scrolls -- which are in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, some just thumbnail-size scraps too faded to read -- or exactly when they were written, let alone their meaning. And scholarly dialogue has often taken the form of lawsuits and shouting matches.
But even by the standards of this unusually contentious field, two scholars are provoking particular controversy with an unconventional theory: Jesus was no original; he was scooped by an earlier messiah whose words are recorded in the scrolls.
Working independently, Michael O. Wise, a Christian professor at Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minn., and Israel Knohl, a Jewish professor at Hebrew University in Jerusalem have recently published books arguing that some of the scroll texts were written by a suffering, Jesus-like messiah who lived at least 50 years before Jesus was born. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C05EFDC1E3DF931A35751C1A9669C8B63&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=print
I wouldn't feel smug yet Scientology haters! Unlike Christians and Moslems, there are no women stoned to death in Scientology, burned at the stake, wars of genocide, ongoing feuds to prove who God likes more! Here are some writings I've done before on Hubbard, and a very rare interview with him:
According to Forrest Ackerman, Hubbard's former literary agent, Hubbard's vision appeared when he "died" on an operating table during the war.
Forrest J Ackerman, Hubbard's science fiction agent, poses with Ray Harryhausen and Ray Bradbury
"Basically what he told me was that after he died he rose in spirit form and looked back on the body he had formerly inhabited. Over yonder he saw a fantastic great gate, elaborately carved like something you'd see in Baghdad or ancient China. As he wafted towards it, the gate opened and just beyond he could see a kind of intellectual smorgasbord on which was outlined everything that had ever puzzled the mind of man. All the questions that had concerned philosophers through the ages - When did the world begin? Was there a God? Whither goest we? - were there answered. All this information came flooding into him and while he was absorbing it, there was a sort of flustering in the air and he felt something like a long umbilical cord pulling him back. He was saying 'No, no, not yet!', but he was pulled back anyway. After the gates had closed he realized he had re-entered his body." "According to Ron, he jumped off the operating table, ran to his Quonset hut, got two reams of paper and a gallon of scalding black coffee and for the next 48 hours, at a blinking rate, he wrote a work called Excalibur, or The Dark Sword"
Hubbard "said that as he shopped the manuscript around, the people who read it either went insane or committed suicide. The last time he showed it to a publisher, he was sitting in an office waiting for a reader to give his opinion. The reader walked into the office, tossed the manuscript on the desk and then threw himself out of the window." "He said it was in a bank vault and it was going to stay there. I think he was quite sincere. He seemed like a man who had seen too many people go crazy or commit suicide, who had enough on his conscience already. I never did get to see the manuscript or show it to any publisher. In fact, I never encountered anyone who said they had seen it." - Forrest Ackerman
L. Ron Hubbard has inspired artists, like Chick Corea:
hough he's best known as a groundbreaking jazz artist, Chick Corea is also a stalwart fan of science fiction, reveling in the works of many of the great Golden Age authors. At the same time, he's a longtime acolyte of the teachings of L. Ron Hubbard.
The 12-time Grammy Award-winning artist recently fused these related passions on To The Stars, an imaginative new album based upon Hubbard's well-regarded 1950 story of the same name. Working with his legendary Elektric Band, Corea fashioned a daring and diverse instrumental expedition that ingeniously builds upon the tale's intrinsic and, for its time, quite innovative ideas.
As the following discussion reveals, the 63-year-old musician's unique tone poem not only explores and elaborates on the adventure's colorful characters, but also allows the composer to share his own ideas about the book, science-fiction writers in general and the overall musical nature of the universe.

And Beck!
Both Campbell and Beck's mother, former Andy Warhol camp follower and punk singer Bibbe Hansen, are Scientologists of long standing. So is his stepfather, Sean Carillo. Beck himself reportedly returned to the fold with a vengeance after splitting from his long-term girlfriend, Leigh Limon, at the turn of the new millennium. Last year, he married the actress Marissa Ribisi, who is, like her movie-star brother Giovanni, also a Scientologist. Beck has in the past admitted to having taken some of the Church's courses and made no secret of the fact that he "grew up around" Scientology, but he has previously been uncomfortable and evasive when quizzed about the depth of his personal involvement. One 2002 Canadian interview was even terminated by the publicist when the subject was raised.
So, as I make a cautious inquiry about the church's influence on his music, I am anticipating a similar brush-off. Instead, the query seems to energise him into singing Scientology's praises. "It's reinforced certain things that were really constructive and good," he says. "Things that were truly important to me in terms of my family, friends, being creatively awake and pushing forward with music. It helps look at these things and strengthens things that are the most important aspects of my life."
That all sounds positive and perfectly harmless, of course. But surely Beck would possess these same creative gifts without Scientology?
"Absolutely, but it definitely reinforces that," he nods.

