Is America in a period of cultural decay? "Among the conceits of our elite and media is the assumption that America, in the form that they wish to imagine it, is immortal. Part of this is the arrogance of the big, part comes from an admirable if naive faith in progress, part of it is pathological delusion. For a host of reasons, beginning with our own survival, it is long past time to permit the question to be raised: is America collapsing as a culture?"

IS THIS THE NEW JAMES BOND?

Tabloid reports this week have said the role will go to Daniel Craig, a blue-eyed British actor who would be the first blond Bond.

Although he’s not well known in the United States, Craig, 37, has a busy British career that includes roles in the landmark 1990s TV drama Our Friends in the North; and films including The Mother, Enduring Love; and Layer Cake.

He played Paul Newman’s sinister son in Road to Perdition, was poet Ted Hughes opposite Gwyneth Paltrow’s Sylvia Plath in Sylvia; and appeared in this year’s thriller The Jacket; with Adrien Brody.

Craig is also the tabloids’ dream Bond. He once dated headline-grabbing model Kate Moss and has been linked to Sienna Miller, his Layer Cake co-star. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,1-1823863,00.html

Liz Phair, the rocker who first gained acclaim with her 1993 album Exile In Guyville has recently come under attack as a sell-out. Much criticized for working with The Matrix, the record engineers who write and produce music for teen pop singer Avril Lavigne, Phair has said that her decision to go more commercial on her self-titled album Liz Phair was partly motivated by her financial concerns as a single mother. New York Press' Tom Birner asked her about this recent change in style, her follow-up CD Somebody's Miracle—and much else—as Phair gets set for a gig here in town.

Paradise Lost, John Milton's epic poem about Adam and Eve's temptation and fall, is to be turned into a feature film for the first time since its publication more than 330 years ago. Hollywood producers aim to keep the screen version faithful to Milton's 1667 original, a complex work comprising 12,000 lines of blank verse. The production is described as "epic in scope and size".

The people of Belgium have been left reeling by the first adult-only episode of the Smurfs, in which the blue-skinned cartoon characters' village is annihilated by warplanes.

The short but chilling film is the work of Unicef, the United Nations Children's Fund, and is to be broadcast on national television next week as a campaign advertisement.

The short film pulls no punches. It opens with the Smurfs dancing, hand-in-hand, around a campfire and singing the Smurf song. Bluebirds flutter past and rabbits gambol around their familiar village of mushroom- shaped houses until, without warning, bombs begin to rain from the sky.

Deep in today's downtown, but well north of the era's houses, is a tiny cartoon of a gallows from which a man hangs. It is inscribed "Plot Negro Gibbeted." Not far off is a small bonfire labeled "Plot Negro's burnt here."
In 1741, these "Plot Negroes" were accused of trying to burn down the city (the subject of a new book, "New York Burning," by the historian Jill Lepore). After confessions were obtained and a plot outlined, 13 blacks were burned at the stake and 17 hanged.

New York's involvement with slavery has been well known by scholars, and recent histories of New York have been fully cognizant of the facts. But the popular imagination is something else, and the unearthing of part of the African Burial Ground in Lower Manhattan in 1991 may have been a turning point, with the remains of more than 400 people from the 17th and 18th centuries discovered at a construction site. Those remains made slavery all too vivid: with the bones came buttons and polished stones, evidence of malnutrition and signs of injuries. Scholarship has increased in the years since, and some of it is surveyed in the exhibition's companion book, edited by Ira Berlin and Leslie M. Harris.   http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/07/arts/design/07slav.html

Slaves of Cherokee Indians want in to the tribe.

Stick Ross is thought to be the illegitimate grandson of Chief John Ross, who led the tribe along the Trail of Tears. Ross the younger was a respected Native American and a skilled diplomat who acted as a liaison between tribes and local townsfolk. "He knew sign language and spoke Cherokee and Seminole. He was a trapper and a farmer and a rancher," says Stick's great-grandson, Leslie Ross, a 56-year-old retired civil servant whose greatest joy is recounting the Stick trivia he learned from his family in Muskogee. "And he was sheriff at one time, too. He was pretty renowned in Tahlequah."

