SPECIAL THEME SURF: SPIES AND ESPIONAGE PART 2
Lot's of hits the last 24 hours on the SPIES AND ESPIONAGE theme part 1. Thanks to Sodahead, Facebook and people sending out the link in emails! There will be a third part, probably next week. You can sign up for updates by entering your email in the REGISTER box to the left of the posts. Today we discover the science fiction author who saved lives in WW 2, the true story of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the pagan magician who led a double life, how Rommel the Desert Fox was able to beat his foes in North Africa (it wasn't in the movie PATTON!) and more. Including declassified films and the story of Hitler's plan to use suicide bombers to attack New York City!
Cordwainer Smith was one of the most creative early science fiction writers whose work is still read and collected by fans. But what his fans didn't know, was that Smith was actually in Intel and had a profound effect on Intel. In World War 2 he had seen films of Japanese being taken prisoner and realized they were being executed. This of course meant not only were we not getting Intel but the Japanese knew if they tried to surrender they would be shot. Dr. Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger, his real name, went to FDR and appealed to him to encourage the troops to take Japanese prisoners. The next day FDR's Secretary of War at the White House held a press conference and showed a U.S. soldiers' skull that had been fashioned into a ashtray and taken off a dead Japanese soldier.

Realizing that FDR was not going to help, he hatched a plan. He sent to officers at Iwo Jima instructions to be read to the troops one morning on the proper handling of prisoners. It worked. Not only were we able to get intel, but once the Japanese realized they would not be shot, they began surrendering in droves.
There have been many biographies written about the Great Beast 666, Aleister Edward Crowley, the bisexual magician and mystic, champion chess player, mountaineer, writer and poet. Some of them have hinted at his possible involvement in the murky world of espionage and intelligence.
However, this is the first full-length study of the other secret life as a spy of one of the most extraordinary men of the 20th century. he also helpeds to sink the Lusitania and ready America to enter the first World War.
There have been no more successful, more dramatically impressive spies than a group of Englishmen who all met at Trinity College, Cambridge University in the 1930s. To one degree or another, they were active for the Soviet Union for over thirty years. They were the most efficient espionage agents against American and British interests of any collection of spies in the Twentieth Century. One of them, Kim Philby, served the KGB for almost fifty years.
All four were eventually exposed but --- amazingly --- never caught. One, Burgess, was a flamboyant, alcoholic homosexual. The second, Blunt, was a discrete homosexual who rose to knighthood as the Royal Curator of Art. The third, Maclean, was a tense, insecure diplomat of ambiguous sexual persuasion. The fourth, Philby --- and perhaps the most intriguing of the group --- was a dedicated heterosexual who has been called, not inaccurately, the "Spy of the Century."
Graphic Images. Captured enemy footage shows the Vietcong in action. Attacks on US Servicemen, using US Military equipment, building booby traps, etc. This film was shown to many US servicemen before they went into the fray in Vietnam. http://www.realmilitaryflix.com/public/431.cfm
Sent through a supposedly secure channel devoted to peace negotiations (a transatlantic cable belonging to Scandinavia) on January 19th 1917, the 'Zimmermann Telegram' – often called the Zimmermann Note - was a memo sent from the German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to the German Ambassador to Mexico. It informed the ambassador that Germany would be resuming its policy of Unrestricted Submarine Warfare (USW) and, crucially, ordered him to propose an alliance. If Mexico would join in a war against the US, they would be rewarded with financial support and re-conquered land in New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona. The ambassador was also to ask the Mexican President to propose his own alliance to Japan, a member of the Allies. This would cause many Americans to drop the pacifism they had after the Civil War.