Hey, I like Beck! I bet you do, too! Does it matter that he's a Scientologist? Not to me! Johnny Cash was a Christian, loved gospel music- but that won't get me to go to church!

This is great! The top 20 record industry screw ups of all time! For example:
#19 The industry kills the single—and begins its own slow demise In the early ’80s, the music industry began to phase out vinyl singles in favor of cassettes and later, CDs. Then, since it costs the same to manufacture a CD single as a full album, they ditched the format almost altogether. But they forgot that singles were how fans got into the music-buying habit before they had enough money to spend on albums. The end result? Kids who expect music for free. “Greed to force consumers to buy an album [resulted] in the loss of an entire generation of record consumers,” says Billboard charts expert Joel Whitburn. “People who could only afford to buy their favorite hit of the week were told it wasn’t available as a single. Instead, they stopped going to record shops and turned their attention to illegally downloading songs.” Unintended consequence The Eagles still top the album charts.
Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick stood before hundreds of people last summer and triumphantly proclaimed: "Die, N-word, and we don't want to see you 'round here no more." But although Kilpatrick and other black leaders symbolically buried the racial slur in a mock funeral last July, he uttered it in his State of the City address Tuesday, which was carried live on local television and radio stations. This is a story about an innocent man who has been in prison for 26 years while two attorneys who knew he was innocent stayed silent. They did so because they felt they had no choice.
Alton Logan was convicted of killing a security guard at a McDonald's in Chicago in 1982. Police arrested him after a tip and got three eyewitnesses to identify him. Logan, his mother and brother all testified he was at home asleep when the murder occurred. But a jury found him guilty of first degree murder.
Now new evidence reveals that Logan did not commit that murder. But as correspondent Bob Simon reports, the evidence was not new to those two attorneys, who knew it all along but say they couldn't speak out until now. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/03/06/60minutes/main3914719.shtml
Regarded as his finest post-Capitol album, September Of My Years was a look back at his youth that is contemplative, reflective, nostalgic and with a touch of regret. Sinatra's voice had matured into a deeper, richer and warmer baritone. Sinatra sang about middle age, the effect on appearance, the golden memories of time passed. About wives, lovers and friends. He also was not ignorant that rock 'n' roll was waiting to bloom.

Inside September is a 2CD set collecting alternate takes and the session recordings of the songs. Sinatra fans have long wanted to hear the various sessions of this legendary singer but to date despite various reissues and box sets, almost all the sessions, outtakes and alternates remain unissued.
As you can hear from these sessions for September Of My Years, there is much to enjoy from listening to Sinatra attempt the songs. His comments about tempo and the occasional flub when he sings the wrong words are humorous. Always, Sinatra's voice is in impeccable form. this will only be up a short time so download fast! The two songs that download for different countries take the longest to download by the way. Folks, it doesn't get any rarer than this.

Harryhausen, 87, hasn't made a movie since "Clash of the Titans" in 1981. Most of his films are filled with stars you've never heard of, and at the time they didn't win awards. But in the Bay Area, the unofficial capital of the special effects industry, Harryhausen is still the most recognizable name in the business. He's treated like a rock star when he flies into town - during his most recent appearance, last Wednesday at the Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael, Harryhausen received his first standing ovation of the evening before he even reached the stage.
Ukrainian communities around the world are campaigning for global recognition of a horror that killed an estimated seven to 10 million Ukrainians during the Holodomor, the devastating famine that swept the nation during 1931-1932 as a direct result of Stalin's collectivisation and the Soviet Union's determination to wipe out Ukrainian nationalism.
The collapse of the Soviet Union resulted in the release of previously top secret archives on the great horror. On the 75th anniversary of the famine, Ukrainians want the world to know what happened.

Richards warns Amy Winehouse: quit drugs or end up as wrinkly and wasted as me |
In an astonishing case of "do as I say, not as I did" Keith Richards and Sir Mick Jagger, have warned younger pop stars not to take drugs because they are bad for them. The pair, both 64, singled out the troubled singer Amy Winehouse, telling her she should "get her act together".
Speaking in Berlin at the premiere of "Shine a Light", Martin Scorcese's documentary about them, Sir Mick said: "When we were experimenting with drugs, little was known about the effects. In our time, there were no rehab centres. Anyway, I did not know about them."
Jagger, 64, achieved international notoriety when he was briefly jailed in 1967 for possessing drugs, but he is better known now for his devotion to fitness. He prepares for tours by running eight miles a day, swimming and kick-boxing.
Keith Richards, the band's guitarist and a former heroin addict, warned if Amy Winehouse, the 24-year-old singer famous for songs such as Rehab and Addicted, does not give up drugs she could end up looking as wrinkly and wasted as him. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2008/02/17/wstones117.xml

