On the very day that Ireland was asserting its right to govern itself in the Mansion House, Dublin, 80 years ago, an IRA attack, though unconnected, was to have as profound an effect on the course of Irish history.

Ever wondered what a UAW contract looks like? Here is all 22 pounds of it (in this case, Ford's 2,215 page 2007 master contract; Coke can is for scale and because I was thirsty).

I'll tell you this much, those 2,215 pages don't include much regarding efficiency and competitiveness. What you'll find are hundreds of rules, regulations, and letters of understanding that have hamstrung the auto companies for years.

If you'd like to read the contracts for yourself, here they are:

A Bettie Page shrine

Bettie Page, the brunet pinup queen with a shoulder-length pageboy hairdo and kitschy bangs whose saucy photos helped usher in the sexual revolution of the 1960s, has died. She was 85.

Page, whose later life was marked by depression, violent mood swings and several years in a state mental institution, died Thursday night at Kindred Hospital in Los Angeles, where she had been on life support since suffering a heart attack Dec. 2, according to her agent, Mark Roesler.

Amy Sherman prefers Pink Floyd over Led Zeppelin. She likes cats, and her fav actor is Daniel Day Lewis. Especially in THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS, in which he runs around scantily clad.

She didn't get into acting until college and she realized she didn't want to  grow up and have responsibility. Acting gave her a chance to play pretend and avoid public scorn.

Surf W/ Best Links Of 2008!

Years ago I would email to pals odd and strange links I found on the net in emails until someone pointed out I could post them on a blog. So was born ALL NIGHT SURFING. Here is the best of the past year, Dec of 2007 to Nov of 2008. If you are new here, sign up for updates on the left by entering your email into the REGISTER box.

The best of the year 2008

The best music video:
In Brazil in the shanty towns built of cardboard and wooden planks, where there aren't so much streets as corridors and at night the police never come, the drug dealers will hold outdoor dance shows. The patrons, if they don't like the baille funk they hear take out their guns and fire in the air. The song PAPER PLANES by MIA is about as close to that scene as I want to get.

THE BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR:
Without question: THE DARK KNIGHT

Where the hell is Matt? This guy is why I have ALL NIGHT SURFING. He spent 14 months going to over 40 countrys to film himself dancing. Wow. Oddly compelling and moving.

The best sculptures of the year

The greatest hero now living is......

Capitalism may deliver wealth and happiness but it does not inspire us. Socialism continues to inspire, despite having never delivered on any of its promises. Why does one inspire, and one not? How do we choose our heroes? Consider:

Which of the following people would you say is the most admirable: Mother Teresa, Bill Gates or Norman Borlaug? And which do you think is the least admirable? For most people, it's an easy question. Mother Teresa, famous for ministering to the poor in Calcutta, has been beatified by the Vatican, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and ranked in an American poll as the most admired person of the 20th century. Bill Gates, infamous for giving us the Microsoft dancing paper clip and the blue screen of death, has been decapitated in effigy in "I Hate Gates" Web sites and hit with a pie in the face. As for Norman Borlaug . . . who the heck is Norman Borlaug?

Norman Borlaug has saved 1 billion lives according to the UN. Oprah Winfrey opened a school for several hundred kids. Guess who is more well known, has been the subject of thousands of articles, has had documentaries and specials done on their life? There isn't even a documentary on Borlaug!

Yet a deeper look might lead you to rethink your answers. Borlaug, father of the "Green Revolution" that used agricultural science to reduce world hunger, has been credited with saving a billion lives, more than anyone else in history. Gates, in deciding what to do with his fortune, crunched the numbers and determined that he could alleviate the most misery by fighting everyday scourges in the developing world like malaria, diarrhea and parasites. Mother Teresa, for her part, extolled the virtue of suffering and ran her well-financed missions accordingly: their sick patrons were offered plenty of prayer but harsh conditions, few analgesics and dangerously primitive medical care.