Stick may have died an exemplary citizen of the Cherokee Nation, but he was born into slavery. The Cherokee kept black slaves until 1866, when an emancipation treaty freed them from bondage and granted them full tribal citizenship. Known as the Freedmen, these men and women were embraced by the Cherokee as equals, and often married the offspring of their former masters. Like Stick, they identified with local cultures, spoke tribal languages, and took part in tribal religious rites.

And yet, three-quarters of a century after the death of Cherokee legend Stick Ross, there's no room for his great-grandson in the Cherokee Nation. Leslie Ross has been denied citizenship in the tribe on the grounds that he is not truly Indian. "They said I don't have any Indian blood. They say blacks have never had a part in the Cherokee Nation," says Ross, his usually calm voice swelling with anger. "The thing is, there wouldn't be a Cherokee Nation if it weren't for my great-grandfather. Jesus, he was more Indian than the Indians!"   http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/13.09/seminoles_pr.html

CATHOLIC CHURCH SAYS DON'T TAKE BIBLE LITERALLY, U.S FACES WORST HEALTH CARE CRISIS IN HISTORY: HOW TO PREPARE, MUSEUMS OF WASHINGTON, SEXUAL THEME PARK OPENS IN UK, WATCH ZOMBIE MOVIES ON YOUR COMPUTER!

The United States is facing the worst health care crisis in it's history. This is not a joke. Whole areas of cities could be shut down, schools closed for months, and that's just the beginning. Here is what you must do to prepare. And you must do it NOW. Let's all hope these events don't come to pass- but we have never been closer as a nation to the crisis we face today. Remember, the government has to protect everyone. You have only to protect your family. Here's what you need to do, before you are told to:

" A plan developed by the Bush administration to deal with any possible outbreak of pandemic flu shows that the United States is woefully unprepared for what could become the worst disaster in the nation's history.

A draft of the final plan, which has been years in the making and is expected to be released later this month, says a large outbreak that began in Asia would be likely, because of modern travel patterns, to reach the United States within "a few months or even weeks."

If such an outbreak occurred, hospitals would become overwhelmed, riots would engulf vaccination clinics, and even power and food would be in short supply, according to the plan, which was obtained by The New York Times."

THE hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church has published a teaching document instructing the faithful that some parts of the Bible are not actually true.

The Catholic bishops of England, Wales and Scotland are warning their five million worshippers, as well as any others drawn to the study of scripture, that they should not expect “total accuracy” from the Bible.

Welcome to www.carolinasoul.org, the online home for discographies of 45-rpm soul recordings made in the Carolinas in the 1960s through 1980s. The North/South Carolina discography is currently divided into two sections: (1) local NC/SC labels that issued at least one soul record, and (2) NC/SC soul artists on non-NC/SC and national labels. The local label section is sub-divided alphabetically by label name. In some cases, non-soul releases are listed and are indicated as such. The Kinsey Report of 1948 famously lifted the lid on American sexual behavior. But when a similar study was conducted in Britain the following year, the findings were so outrageous they were suppressed. Only now have they been revealed.

In these liberated times, when sex is almost a constant undercurrent of everyday life, it's hard to imagine how much of a taboo sex once was.

Yet when a group of young researchers set out to probe British sexual behavior in 1949 their findings were considered so outrageous they were instantly swept under the carpet; banished to the archives of a university.

Only now, more than 50 years on, have the results come to light, revealed in a new BBC program. The findings show that the prim and proper façade of post-war Britain hid some remarkable truths about sexual attitudes and experience.

The drug buprenorphine appears effective in treating teens addicted to heroin and other opiates, researchers report.

The use of heroin among adolescents has more than doubled in the past 10 years, noted researchers from the University of Vermont. There's also been an increase in this age group of the illicit use of prescription opiates such as OxyContin and Vicodin. Opiates are the second most commonly used illicit drugs among teens, second only to marijuana.

Young women are leading the way in tearing down sexual taboos in North America, where teenagers are having more sex at a younger age than their parents and grandparents, a new survey showed.

Freewheeling young women in the United States and Canada first have intercourse at the age of 15, partake more in oral sex than previous generations and are far less prudish, according to a landmark new report by researchers at California's San Diego State University.

