I've done too many requiems here the past few weeks- Rudy Ray Moore, Studs Terkel, Yma Sumac.... let's have some fun from the days when TV was LIVE! Often shot in long takes, 1950's TV was cool....... and truly spontaneous!
ED WYNN had a live show- in 1950. Very few people had TV's when this show aired, and it is one of the earliest appearences of The 3 Stooges I know of on TV!
SUSPENSE wasn't just a beloved radio show- it was a live TV show, too! Here's an episode with Bela Lugosi
Live television, in this case a noir mystery show called MARTIN KANE PRIVATE EYE, is amazing when you realize the scenes are being done in a series of long takes.
TALES OF TOMORROW was another cool 1950's TV show also filmed live. it is also really well done and still holds up.

Yma Sumac has died
Here is Yma with Walt Disney. She created the exotic sound that would sweep Tiki bars for over two decades and the 80's Tiki Revival.
Yma Sumac, the Peruvian-born singer whose spectacular multi-octave vocal range and exotic persona made her an international sensation in the 1950s, has died. She was 86.
Sumac, who was diagnosed with colon cancer in February, died Saturday in an assisted-living facility in Silver Lake, said Damon Devine, her personal assistant and close friend. http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-sumac3-2008nov03,0,7825319.story

Now known as Yma Sumac, Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chavarri del Castillo was born on September 13, 1922 in Ichocán, Cajamarca, Peru. Other dates mentioned in her various biographies range from 1921 to 1929. Some sources claim that she was not born in Ichocán, but in a nearby village or possibly in Lima, and that her family owned a ranch in Ichocán where she spent most of her early life. Stories published in the 1950s claimed that she was an Incan princess directly descended from Atahualpa. A story claiming that she was actually born Amy Camus (Yma Sumac backwards) in Brooklyn or Canada was fabricated while she was performing in New York City in the early 1950s.

Studs Terkel's accomplishments as America's pre-eminent listener are all the more remarkable when you consider that he happens to be a prodigious talker. He is, in other words, a monument to restraint. A couple of times, I've reversed roles with Studs--I've interviewed him for an hour on stage--and each time I was tempted to ask him one question, take off my lapel-microphone and join the audience. He could easily have held the audience for a one-hour answer that ranged from his thoughts on jazz to his soap-opera career playing gangsters to the dinner-table conversations at the men's hotel his mother ran to his antic experiences with the blacklist to the happy times in his favorite Chicago saloon, Ricardo's, where one of the waiters was cued to stroll over to the table and join him in the Spanish Civil War song "Los Cuatro Generales." Once Studs got on his roll, in fact, he might not have even noticed that I was missing.

I have to admit that I haven't followed each twist and turn of every leak, so I can't say for sure how this allegedly final version of the tune stacks up. The Woody Allen Special from September 21, 1969 - which was part of TV series called The Kraft Music Hall. (the guest for this episode was the 5th Dimension, featuring the Laura Nyro song Wedding Bell Blues with Marilyn McCoo in top form and Working on a Groovy Thing - AWESOME. Wedding Bell Blues was released in October 1969 shortly after this special and stayed in the Top 40 for 14 weeks). Candace Bergen, best known for her role as Murphy Brown is Woody's special guest. And - oh my - what a treat - Reverend Billy Graham has a terrific interview with Woody Allen as they discuss God, sex and seeing each other's show.

Comedian Rudy Ray Moore, better known as Dolemite, has died in Akron, Ohio. He was 81.
Moore, whose actual name was Rudolph Frank Moore, passed away Sunday from complications of diabetes, his only child and daughter, Yvette "Rusty" Wesson, told us.
According to Wikipedia, Moore is perhaps best known as Dolemite, the uniquely articulate pimp ("… rappin' & tappin' is my game!") from the 1975 film "Dolemite," and its sequel, "The Human Tornado." The persona was developed during his earlier stand-up comedy records.
Rudy Ray Moore was also known as the "king of the party records" and released many comedy records throughout the 1960s and 1970s, developing a style even more rude and explicit than contemporaries like Redd Foxx and Richard Pryor. This kept him off of television and major films, but cultivated an enduring fan base. He also guested on Big Daddy Kane's CD Taste of Chocolate, released in 1990.
The 2 Live Crew used Rudy Ray Moore's records as scratch samples on their early work; most notably on "Throw The Di*k.
"
Moore starred in "Big Money Hustlas," a movie created by and starring the Insane Clown Posse, in which he played Dolemite for the first time in over 20 years.
In 2008 Rudy Ray Moore reprised the character Petey Wheatstraw for the song "I live for the Funk" Featuring Blowfly and Daniel Jordan. This marked the first time Blowfly and Rudy have collaborated on the same record together, and the 30 year anniversary since the movie was filmed.
Moore began his entertainment career as an R&B singer and continued singing through his comedy career. He developed an interest in comedy in the Army after expanding on a singing performance for other servicemen.
Besides his daughter, Moore also leaves behind his 98 year-old mother Lucille.

In late 1945, along the banks of the Techa River in the Soviet Union, a dozen labor camps sent 70,000 inmates to begin construction of a secret city. Mere months earlier the United States' Little Boy and Fat Man bombs had flattened Hiroshima and Nagasaki, leaving Soviet leaders salivating over the massive power of the atom. In a rush to close the gap in weapons technology, the USSR commissioned a sprawling plutonium-production complex in the southern Ural mountains. The clandestine military-industrial community was to be operated by Russia's Mayak Chemical Combine, and it would come to be known as Chelyabinsk-40.
Within a few years the newfangled nuclear reactors were pumping out plutonium to fuel the Soviet Union's first atomic weapons. Chelyabinsk-40 was absent from all official maps, and it would be over forty years before the Soviet government would even acknowledge its existence. Nevertheless, the small city became an insidious influence in the Soviet Union, ultimately creating a corona of nuclear contamination dwarfing the devastation of the Chernobyl disaster