The Ayn Rand Lexicon is now online, a mini encyclopedia of Objectivism. For example, her thoughts on abortion:
An embryo has no rights. Rights do not pertain to a potential, only to an actual being. A child cannot acquire any rights until it is born. The living take precedence over the not-yet-living (or the unborn).
Abortion is a moral right—which should be left to the sole discretion of the woman involved; morally, nothing other than her wish in the matter is to be considered. Who can conceivably have the right to dictate to her what disposition she is to make of the functions of her own body? http://www.aynrandlexicon.com/

I was deeply offended by the ending to I AM LEGEND that glorified suicide bombers. Knowing this film would play the Middle East, I consider it reckless in the extreme to portray suicide bombers as heroes. Guess what? There was an alternative ending. Not only was the unused ending better than the John Wayne style heroics at the end of the film, but it's closer to the feeling of the book. What's next Hollywood? Making heroes of plane hijackers? Watch the alternative ending here- BEFORE IT GETS TAKEN DOWN!
Sadly, that no one involved in the process of making this film had a problem with portraying a suicide bomber as a hero shows how out of touch we all are with terrorism.

FLY, envious Time, till thou run out thy race; Call on the lazy leaden-stepping hours, Whose speed is but the heavy plummet's pace; And glut thyself with what thy womb devours, Which is no more then what is false and vain, And merely mortal dross; So little is our loss, So little is thy gain. Just days before they were to be inducted into the rock and roll Hall Of Fame, lead singer Mike Smith passed away. The only band to give the Beatles a run for their money, the first UK band to have a song banned from public play (BITS AND PIECES), the 5 put out a series of 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 minute songs (long before the Ramones) with high energy and great hooks. If you don't have a Dave Clark 5 cd in your collection, what's your problem?
SPECIAL THEME SURF: THE DAVE CLARK 5!
The Dave Clark Five was a phenomenally successful beat group in the Sixties, but many may have wondered why it wasn't called the Mike Smith Five. Smith was the group's lead singer, keyboard player and chief songwriter, but it was the drummer Clark's group: he chose the personnel and made the business decisions.
"We were the first group where the drummer was the front man," Clark said. "It was always the singer that was the front man but Mike stood there and played piano and keyboards. He had a great voice and he was the Sixties' Rod Stewart, and he contributed a tremendous amount to the Dave Clark Five." "I didn't care about the name," Smith once told me. "I was doing something that I enjoyed doing and it was something that was dead easy. My ego's never been that big, and maybe I lost out because of it. I've got no regrets and no recriminations: I had a great time."

NINE INCH NAILS NEW CD FREE ONLINE, ALLEN GINSBERG'S HOWL AUDIOTAPE DISCOVERED, THE GAZA BOMBSHELL, GLOBAL WARMING GURU SHOCKER, BENNY HINN!
"I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn," wrote Allen Ginsberg more then 50 years ago in what was to become the epic poem of the Beat generation. Now what is believed to be the first ever recording of the late poet reading Howl has been discovered in Oregon. It had always been thought that Ginsberg first recorded Howl in Berkeley, California, in March 1956. But, according to the Oregonian newspaper, the historic first recording took place a month earlier in student lodgings at a private college in Portland. Ginsberg had just hitchhiked to the city with fellow Beat poet Gary Snyder in the winter of 1956. Snyder, who had grown up in Portland and graduated from Reed College, brought his friend to the campus for a couple of readings. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/feb/14/usa Here are the recordings: http://www.reed.edu/news_center/multimedia/index.html

The television evangelist Benny Hinn has an audience of millions - and makes millions. David Millikan joined the throng on stage intent on asking the American preacher a tough question.
157 software tools. No fees. No expiration dates. No problems. Sometimes even no downloads. No kidding. If you bought popular apps instead of trying their gratis counter-parts, at the manufacturers' list prices you'd be out $5,183 and change! Why spend money when you can get what you need for nothing? Sometimes, you do get what you don't pay for. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2260070,00.asp
In an interview by Decca Aitkenhead of The Guardian, Lovelock explains why global warming had passes a tipping point, catastrophe is inevitable, and we are all doomed:
"It's just too late for it," he says. "Perhaps if we'd gone along routes like that in 1967, it might have helped. But we don't have time. All these standard green things, like sustainable development, I think these are just words that mean nothing. I get an awful lot of people coming to me saying you can't say that, because it gives us nothing to do. I say on the contrary, it gives us an immense amount to do. Just not the kinds of things you want to do."
He dismisses eco ideas briskly, one by one. "Carbon offsetting? I wouldn't dream of it. It's just a joke. To pay money to plant trees, to think you're offsetting the carbon? You're probably making matters worse. You're far better off giving to the charity Cool Earth, which gives the money to the native peoples to not take down their forests." […]
He saves his thunder for what he considers the emptiest false promise of all - renewable energy.
"You're never going to get enough energy from wind to run a society such as ours," he says. "Windmills! Oh no. No way of doing it. You can cover the whole country with the blasted things, millions of them. Waste of time."