There was no German officer as respected during or after the war as Rommel, known as the Desert Fox. He had argued for tanks at Normandy, but Hitler didn't believe there would be an attack there. He punished any German soldier in his command who mistreated POW's. He even plotted killing Hitler and was caught and ordered to kill himself or his entire family would be wiped out. But his greatest success was in the North Africa campaigns as seen in the film PATTON. What filmmakers and the public don't know, is that Rommel had broken the code and always knew where they were going to be. Once the code was changed, he began losing.
Part 1, J. Edgar Hoover describes espionage activities and security measures taken against them. Shows Bundist camps in the U.S. German rallies in South America are shown and acts of sabotage are dramatized. Part 2 reenacts the Fritz Duquesne spy case. Dramatizes the presence of German submarines off the Atlantic coast. Shows the saboteurs being brought to trial.
No story in 20th Century has achieved the mythos of the Cuban Missile Crisis. JFK standing up to the Russians would excite the nation, and from then on Presidents did not want to be seen as backing down. If JFK could stand up to atomic bombs, how could LBJ or Nixon back out of Nam? Or Bush or Obama turn away from Afghanistan? There's a problem, however. The facts do not match up to the myth, not one bit. Here's is part 1 on the Cuban missile crisis: http://thepond.blogdrive.com/archive/47.html
and here is part 2:
The myth has cost us many lives......
Adolf Hitler had plans to send suicide bombers to attack New York City! Here is part 1 of this amazing story:
Here is part 2:

Surf W/ Real Spies Part 1
The world of spies and espionage is the theme today and for the coming part 2. At its best, spying allows countries to avoid wars. At its worse, it is a lonely life with little room for friends and often long lasting negative defamation's of one's character. Today we'll look at previously classified films, and characters and events that emerge from the shadows.
THE WORLD OF SPIES AND ESPIONAGE PART 1
In October 1917 – a year in which hundreds of thousands of men died pointlessly in the cause of one flag or another – a woman was shot by a military firing squad in the forest of Vincennes, east of Paris. She was a dancer, not a soldier. She came from a country that was not engaged in the Great War (a war that would not, as promised, end all wars).
It seems she was a prototype of 20th-century liberated woman – a Mae West or Marilyn Monroe – who seized independence and notoriety through manipulating and pleasing men.
Mata Hari was executed for her sexuality
She had a particular weakness for men in uniform. She once said that she would rather "sleep with a poor officer than a rich banker". It was this weakness – and her curious mixture of worldliness and naivety – which proved her undoing. Mata Hari was innocent when she faced her executioners. In fact, she was a patriot for the French. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/was-mata-hari-framed-631855.html
What was World War 1 like? This fascinating silent film THE ACTUALITIES OF WAR was made to show civilians what soldiers had gone through. The scenes are real, and captures a soldiers experiences like the vast majority of war films do not. http://www.realmilitaryflix.com/public/413.cfm?sd=9
The finest Christmas present, and the most unexpected, our country ever received was handed to us by George Washington in the dismal winter of 1776 when he crossed the Delaware and captured Trenton just as the faltering fires of the American Revolution seemed about to go out.
There were to be other hard winters before independence was won, Valley Forge among them, but none more critical than this one. Seven days later, Christmas night, Washington suddenly forded his troops back across the Delaware, stormed into Trenton with the dawn, and defeated the Hessian army there. The attack was flawlessly executed, timed perfectly. Without an American fatality, the town was taken!
It was America's first major victory of the war.
In one brilliant, totally unexpected stroke, Washington had changed the complexion of the War for Independence from a dying pallor to a ruddy glow. America was jubilant, its confidence magically reborn. England was grave with sudden concern. It is the story of John Honeyman, a plain, closemouthed weaver, "the spy of Washington" at Trenton. In his lifetime, the public never knew how he saved the revolution.

D'Eon a French nobleman whose mother named him Genevieve because she wanted a daughter and dressed the child as girl from the age of four until seven! This obviously had long term effects on the boy as throughout his life he would alternate form dressing as female or male, in fact he was able to pass as a very good woman, he had narrow shoulders, a petite build and was unable to grow a beard!
However spending half his life dressed as a woman did not mean that he was a wimp, in fact he became very good at the male occupation of fencing and studied law. He wrote a thesis on the finances of Louis XIV and it was this that got him noticed by King Louis XV, but when the king discovered that the young nobleman had a fancy to dress as a woman, this gave the king an idea, d'Eon would make the perfect spy and was recruited into the service of the king and France.

