The drug buprenorphine appears effective in treating teens addicted to heroin and other opiates, researchers report.
The use of heroin among adolescents has more than doubled in the past 10 years, noted researchers from the University of Vermont. There's also been an increase in this age group of the illicit use of prescription opiates such as OxyContin and Vicodin. Opiates are the second most commonly used illicit drugs among teens, second only to marijuana.

(BC 266505) will go to trial in Los Angeles County Superior Court after a ruling last week by Judge George H. Wu. Judicial Watch filed the lawsuit against Jackson, his son Jonathan, and others on behalf of Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, who was the victim of a physical and verbal assault at an event hosted by Jackson’s Rainbow/PUSH Coalition and Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. in December 2001. Rev. Peterson is an ordained minister, who has dedicated his life to working with underprivileged black youth and men in our society.
The Jacksons and the Rainbow/PUSH coalition, who had sought to have the case dismissed, will now face multiple civil charges, including: Assault, Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress and a California Civil Rights Claim. Jonathan Jackson also will face the additional charges of Battery and False Imprisonment.

Computer scientists have created a hat that can read your thoughts. It allows you to stroll down a virtual street. All you have to do is think about walking.
Called a brain-computer interface, the device detects activity in certain brain areas linked to movement, and uses the signals to mimic that movement in a virtual world. The technology could one day help paralysed patients to move robotic arms, or help sufferers of motor neuron disease to type out words on a virtual keyboard. “Just thinking about movement activates the same neurons as actually moving,” explains Gert Pfurtscheller of Graz University of Technology in Austria, who has been working on the device for around four years. By picking up on these bursts of nerve activity, the computer can decide whether you are thinking about moving your hands or feet, and react accordingly. I was out delivering cards for the upcoming mashup night at Sonotheque ( http://djpsychomike.blogdrive.com ), was walking from Addison to Belmont on Clark when I looked into a store window and was confronted with Japanese pop culture. DVD's of Japanese, Korean and Hong Kong movies, Godzilla toys by the bunch and loads of cool toys. I walked in- I felt like I was in the museum of Japanese pop culture. The store, J1Toy.com is at 3326 N. Clark Street and just seeing the toys is worth the trip. Very cool stuff. Wait- THIS is the strangest statue ever in public: The idea is disarmingly simple. Two bronze sculptures pee into their oddly-shaped enclosure.

Don Adams, the wry-voiced comedian who starred as the fumbling secret agent Maxwell Smart in the 1960s TV spoof of James Bond movies, "Get Smart," has died. He was 82.