Thomas J. Stowers gravestone located in the Odd Fellow Cemetery near Baxter, Tennessee, bears engraved information that would indicate history is mistaken about there being no survivors of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. From Richard Crowe. http://www.josephinesjournal.com/stowers.htm
It's dinnertime and you've had a long stressful day at work. The kids are hungry asking you when the food is going to be done. You have a pounding headache and haven't even thought of what you're going to make yet. Grab a couple packages of beef ramen noodles and boil them up in one pan. In another get yourself a frozen vegetable medley and cook then as well. Mix them all together and presto! Quick and easy beef flavored vegetable stir-fry. http://www.daytipper.com/Tip/32034/Use_ramen_noodles_to_make_beef_stir-fry.aspx

THE WINE EXPERT HOAX, IRISH MYSTERIES, TIBET IN PICTURES, NABOKOV'S MOST CONTROVERSIAL BOOK ( IT ISN'T LOLITA), SUCCESSFUL TRANSSEXUALS!
Vote for your favorite horror and science fiction milestones of 2007, plus for Svengoolie as horror film host!
Hot Rod Truckin' Girl sends us this shocker of a story about a student, a host family and starvation.
This short series reflects my reaction to a standard photographic representation of Tibet as something static and objectively distant. By focussing on Lhasa I mean to emphasise the contemporary urban nature of a city that is too-often associated with a mysterious past.http://www.asianart.com/exhibitions/lhasanights/index.html
Admit it guys- wouldn't you fall for this? Can you tell it's a guy?
Transexuals don't have it easy. Many commit suicide after their operations. But there are amazing success stories too!
In Europe former Kings and leaders are easily called insane, corrupt- perhaps because the United States is so young by comparison we don't like to do this. Nixon is praised for "opening up China", Hoover is cleared of starting the depression (he was cleared by Truman of all people), LBJ is cleared for Viet Nam with praise for his use of government to end poverty. Even though that plan didn't work. Even Hillary Clinton says George Bush should be praised for his carrying the nation through 911. Bill Clinton says Ronald Reagan is his hero and wrote a long article in VANITY FAIR praising him. Americans do not feel comfortable saying it ever had a bad leader. It is almost as if by saying it, the nation could collapse. This is as childish as wanting the world to love us. The following presents new views on Lincoln, and the last link is an eye opener- the libertarian view of the South's cause!
This is the most incredible collection of posters and lobby cards from cool cult movies I have ever seen.
BEST SITE OF THE DAY:
In spring 2000, Intuit took possession of the contents of artist Henry Darger's living and working space, which was located at 851 Webster Street in Chicago. Intuit's Henry Darger Room Collection includes tracings, clippings from newspapers, magazines, comic books, cartoons, children's books, coloring books, personal documents, and architectural elements, fixtures, and furnishings from Darger's original room.
Darger lived in a one-room apartment in Chicago's Lincoln Park until 1973 when he retired to a nursing facility. In his small room—which doubled as his studio and home for close to 40 years—he worked on a large number of painted and collaged drawings that illustrated the story of the Vivian Girls, created volumes of writings, and collected hundreds of objects (shoes, eyeglasses, balls of string, etc.). The contrast between the intimate scale of the room and the staggering volume of drawings, illustrations, writings, and collections, conveys vital information about Darger's existence and the work he created.
The goal of the exhibit is to create an environment that provides a window onto Darger's world.

Square Pegs had guests like DEVO, and was way better than it had to be. It actually had better ratings than SAVED BY THE BELL, but was pulled by the network for rampant on set drug use. Sarah Jessica Parker as a teen, too!

PETER GUNN was so cool because it was the only TV show to feature top jazz and jazz musicians- sometimes non-stop jazz music through the entire show! Great stories, loads of action, and one of the best TV theme songs ever made. This one is a must.
1:00am Peter Gunn
Before Ross Martin did THE WILD WILD WEST, which he was superb in, he was the sidekick on the very cool MR. LUCKY show. Violence, gambling, adult stories and cool music brought the wrath of the censors and the show was tamed right off the air. But what a show while it lasted.
