Wind turbines are the hottest rage in 'going green' but the technology has a dangerous side for endangered salmon in the Columbia River. It kills them.

They criss-cross the nation's women, rendering their victims permanently scarred. They peep out of shirt collars, above the waists of jeans or between the straps of a pair of sandals. They wink at you as someone passes the sugar across a table.

They are a mark of temporary insanity, instantly turning the classiest, chicest woman into trailer trash. Not for nothing are they known as 'tramp stamps'. Ink on women. ( This guy really hates tats on women, I don't agree but he does give good rant! Reminds me of Ed Anger in the Weekly World News, only this guy means it!)

Surf W/ Film Noir Classics!

FILM NOIR: A LOOK AT SOME GREAT FILMS

There are some terrific films over at the Prelinger Archives, and its easy to go full screen by clicking on the box next to the white dot on the right side of the screen. Enjoy some dark, cynical flicks.......which came from the FDR optimism and the second world war. An optimism, that these films show, didn't last. It is also very cool that on the net I can actually show you some great film noir movies.

Film noir:(Definition from James Monaco's Film Glossary) "Originally a French term (literally "black film"), now in common usage, to indicate a film with a gritty, urbn setting that deals mainly with dark or violent passions in a downbeat way.Especially common in American cinema during the late forties and early fifties, its themes of existential alienation and paranoia have often been read as signs of postwar malaise and Cold War anxiety "

The moral world of the protagonist is urban and nightmarish, nighttime imagery used, thematic focus on ambiguously corrupt characters -- untrustworthy characters abound -- and the foundations of the world are unstable.Society has seemingly no redeeming members, no hope for moral and civilized survival.

New breed of woman -- making her own rules.Driven, selfish characters represented.Black widow sensibility -- men coming back from war to women whose position has changed. She's worked, maybe had affairs.Powerful, sexual females thus represented as dangerous. The black widow is smart and powerful.Uses sex to get what she wants.Man is just a tool.Smokers --> low morals.Visually, relations of dominance are emphasized as women are represented from low angles while high angles predominate in depictions of men.Male fantasy of violent woman.Unattainable.Playing with fire.A love story that could never work out.Perversion of love --> more passionate, more deadly. What person is doing is doomed but can't stop doing.

THE STRANGE LOVES OF MARTHA IVERS:

"Man is waylaid by chance in old home town, meets a girl down on her luck and a turbulent couple with whom he shares a dark childhood secret. Significant noir melodrama focusing on provocative, intermingling relationships of neurotic love, guilt and fear." - noir expert Spencer Selby Cast: Barbara Stanwyck, Van Heflin, Lizabeth Scott, Kirk Douglas (his first film),

PANIC IN THE STREETS:

One night in the New Orleans slums, vicious hoodlum Blackie (Jack Palance) and his friends kill an illegal immigrant who won too much in a card game. Next morning, Dr. Clint Reed (Richard Widmark) of the Public Health Service confirms the dead man had pneumonic plague

DOOR TO DOOR MANIAC also known as 5 MINUTES TO KILL:

A gang of bank robbers (Johnny Cash) terrorize a small town by knocking on doors and then killing whoever answers. With some great rockabilly on the guitar!
A noir film from 1961
  http://www.archive.org/details/five_minutes_to_live

FEAR IN THE NIGHT:

DeForest Kelley in a Cornell Woolrich story.

The direction is tight and the action never lags over 72 minutes, with inventive camera work by Greenhalgh that creates exactly the dark signature mood of the Woolrich story. The nightmare scenes are powerful and the use of voice-over narration flashback adds to the mystery.  The performance of noir regular Paul Kelly as a cop with a conflict of interest is on target, and the troubled protagonist is well-played by De Forest Kelley, with good support from Ann Doran as his sister, and Kay Scott as his girl-friend.

I found the performance of bit-player Scott in her first role as Betty Winter, particularly engaging: her portrayal is so unaffected that the whole bizarre story seems real and grounded in the familiar. Her incomprehension at her boyfriend's paranoia and strange behavior, and the dark mood established by the deft camera work and direction, establish exactly the nightmare Woolrich world of existential dread.  http://filmsnoir.net/2008/07  Here is the link to the movie:  http://www.archive.org/details/FearInTheNight

SCARLET STREET :

German director Fritz Lang is best known for the highly influential films from relatively early in his career, especially Metropolis (1927) and M (1931). But he also had a brief Hollywood heyday during the mid 1940s, when he made some of his best films. Scarlet Street has been claimed by film noir. This attribution is understandable. The lighting is dark, with heavy use of shadows. The characters are all shady as well.  http://www.archive.org/details/ScarletStreet

THE MAN WHO CHEATED HIMSELF:

Tough cop helps his lover cover up the shooting of her wealthy husband. Mainstream noir, primarily distinguished by its acting and San Francisco visuals." - noir expert Spencer Selby

Cast: Lee J. Cobb, John Dall, Jane Wyatt, Lisa Howard

http://www.archive.org/details/Man_Who_Cheated_Himself

HE WALKED BY NIGHT:

Gripping film noir crime drama about a manhunt for a ruthless killer who plays a deadly cat and mouse game with the police. Starring Richard Basehart, Scott Brady, Whit Bissell, and Jack Webb, this movie was the basis for "Dragnet". Watch for Whit Bissell, the unsung but solid bit player who has appeared in hundreds of films and TV shows
http://www.archive.org/details/He_Walked_By_Night.avi

QUICKSAND:

Film noir with Mickey Rooney, Peter Lorre, and Jeanne Cagney. Rooney steals $20 and sinks into robbery and blackmail.  http://www.archive.org/details/Quicksand_clear

THE HITCH-HIKER:

This film has been re-made several times, including a good one with Rutger Hauer. You may end up like this one best! Edmond O'Brien and Frank Lovejoy pick up a hitch-hiker (William Talman) who turns out to be an insane escaped convict.  http://www.archive.org/details/Hitch_Hiker

THE SECOND WOMAN:

Robert Young plays Jeff Cohalan, a young man whose wife was murdered while they were on their honeymoon, and who is plagued by strange accidents and visions of her death. He meets a beautiful young woman on a train, Ellen (Betsy Drake), and it becomes apparent that the two are very attracted to one another. Ellen soon learns about Jeff's past and is quickly drawn into his strange dark world, even when she begins to realize that Jeff may be much more dangerous than he seems.
http://www.archive.org/details/The_Second_Woman_

DETOUR:

"Man is involved in two freakish accidents that make him look like a murderer. Poverty row masterwork that is the most precise elucidation of the noir theme of explicit fatalism." - noir expert Spencer Selby

http://www.archive.org/details/Detour

STAGE FRIGHT:

Alfred Hitchcock captured the film noir genre, years before it went mainstream! Eve Gill (Jane Wyman), an aspiring young actress, shelters a fellow acting student, Jonathan Cooper (Richard Todd), from the police. He is suspected of murdering the husband of his mistress, Charlotte Inwood (Marlene Dietrich), a famous singer.   http://www.archive.org/details/Hitchcock_Stage_Fright

SHOCK!:

This post-World War II suspense thriller sets off an emotional roller coaster after the psychologically fragile wife of a POW (Anabel Shaw) witnesses a brutal murder from a hotel window while waiting to be reunited with her husband (Frank Latimer).
By the time he arrives, she's nearly comatose with shock.
The hotel's psychiatrist (Vincent Price) is called in to help

Film noir classic, noted for its dark themes, stark camera angles and high-contrast lighting. Not to mention a terrific acting job from Vincent Price!

BEAT THE DEVIL:

This movie has not become a cult classic for nothing. Among its other merits, it is one of the few films where a film noir is mixed with a comedy. It's a whose who of actors of it's vintage and is directed by John Huston. It stars Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones, Gina Lollobrigida, Robert Morley and Peter Lorre.  http://www.archive.org/details/Beat_the_Devil_DVD

Surf W/ 1950's Live TV!

SPECIAL THEME SURF: When TV took risks! SINATRA, LOUIS ARMSTRONG, BELA LUGOSI, PAUL NEWMAN, BORIS KARLOFF, JOHNNY CARSON, THE THREE STOOGES, JACK BENNY, VINCENT PRICE, BING CROSBY!

I've done too many requiems here the past few weeks- Rudy Ray Moore, Studs Terkel, Yma Sumac.... let's have some fun from the days when TV was LIVE! Often shot in long takes, 1950's TV was cool....... and truly spontaneous!

ED WYNN had a live show- in 1950. Very few people had TV's when this show aired, and it is one of the earliest appearences of The 3 Stooges I know of on TV!

SUSPENSE wasn't just a beloved radio show- it was a live TV show, too! Here's an episode with Bela Lugosi

Live television, in this case a noir mystery show called MARTIN KANE PRIVATE EYE, is amazing when you realize the scenes are being done in a series of long takes.
TALES OF TOMORROW was another cool 1950's TV show also filmed live. it is also really well done and still holds up.

Hey kids, time for SUPER CIRCUS! With the original ads.

The great character actor BORIS KARLOFF stars in PAST TENSE! LIVE!

The first time TV ever dealt with racism in a drama!

Paul Newman in a science fiction show, also live, that Kurt Vonnegut must have seen!

Johnny Carson as the host of a game show, DO YOU TRUST YOUR WIFE?

From 1955, THE SPACE ADVENTURES OF FLASH GORDON!

Jack Benny on the General Electric show, introduced by Ronald Reagan!

It was filmed live and then edited, but hey, Jack Benny with Vincent Price HAS to be included! With tobacco ads too!

BEST SITE OF THE DAY:
The Edsel was a huge failure for Ford, but it did give us this very rare clip of Sinatra and Bing Crosby singing together. It doesn't get much cooler than this!

Surf W/ Yma Sumac RIP

GOOD BYE YMA SUMAC

Yma Sumac has died

This is a clip of the great Peruvian singer, Yma Sumac from the movie 'Secret of the Incas" starring Charlton Heston (the original Indiana Jones).
http://ronaldroybal.blogspot.com/2008/06/yma-sumac-from-of-incas.html

Here is Yma with Walt Disney. She created the exotic sound that would sweep Tiki bars for over two decades and the 80's Tiki Revival.