This is great! The top 20 record industry screw ups of all time! For example:
#19 The industry kills the single—and begins its own slow demise
In the early ’80s, the music industry began to phase out vinyl singles in favor of cassettes and later, CDs. Then, since it costs the same to manufacture a CD single as a full album, they ditched the format almost altogether. But they forgot that singles were how fans got into the music-buying habit before they had enough money to spend on albums. The end result? Kids who expect music for free. “Greed to force consumers to buy an album [resulted] in the loss of an entire generation of record consumers,” says Billboard charts expert Joel Whitburn. “People who could only afford to buy their favorite hit of the week were told it wasn’t available as a single. Instead, they stopped going to record shops and turned their attention to illegally downloading songs.”
Unintended consequence The Eagles still top the album charts.

The Ayn Rand Lexicon is now online, a mini encyclopedia of Objectivism. For example, her thoughts on abortion:

An embryo has no rights. Rights do not pertain to a potential, only to an actual being. A child cannot acquire any rights until it is born. The living take precedence over the not-yet-living (or the unborn).

Abortion is a moral right—which should be left to the sole discretion of the woman involved; morally, nothing other than her wish in the matter is to be considered. Who can conceivably have the right to dictate to her what disposition she is to make of the functions of her own body?

At the beginning of the eighteenth century the Comanches were a small tribe of hunter-gatherers in New Mexico. Once they acquired the use of horses, in three generations they evolved into the 'Spartans of the plains' and provided the fiercest of all Native American resistance to the Anglo-Hispanic conquest of the American West. For a hundred years from 1750, the Comanches dominated New Mexico, Texas and even parts of Louisiana and northern Mexico. As Amerindians, the Comanches were even more impressive than the Aztecs or the Iroquois, for until the American Civil War they largely forced Europeans to bend the knee, and did so moreover when the European imperialist impulse was at its height. Although the word 'empire' may be author's hyperbole, the Comanches ruled an extensive domain that worked on a melange of kinship ties, trade, diplomacy, extortion and violence

So why were the Comanches so exceptional among American Indians?

THE USS LIBERTY incident. The true story. Unmarked Israeli planes attacked a U.S. spy ship during the 6 day war against Egypt, even firing on boats of wounded sailors. The true facts are still classified in the U.S., but they have been released in the UK. After the attack on the boat, U.S. jets with nuclear bombs were on their way to Cairo to drop them in retaliation. (President LBJ had created a fake incident to start the Viet Nam war, so he has a record of doing this). One of the most shocking, devastating documentaries you will ever see. If you can watch this without a tear in your eye you are a stronger person than me. Send this one around, if you can't watch it on your computer find one you can.  I am always fascinated by conspiracy groups who prefer speculative conspiracies over PROVEN ones. The film is
BATTLE ROYALE!

Perhaps one of the most controversial films to come out of Japan in recent years, "Battle Royale" (based on the best-selling Koshun Takami novel) is "Lord of the Flies" meets "Survivor" with guns: in a dystopian Japan of the near future, the government places one class of grade nine students on a remote island, gives them each a weapon, and lets them loose in a fight to the death. Despite being branded the rarely-used R15 rating (restricting the film to those aged 15 and over) when it opened at the tail end of 2000, "Battle Royale" quickly became both a critical and box office success, both domestically and in other Asian film markets. And though the film will probably be remembered more for its graphic exploitation of teen violence, "Battle Royale" also makes some rather pointed remarks about Japanese society and history.

The Psychotronic Film Society was founded 25 years ago by Del Close, Supervixen Pam Boom Boom Smith and Michael Flores. Del died, Pam got married, Flores remains. "YOU CAN'T KILL A MAN BORN TO HANG"!

BEST SITE OF THE DAY:

It has remained one of World War II's most enduring mysteries, one that resonated decades later after Sept. 11: Who in Washington knew what and when before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941?

