Surf W/A Cure For The Common Cold

FINALLY: A CURE FOR THE COMMON COLD, GOOGLE GOES INTO TV, HIDDEN ART IN DA VINCI PAINTINGS, THE CLINTON CONDOM, SNL CELEBRITY JEOPARDY, SUPERBUG HITS CHICAGO STREETS, THE BLIND DEAD SERIES!
After years of prescribing everything from placebo's to penicillin (mostly to shut up patients), Vick's has discovered an actual cure. http://www.int.iol.co.za/index.php?art_id=vn20050921070308138C235200&set_id=1&click_id=31

Three Chicago-area children have died of a toxic shock syndrome-like illness caused by a superbug they caught in the community and not in the hospital, where the germ is usually found.

The cases show that this already worrisome staph germ has become even more dangerous by acquiring the ability to cause this shock-like condition.

"There's a new kid on the block," said Dr. John Bartlett of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, referring to the added strength of the superbug known as methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA.

Here's the entire collection of all 13 "Celebrity Jeopardy" episodes on Saturday Night Live. Enjoy! Some brilliant material here.

The flu vaccine, a cornerstone of public health policy, is only mildly effective in the population for which it is supposedly most critical: the elderly.

According to a study appearing in the Sept. 22 online issue of The Lancet, vaccines against influenza are only "modestly effective" in people in long-term care facilities and even less effective for elderly people still living in the community.

That research is twinned with another flu study, which found more bad news: that resistance to drugs used to treat influenza has risen 12 percent in the past decade.

This finding, the authors stated, raises questions about the government's policy of stockpiling such drugs.  http://www.forbes.com/lifestyle/health/feeds/hscout/2005/09/21/hscout528105.html

They are called THE BLIND DEAD, heretic horsemen whose eyes were burned out to prevent them from finding their way back from Hell. Over the course of 4 unforgettable films, writer/director Amando de Ossorio created what fright fans worldwide consider to be one of the most startling series in horror history. This unique quartet of shockers delivers a relentless onslaught of creepy atmosphere, shocking violence, forbidden sexuality, and the still-chilling icons of EuroHorror: The eyeless undead who hunt by sound in their quest for human flesh. Don’t move… don’t breathe... don’t let them hear your heart beating: THE BLIND DEAD
are back!  TRAILERS ARE NOT OK FOR WORK:

Before we spend $200 billion on New Orleans disaster relief, can we just pause for about three seconds, please? That should be long enough to divide one number by another. The numbers I have in mind are, on the one hand, $200 billion, and, on the other hand, 1 million people—the prestorm population of the New Orleans area, broadly defined.

Two-hundred billion divided by 1 million is 200,000. For the cost of reconstructing New Orleans, the government could simply give $200,000 to every resident of the region—that's $800,000 for a family of four. Given a choice, which do you think the people down there would prefer?

The Attempted Militarization of the Jetsons, BJORK FILM WARS, WHACKY STUPID RADIO DJ STUNT- TAKE DRUGS ON AIR, KEVIN SMITH'S BLOG!

A lesser known episode of "The Jetsons" speaks directly to our current plight: the relentless but eternally floundering attempt to militarize a bourgeois society that is more interested in consumption and leisure than serving a mythical national ethos.

In the Jetsons' world of the future, people are pretty much the same as they are today, except that they have more gizmos and far more leisure time.

That's the future: it is an extension of today, just as today is an extension of everything that followed before. There is no dramatic hinge of history that causes all rules to change, as socialist or fascist or other totalitarian ideologies imagine. It is just the same old struggle playing itself out in different ways.  http://www.mises.org/story/1920

BEST SITE OF THE DAY:
Have you ever wondered how a Madonna track would sound if she were backed
up by The Sex Pistols, or what a certain Britney Spears single would have
been like if the guys from Kraftwerk had provided the music? Imagine that
Beyonce had had a career in the 1970's, and Soft Cell had chosen one of her
tracks for their break-through hit? Here's another one: how would Nirvana
have sounded in today's electro-revival? Wouldn't you like to hear that?
Well, believe it or not, all the above recordings already exist. And so do
many more unusual combinations for that matter. It's not that these
artists have ever been secretly together in a recording studio, but rather
that their tracks have been (re)mixed without them knowing it. Welcome in
the fascinating world of mash-ups.

A mash-up is a track in which the vocals of one track have been mixed over
the music of another track. No big deal - you might think - nothing new
there, people have already been doing that for years. That's right, but a
mash-up goes a tiny bit further then the so-called "megamixes" or remixes
you're probably thinking of right now. A mash-up is a completely new track
- a track that sounds like an original recording... as if it had always
been like that... as if it was actually recorded by the original
artists. But what really makes a mash-up unique - and different from the
mixes in the past - is that it uses elements of tracks from different
genres. So it is perfectly possible to hear Madonna go punk, Britney go
electro, or Beyonce do it '80s style... Apart from using elements of
different artists who perform in different music styles, maybe the most
important characteristic of a mash-up is that the tracks being used blend
seamlessly into the new track. A track that should be at least as good as
- and in most cases, better - then the original versions. That's why it's
often called "the best music the original artists never made"...