Yma Sumac, the Peruvian-born singer whose spectacular multi-octave vocal range and exotic persona made her an international sensation in the 1950s, has died. She was 86.

Sumac, who was diagnosed with colon cancer in February, died Saturday in an assisted-living facility in Silver Lake, said Damon Devine, her personal assistant and close friend.  http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-sumac3-2008nov03,0,7825319.story

Here is Yma's incredible story, with quotes from an interview, and the backround to her albums.

Now known as Yma Sumac, Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chavarri del Castillo was born on September 13, 1922 in Ichocán, CajamarcaPeru. Other dates mentioned in her various biographies range from 1921 to 1929. Some sources claim that she was not born in Ichocán, but in a nearby village or possibly in Lima, and that her family owned a ranch in Ichocán where she spent most of her early life. Stories published in the 1950s claimed that she was an Incan princess directly descended from Atahualpa. A story claiming that she was actually born Amy Camus (Yma Sumac backwards) in Brooklyn or Canada was fabricated while she was performing in New York City in the early 1950s.

Yma Sumac live in 1961

Here is the song of hers I first heard that blew me away.

This is a great collection of her songs

Surf W/ Studs Terkel RIP

GOODBYE STUDS TERKEL

Studs on how he would like to be remembered

Chicago is not the most corrupt American city. It's the most theatrically corrupt.
Studs Terkel

Today, Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich(D-OH) made the following statement after hearing of Studs Terkel’s passing:

“Studs Terkel knew the real America. The America of grit and gumption, heart and soul, passion and nerve. He chronicled five generations of American history with a compassionate and deep understanding of the American character.

“He was the quintessential American writer. He was our Boswell, our Whitman, our Sandburg. He was able to get people to open up and share their innermost thoughts and their deepest dreams. In the words of Kipling ‘he walked with kings and never lost the common touch.’

I always love to quote Albert Einstein because nobody dares contradict him.
Studs Terkel

An interview with Studs by Mother Jones magazine  http://www.motherjones.com/arts/qa/1995/09/eastman.html

I think it's realistic to have hope. One can be a perverse idealist and say the easiest thing: 'I despair. The world's no good.' That's a perverse idealist. It's practical to hope, because the hope is for us to survive as a human species. That's very realistic.
Studs Terkel

Studs website at the Historical Society  http://www.studsterkel.org/

I want people to talk to one another no matter what their difference of opinion might be.
Studs Terkel

The 95-year-old writer and oral historian Studs Terkel has witnessed almost a century of American life. To him the past is still as fresh as the present - which is why he's a great raconteur, says Gary Younge

I've always felt, in all my books, that there's a deep decency in the American people and a native intelligence - providing they have the facts, providing they have the information.
Studs Terkel

Studs on the early days of Chicago broadcasting, including his appearences on KUKLA, FRAN AND OLLIE. Part 1:

Part 2:

Part 3:

Why are we born? We're born eventually to die, of course. But what happens between the time we're born and we die? We're born to live. One is a realist if one hopes.
Studs Terkel

BEST SITE OF THE DAY:

Studs Terkel's accomplishments as America's pre-eminent listener are all the more remarkable when you consider that he happens to be a prodigious talker. He is, in other words, a monument to restraint. A couple of times, I've reversed roles with Studs--I've interviewed him for an hour on stage--and each time I was tempted to ask him one question, take off my lapel-microphone and join the audience. He could easily have held the audience for a one-hour answer that ranged from his thoughts on jazz to his soap-opera career playing gangsters to the dinner-table conversations at the men's hotel his mother ran to his antic experiences with the blacklist to the happy times in his favorite Chicago saloon, Ricardo's, where one of the waiters was cued to stroll over to the table and join him in the Spanish Civil War song "Los Cuatro Generales." Once Studs got on his roll, in fact, he might not have even noticed that I was missing.

GUNS AND ROSES NEW TRACK RELEASED ONLINE: LEGALLY!

New Music: Guns 'N Roses: "Chinese Democracy" [Stream]

Wow, it's happening: Axl Rose really might wind up putting out this thing. Very early this morning, the title track from the once thought never-to-be-completed opus was played on New York's Q104.3, and right now they're streaming it. I have to admit that I haven't followed each twist and turn of every leak, so I can't say for sure how this allegedly final version of the tune stacks up. The important thing is it's there for you to listen to and no one is going to jail for hosting it. Have at it.

Among my saddest moments as a career counselor is when I hear a story like this: "I wasn't a good student in high school, but I wanted to prove that I can get a college diploma. I'd be the first one in my family to do it. But it's been five years and $80,000, and I still have 45 credits to go."

I have a hard time telling such people the killer statistic: Among high-school students who graduated in the bottom 40 percent of their classes, and whose first institutions were four-year colleges, two-thirds had not earned diplomas eight and a half years later.