Specifically, who heard or saw a transcript of a Tokyo shortwave radio news broadcast that was interrupted by a prearranged coded weather report? The weather bulletin signaled Japanese diplomats around the world to destroy confidential documents and codes because war with the United States, the Soviet Union or Britain was beginning.

Did anyone try to warn people about Pearl Harbor?

Surf W/ RIP Forest Ackerman

A sad, special theme this time. The man who turned so many onto science fiction and horror, has died.

Forrest J Ackerman, the sometime actor, literary agent, magazine editor and full-time bon vivant who discovered author Ray Bradbury and was widely credited with coining the term "sci-fi," has died. He was 92.

Here is his interview in BIZARRE MAGAZINE

Here's the man who defined science fiction, and influenced many filmmakers from Lucas to Spielberg.

steve dahl jack fm chicago

Steve Dahl, a Chicago radio fixture for more than 30 years, told his Jack Fm listeners that today would be his last broadcast.

"This is our last show here," Dahl said this morning on his WJMK-FM 104.3 radio show.

"They were saying, 'Well, do a couple of weeks, a farewell.'" Dahl said. "I said, 'It's not a farewell. You guys are taking me off the air. I'm not retiring.' … "I still have 2 1/2 years left on my deal so, quite frankly, I'm not letting them out of it."

Dahl, famous for his song parodies and impressions, is considered a pioneer in talk radio and has been influential for many other radio personalities.

He took an "every guy" approach to life in Chicago and often told stories about his life and family.

The radio industry is feeling the crunch of the economic crisis, and advertisers and digital have increasngly splintered the audience.

Dahl writes a column for the Chicago Tribune, and said he can continue to "write for the paper, do some TV things and who knows what else" but says he will stay off the radio for the remainder of his contract.

Perhaps coming to terms with the fact that increasingly few people give a sh*t about the Grammys, the Recording Academy tonight announced its list of nominees for the 51st Annual Grammy Awards, and those nominees were...shockingly relevant.

On June 2, 2006, the Hampton Grease Band reunited for the first time in 33 years to perform their legendary 1971 double album, "Music to Eat." The group included all the original surviving members who played on the record (Bruce Hampton, Glenn Phillips, Jerry Fields and Mike Holbrook), along with Bob Elsey (of the Swimming Pool Q's) filling in for the late Harold Kelling. The show took place at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta before a packed house and was professionally filmed by director Barry Mills and a 5-camera crew. After 2 1/2 years of editing, Barry has just released the 1 hour and 23 minute DVD, and it's available for order here.  http://www.angelfire.com/ga2/glennphillips/orders.html

THE MOST DANGEROUS PLACES ON EARTH, THE MOST DANGEROUS TOYS, IGGY FINALLY GETS RESPECT, HAPPY BIRTHDAY MICKEY MOUSE, WTF!?! BLACK CONFEDERATES, TOP 10 RETAIL RIPOFFS!

We've all heard Obama's contributors base is made up of the little guys. Turns out, it isn't true. Oh well......  http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/11/obama-money.html

Iggy Pop is finally getting the respect he deserves... though this interview is not ok for work!

This incessant fixation on Hitler's sexuality, on his alleged perversity. I think it's fair to say that the very apex of cultural stupidity in our era is the compulsive conjunction of Hitler and sex. He was a "predatory" homosexual. He engaged in excretory practices with his underage half-niece. And, one of the most enduring, a myth I thought I had refuted once and for all but that now rears its head again: Hitler had only one testicle.

The top 20 most dangerous places on earth!

Here is what Svengoolie is showing:
12/6- Stooges: "Big Shot Stooges" (Stooges with guns)
                    Sven: "Brides of Dracula"
12/13- Stooges: "Hysterical History" (Stooges in various eras)
Sven: "I Saw  What You Did"
12/20- Stooges: 'Sleigh Bell Stooges" (duh!)
Sven: WCIU- "Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde"
1 am Me-TV-"Santa Claus Conquers the Martians"
12/27- Stooges: "Alcohol and Stooges Don't Mix"