New Orleans flood- I Smell A Graft- I Mean, Rat:  Louisiana's top hurricane experts have rejected the official explanations for the floodwall collapses that inundated much of New Orleans, concluding that Hurricane Katrina's storm surges were much smaller than authorities have suggested and that the city's flood- protection system should have kept most of the city dry.

The Army Corps of Engineers has said that Katrina was just too massive for a system that was not intended to protect the city from a storm greater than a Category 3 hurricane, and that the floodwall failures near Lake Pontchartrain were caused by extraordinary surges that overtopped the walls.

But with the help of complex computer models and stark visual evidence, scientists and engineers at Louisiana State University's Hurricane Center have concluded that Katrina's surges did not come close to overtopping those barriers. That would make faulty design, inadequate construction or some combination of the two the likely cause of the breaching of the floodwalls along the 17th Street and London Avenue canals -- and the flooding of most of New Orleans.

Rizoli said his dealership makes sure not to buy such vehicles, which could have "major electrical issues" after sitting in water for extended periods.
"Sometimes," Rizoli said, "even the most cautious dealer will end up with (a flood-damaged car) that slipped through the cracks."

It was a shocking series of torture killings that rocked Canada. Torture killings of schoolgirls. It was done by a couple. They even raped and killed the female of the
couples teen sister. The authorities presumed the pretty girl involved had to be forced into it. So they gave her a 12 year sentence to frame her boyfriend and tell
what happened. Then videos were found, and to the authorities horror, it was clear she was the orchestrator of the savage killings. She is now fighting the rules
imposed on her during her probation. What are these horrible rules she demands be lifted?

Homolka will argue that conditions imposed on her release are too strict and violate her constitutional rights. Among other things,

Homolka must report regularly to police, give them notice if she leaves Quebec and avoid communicating with violent offenders.

DJ FOOD: "RAIDING THE 20TH CENTURY" EPIC

But as usual, download fast.....

'Everything Has To End...'

"On January 18th 2004, Strictly Kev premiered the original 'Raiding The 20th Century' on XFM's 'The Remix' show in London. It was a 40 minute attempt to catalogue the history of cut up music - be it avant garde tape manipulation, turntable megamixes or bastard pop mash ups. It rapidly spread throughout the web and managed to cause a full scale server crash on boomselection.info when they hosted it due to the volume of net traffic.

Shortly afterwards he read Paul Morley's recently published book 'Words & Music' and was amazed that certain chapters mirrored parts of his mix. Apart from the fact that the title, 'Raiding the 20th Century' was coined by Morley 20 years before for a future Art of Noise project, he also featured Alvin Lucier, who - purely by chance - was sampled on the opening track of the mix.

Kev decided to expand his idea to make the defnitive document on cut up music including many other parts, omitted by the constraints of the original radio session. After months of further research he tracked Morley down and they recorded passages from 'Words & Music' specially for this mix in an attempt tomarry the two and finish something that neither of them actually started. A year to the day of the original airing, the newly expanded version is ready."

That translates to 0.5 percent of the male population in the world, or roughly 16 million descendants living today. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/02/0214_030214_genghis.html

When it comes to creativity, there's good news and very good news. The good news is that the mysteries of the creative process are finally giving way to a rigorous scientific analysis. The very good news is that, with the right skills, you can boost your own creative output by a factor of 10 or more. Significant creativity is within everyone's reach--no exceptions. What's more, greater creativity breeds greater happiness. The creative process is itself a source of joy for most people. And with new creative powers we're also better able to solve the little problems that beset us daily.

In the wake of Hurricane Betsy 40 years ago, Congress approved a massive hurricane barrier to protect New Orleans from storm surges that could inundate the city.

But the project, signed into law by President Johnson, was derailed in 1977 by an environmental lawsuit. Now the question is: Could that barrier have protected New Orleans from the damage wrought by Hurricane Katrina?

"If we had built the barriers, New Orleans would not be flooded," said Joseph Towers, the retired chief counsel for the Army Corps of Engineers New Orleans district.  A shocking story!

Some books achieve the status of cultural landmarks: Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace, Marcel Proust's Remembrance of Things Past and, more recently, acclaimed blockbusting novels such as Vikram Seth's A Suitable Boy and Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. The guilty truth is, though, that imposing volumes of this size and significance tend to sit pristine on the bookshelf and are never read.

