SurfW/Hello Kitty-Convention!?!

HELLO KITTY CONVENTION HITS U.S., AGWA PARTY COMEBACK, JOHNNY CASH AS A PSYCHOKILLER, THE REAL LINCOLN DEBATE, THE HISTORY OF RELIGION IN 90 SECONDS!

The fires of San Diego, which have displaced 500,000 people are captured in this astonishing photo series

Looking back at 95, Terkel recalls McCarthyism, the 'man on the street,' and expresses his dismay at the current state of the Union.

There will be a AGWA tasting THIS COMING SUNDAY at the L&L at 7pm

The last one I went to they served the drink free the entire time. At $8 a shot I think I did around 10 drinks! Free!

AGWA is made from coca leaves from Brazil and is created in Amsterdam. There are no other bars serving it here in Chicago.

There is only one bar in the entire midwest selling AGWA, a coca leaf liquor. The coca leaves are from Bolivia, and the liquor is made in Amsterdam. On Sunday On August 19 at the L&L Bar at Belmont and Clark the Agwa Girls are flying in from the west coast and you'll be able to buy shots before church groups and politicians go beserk. The event is from 6 to 9 and this liquor shot has pretty much ended all other liquor shots- from Jaeger to those shots with dumb sex names- they all seem tame now. Distilled and produced in Holland, AGWA de Bolivia is an Alco-Jolt made from the Bolivian coca leaf and contains Guarana and ginseng.

Available in standard dosage of 32 grams of coca leaf flavour per litre, or the more potent 40 grams of coca leaf flavour. Now you get your shot of booze, and a vial of lime powder which helps release the flavor - here are different ways to drink it: (this website has various men and women drinkers in stages of undress from Europe to the west coast so it is not ok for work)   http://agwabuzz.com/us/drink.php  Here is the website: http://agwabuzz.com/  The L&L is at 3207 N Clark. They were the bar that got people drinking PBR again.  http://www.yelp.com/biz/aioVFML-exUzW794nbtrJw

There is a Hello Kitty convention coming to America!  http://www.kittycon2008.com/  By the way, I learned today that HELLO KITTY has a birthday. Expect a special theme on the icon whose image adorns more items worldwide than any religious faith on earth November 1. If you'd like to read the head of HELLO KITTY HELL blog after being invited to the convention, this is a funny read: http://www.kittyhell.com/2007/10/22/hello-kitty-convention-2008/

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld has credited his Scientology faith for making him a better comic. The Seinfeld creator and star rarely talks about his connections to the controversial religion, but has opened up in a new magazine article. He told America's Parade that a high school teacher turned him onto Scientology almost 30 years ago.
"It was interesting," he said. "Believe it or not...it's extremely intellectual and clinical in its approach to problem-solving, which really appealed to me."

On Thursday, October 25, The Heartland Institute will celebrate the 23rd anniversary of its founding with a lively and fun reception and dinner with speakers at the Hilton Chicago Hotel. I hope you can join us!

The response to last year’s program, featuring a debate between Prof. Richard Epstein and Rev. Robert Sirico on the foundations of classical liberal ideals, was so positive that we’ve decided to go with the debate format again this year.

This year’s topic is: “Was Abraham Lincoln a friend or foe of American freedom?” Arguing in defense of Lincoln is Joseph A. Morris, president of the Lincoln Legal Foundation. Questioning Lincoln’s legacy is Thomas J. DiLorenzo, author of Lincoln Unmasked and The Real Lincoln. http://www.heartland.org/Benefit2007/welcome.cfm

How has the geography of religion evolved over the centuries, and where has it sparked wars? Our map gives us a brief history of the world's most well-known religions: Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Judaism. Selected periods of inter-religious bloodshed are also highlighted. Want to see 5,000 years of religion in 90 seconds? Ready, Set, Go! http://www.mapsofwar.com/ind/history-of-religion.html

Sigue Sigue Sputnik were the ultimate soundbite specialists, spewing forth cyberpunk slogans like there was no tomorrow.

But it was tomorrow that SSS had firmly in its sights, and now - poised to return to the scene like aliens revisiting the planet after an initial scouting mission - Tony James and his band of tomorrow people beg to be re-examined, especially in this post-electronica age. http://web.ukonline.co.uk/keith.dumble/hopper/sputnik1.html

Seventy years locked up in institutions hardly seems to be a punishment that befits the crime of stealing half-a-crown.

However, it is just such a fate that befell Jean Gambell when at the age of 15, in 1937, she was falsely accused of stealing 2s 6d (12.5p) from the doctor's surgery where she worked as a cleaner. She was sectioned under the 1890 Lunacy Act and even though the money was later found, she has been moved from mental institution to mental institution. When you are served wasabi with your sushi, the wasabi you are served is not always what it seems. Due to a high demand and limited supply, what is often served with your sushi is a mix of American horseradish, mustard and coloring, which the Japanese call seiyô wasabi ("western wasabi").

Rare documents about Freaks, Tod Browning's classic cult movie

Tod Browning's
Freaks (1932) is widely considered to be one of the greatest cult films of all time. Making the #3 spot in Entertainment Weekly's Top 50 Cult Movies list in their May 23, 2003 issue, Freaks was edged out only by The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) and This is Spinal Tap (1984)...This is no small feat for a film over seventy years old...

Beginning as an attempt by MGM to out-horror every horror film being made at that time,
Freaks turned out to be too far over the edge for 1930's audiences, eliciting gagged responses from audiences and critics alike. It was not until Freaks was rediscovered in the early 1960's that public opinion of the film began to change, and its reputation began to grow into that of the cult masterpiece it is widely considered to be today.

The 'Freaks' Show offers some rare documents on this great cult film that will give you a better understanding of the circumstances that yielded this flawed but lovable masterpiece of the macabre...   http://www.olgabaclanova.com/freaks_show.htm

When Prince Edward the 8th was in line for the throne, the world was told it was because he loved an American woman that he decided to step down. He took literally thousands of pictures, most of which depict local events such as leek shows and prizegivings. He knew that many of his photographs, when used in the newspapers, would be cropped. Also, the square format that he used often made it difficult to exclude unwanted details when he was actually taking the picture. In many cases it is these chance elements in Tommy's uncropped photographs that make his work so revealing. http://www.amber-online.com/exhibitions/consett

In Mississippi it has been discovered that the medical examiner is the only person doing autopsies. And he has given the prosecution everything they asked for. Now, it is dawning on people that many people serving time- might be innocent!  http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB119162544567850662-lMyQjAxMDE3OTAxNjYwMjY1Wj.html

Movie Moocher was built on a few simple premises. Many students bring DVDs with them to college. Most people enjoy watching DVDs, especially DVDs they don't already own. While there is probably a Blockbuster close by, that costs both time and money. Wouldn't it be easier if you could borrow the DVD from someone nearby who already has it?

So that's what Movie Moocher is. You sign up, and add DVDs you're willing to share with classmates. You search through the collective DVD library of your school. And you can request DVDs with a single click. http://www.moviemoocher.com/

The Ramones in their heyday -- here's one of their most popular boots, a stereo soundboard recording from their show at The Palladium in New York on New Year's Eve 1979. The setlist hits the high points of their first four classic records, and even includes one song from End Of The Century, their album produced by the now-infamous Phil Spector, which at the time was about six weeks from being released