Describes the packing of guns, explosives, radio sets and breakable material in "H" and "C" containers and panniers; harness and parachute shops at Holme; loading air drop material into bomb racks of B-24's and briefing of plane crews at Harrington airfield. http://www.realmilitaryflix.com/public/251.cfm

An innocent man, condemned by history and the CIA- until recently
The true story of Joseph McCarthy is now known by Cold War and espionage historians, although the general public has no idea what actually happened. The story of a whistle blower destroyed for trying to expose non-action on spies is more riveting and compelling than the illusions most have of the so-called "McCarthy era".

Office of Strategic Services "Secret School" in London trains 40 Polish German Army soldiers in techniques of infiltration and radio operations. Schumannofsky, Officer of Polish Military Intelligence Service gives speeches. Soldiers take classes in morse code, telegraph operation, electronics, key making, cryptography, current affairs, use of invisible inks, gutter fighting, intelligence gathering, clandestine photography. School commander appraises students' work. Included are scenes of London and vicinity, and shots of morse code chart, telegraph equipment, tools used by agents, orientations of German circuit diagrams and German magazines, newspapers and maps, and soldier/students engaged in classroom tests and simulated intelligence assignments. http://www.realmilitaryflix.com/public/247.cfm?sd=61
Benedict Arnold was different: a military hero for both sides in the same war. He began his career as an American Patriot in May 1775, when he and Ethan Allen led the brigade that captured Fort Ticonderoga on Lake Champlain. Arnold's heroics continued in September, when he led an expedition of 1,150 riflemen against Quebec, the capital of British Canada. Why did Arnold desert the cause for which he had fought so gallantly and twice been wounded? Was there any justification for his conduct? Once again, the facts are wildly different from "what everyone knows".

Richard Sorge warned Stalin that Hitler was going to attack Russia, but Stalin considered Hitler a comradfe and ally, he ignored the warning and Germany attacked. The following link is interesting because it is from a Russian site.

The Soviet Union spy appartus did such a great job that being anti- communist, despite the fact communists backed Hitler before the war and spied on this country, or even opposing Stalin to this day is considered "paranoid". Ask someone from Hungary, Poland, East Germany or the Czech Republic and they are stunned Americans feel this way. This film, RED NIGHTMARE is considered an example of "paranoid politics", yet the film not only accurately portrays life behind the Iron Curtain, but correctly predicted how Communism would fall. Not from nuclear war or sanctions, but by the people rising up against it.

He was 82. Yokoi lived in a tunnel-like, underground cave in a bamboo grove until Jan 24, 1972, when he was discovered near the Talofofo River by hunters. Yokoi, who had been a tailor's apprentice before being drafted in 1941, made clothing from the fibers of wild hibiscus plants and survived on a diet of coconuts, breadfruit, papayas, snails, eels and rats. 140,000 Japanese soldiers went into service with the Communist Red Army, or went on living independently in Communist held areas. Some of these soldiers had been stranded without transportation back to Japan, or were unwilling to return to the American occupied home islands. Others feared disgrace from their families for surrender. Many choose to fight for the Chinese, Russians or the warlords in the region. FOR EXAMPLE:
Late 1948 An estimated 10-20,000 well equipped Japanese troops were trapped in the mountains of Manchuria and did not surrender until late in 1948. They were caught in a no man's land of civil war stuck between the warring Nationalist and Communist forces and were unable to surrender. The American public was never told.

The Superman cartoons of the 1940's remain stunning works of art.
In 1952 Ian Fleming wrote CASINO ROYALE. He also wrote CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG. He created a character that rivalled Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan and Superman in terms of a modern myth. In the books he was cruel, sadistic, violent, sexist and imperialistic. All these aspects were removed over the years to appeal to female audiences. When the films returned to that formula with the CASINO ROYALE film a few years ago a funny thing happened... more women went to see the film than any Bond film in years!