The publishing industry now has an answer. It is bringing out new editions of some of the great, often unread, works with a fresh emphasis on 'accessibility'. Some may call it dumbing down.  http://books.guardian.co.uk/news/articles/0,6109,1567332,00.html

Back in 1943, when Ike Sewell opened a restaurant at the corner of Ohio and Wabash Streets in Chicago, Americans ate pizza primarily as a snack. Ike figured that if you combined some of Italy's old, authentic recipes with impressive quantities of the finest meats, fresh cheeses, ripe vegetables and flavorful spices, pizza would become a hearty meal. He redefined pizza by creating a deep-dish crust and filling it with huge quantities of fresh, delicious ingredients. In doing so, he started an American tradition: the Chicago Deep Dish Pizza. He also established "the Uno Way" - using only the freshest ingredients and lots of 'em.  AND YOU CAN GET FROZEN PIZZAS TO GO IF YOU DON'T WANT TO WAIT!

The composer Harold Arlen, a dapper man whose songs brought something both dashing and deep to the Republic, liked to tell a story about the time he danced with Marilyn Monroe. “People are staring at us,” Arlen whispered to Monroe. “They must know who you are!” she replied. The joke, as Arlen knew, was on him. Although his catalogue included “I've Got the World on a String,” “That Old Black Magic,” “One for My Baby (and One More for the Road),” “Get Happy,” and “Over the Rainbow”—which was voted the twentieth century's No. 1 song by the Recording Industry Association of America—Arlen was virtually anonymous. “Who's Harold Arlen?” Truman Capote asked in 1953, when it was suggested that he collaborate with the composer on the musical version of his short story “House of Flowers.”

IAN FLEMING: FANTASIST- OR PROPHET?, DEBUNKING SKIN CARE MYTHS, COOK SPOTTED DICK, SEX ADVICE FROM SIDESHOW PERFORMERS!

Ian Fleming wrote the James Bond books, and had been a spy himself. For years these books were unavailable here, out of print. They were dismissed as being silly. They often postulated a multi billionaire, with the money to hire his own killers, military and scientists. Aligned with no country, at war with the world. Today however, in dealing with Osama and Al Qaeda- was Fleming trying to warn us what the future held? Today these books have a resonance they did not have when they were released.
More than ever, we need James Bond. Let the owners of the Bond franchise take note. Let's get back to the books people, what he wrote about is now real.

If utopia is supposed to be the ideal and perfect place, where everyone lives in harmony, then why do so many of them turn out to suck?

We dream our fears as well as hopes, reflecting all the agonies and contradictions of the waking world; in dreams, demons rise from our darkest places. This is the dangerous element in utopian aspiration, the monster behind the smiling face. Utopias can embody the highest hopes of humankind and frameworks for continuous evolution, but they can also reflect our worst fears and sickest appetites—not to mention a mania for power and control that is latent in every person...

WHY DOES THE PRESS PROMOTE BAD SCIENCE?, WHO WILL MAKE MILLIONS OFF NEW ORLEANS CLEANUP?, PIG ORGANS TO SAVE PEOPLE?, RUSSIANS TAPE AN EXORCISM, GOODBYE CLARENCE GATEMOUTH BROWN, THE EVOLUTION OF THE GERMAN HELMET!

Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, the singer and guitarist who built a 50-year career playing blues, country, jazz and Cajun music, died Saturday in his hometown of Orange, Texas, where he had gone to escape Hurricane Katrina. He was 81.

Brown, who had been battling lung cancer and heart disease, was in ill health for the past year, said Rick Cady, his booking agent.

Cady said the musician was with his family at his brother’s house when he died. Brown’s home in Slidell, La...was destroyed by Katrina, Cady said.

A sixteen-year-old girl sits in a chair in a Russian Orthodox Church. She is being held down by her mother. Light filters in from high windows and the air is thick with tension and the smell of holy incense. A priest stands over her reading the rite of exorcism. The girl squirms in her mother’s arms, groaning and growling as if the priest’s words were a torment to her mind and soul. The girl struggles violently, her groans becoming inhuman howls and deep, guttural moans of psychological pain. Then she lashes out at the priest, and in a voice that seems not to be her own, spits words of defiance.

This is not a scene from a Hollywood production. This is a partial description of an actual exorcism that took place in a Russian parish on May 1, 2004.

BEST SITE OF THE DAY:
Why is science in the media so often pointless, simplistic, boring, or just plain wrong? Like a proper little Darwin, I've been collecting specimens, making careful observations, and now I'm ready to present my theory.

It is my hypothesis that in their choice of stories, and the way they cover them, the media create a parody of science, for their own means. They then attack this parody as if they were critiquing science. This week we take the gloves off and do some serious typing.

Science stories usually fall into three families: wacky stories, scare stories and "breakthrough" stories.