Between 1943 and 1999, the age of first intercourse dropped to 15 from 19 for females, while the percentage of sexually active young women rose to 47 percent from just 13 percent in 1943, according to the study that appears in the most recent issue of the Review of General Psychology. http://www.breitbart.com/news/2005/10/04/051004054737.fzs4blx5.html

For many people their first introduction to the world of James Bond was via the paperback versions of Ian Fleming's novels that first appeared during the mid 1950's. Since then the Bond novels have seldom been out of print and have been reissued with many different covers, some featuring superb artwork that has rarely been seen since. The 1950's covers had painted artwork that evolved in to the simple graphic representations of the 1960's and the superb "Still-life" series from the UK that appeared in the 1970's.    http://www.artofjamesbond.com/paperbacks.htm

University Press of Mississippi

"John Woo: Interviews" is the first authoritative oral history of the director's life, films and legacy. Edited by journalist Robert K. Elder, the volume represents unprecedented access to the director in creating an encyclopedia of Woo's career and cinema from the 1970s to present. Published by the University Press of Mississippi, "John Woo: Interviews" tracks Woo early Hong Kong comedies and kung fu films to the later “bullet ballets” of "The Killer" and "Hard Boiled" and Hollywood blockbusters "Face/Off" and "Mission: Impossible 2." Through his conversations and research, Elder reveals Woo as a peaceful, deeply religious man who hates violence -- yet has become the master of its portrayal.  http://www.robelder.com/

Making sausage at home is a rewarding and interesting craft. In complexity it is somewhere between making bread and making beer or wine. The reward comes in the flavors that can't be matched by the industrial sausage found in the supermarket and the knowledge of being in control of every ingredient that goes into the sausage.  http://schmidling.netfirms.com/saus.htm

We've all heard about celebs who haven't let dyslexia hold them back — Tom Cruise and Cher, to name two. Then there is Paul Orfalea, the man who founded Kinko's.

As Orfalea points out in his memoir, Copy This!, "Not many kids manage to flunk the second grade, but I did."  http://www.usatoday.com/money/books/reviews/2005-10-03-copy-this-usat_x.htm

Inside the sanctuary of the abbey of St. Sixtus of Westvleteren is a beer lover's dream and a businessman's nightmare.

Piety, not profit, is what these monks seek. The St. Sixtus monks break every rule in Business 101 except attention to quality. And therein may lie the secret of their success in brewing a beer that some rank among the world's best and that is so hard to get there's a black market for it.

Computer-generated portraits of Tutankhamun in an exhibit coming to Fort Lauderdale's Museum of Art in December have sparked criticism and protests by black activists who say they depict the boy king as white.

Researchers hired by the National Geographic Society, one of the exhibit's sponsors, say current forensic data and recent CT scans of his mummy were used to create the images.

African scholars and black activists dispute the portrayal and predict protests when the show moves here like those that have occurred in Los Angeles. The debate is similar to the question of whether Jesus was black.  http://www.orlandosentinel.com/orl-tut2505sep25,0,5185973.story?coll=orl-home-headlines

Among the greatest of the Ancient Olympic boxers – indeed one -of the greatest Olympic athletes –was Theagenes of Thasos. A boxer, pankratist (no-holds barred fighting) and runner, Theagenes captured the boxing title at the 75th Olympiad in 480 BC, and, four years later, he won the Pankration (no-holds-barred) title. Like all Olympic champions, Theagenes’ victories offered him immortality, and mythology was soon to follow..

The story no publication in Chicago is covering:
Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes corruption, today announced that on January 17, 2006,Jesse Lee Peterson, et al., v. Jesse Jackson, et al. (BC 266505) will go to trial in Los Angeles County Superior Court after a ruling last week by Judge George H. Wu.  Judicial Watch filed the lawsuit against Jackson, his son Jonathan, and others on behalf of Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, who was the victim of a physical and verbal assault at an event hosted by Jackson’s Rainbow/PUSH Coalition and Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. in December 2001.  Rev. Peterson is an ordained minister, who has dedicated his life to working with underprivileged black youth and men in our society.

The Jacksons and the Rainbow/PUSH coalition, who had sought to have the case dismissed, will now face multiple civil charges, including: Assault, Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress and a California Civil Rights Claim.  Jonathan Jackson also will face the additional charges of Battery and False Imprisonment.
