Inside the sanctuary of the abbey of St. Sixtus of Westvleteren is a beer lover's dream and a businessman's nightmare.

Piety, not profit, is what these monks seek. The St. Sixtus monks break every rule in Business 101 except attention to quality. And therein may lie the secret of their success in brewing a beer that some rank among the world's best and that is so hard to get there's a black market for it.

Computer-generated portraits of Tutankhamun in an exhibit coming to Fort Lauderdale's Museum of Art in December have sparked criticism and protests by black activists who say they depict the boy king as white.

Researchers hired by the National Geographic Society, one of the exhibit's sponsors, say current forensic data and recent CT scans of his mummy were used to create the images.

African scholars and black activists dispute the portrayal and predict protests when the show moves here like those that have occurred in Los Angeles. The debate is similar to the question of whether Jesus was black.  http://www.orlandosentinel.com/orl-tut2505sep25,0,5185973.story?coll=orl-home-headlines

Like all Olympic champions, Theagenes’ victories offered him immortality, and mythology was soon to follow..

The story of bra burning feminists has been reported for decades. It isn't true. So who first started the rumor? Prepare for a shock!

There’s a reward out for a yellow rubber ducky — a bounty that Curt Ebbesmeyer hopes will further the science of ocean currents and spread the word about ocean trash. Footing the bill, so to speak, is the company that made the ducks — 29,000 of them .

The story no publication in Chicago is covering:
Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes corruption, today announced that on January 17, 2006,Jesse Lee Peterson, et al., v. Jesse Jackson, et al. (BC 266505) will go to trial in Los Angeles County Superior Court after a ruling last week by Judge George H. Wu.  Judicial Watch filed the lawsuit against Jackson, his son Jonathan, and others on behalf of Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, who was the victim of a physical and verbal assault at an event hosted by Jackson’s Rainbow/PUSH Coalition and Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. in December 2001.  Rev. Peterson is an ordained minister, who has dedicated his life to working with underprivileged black youth and men in our society.

The Jacksons and the Rainbow/PUSH coalition, who had sought to have the case dismissed, will now face multiple civil charges, including: Assault, Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress and a California Civil Rights Claim.  Jonathan Jackson also will face the additional charges of Battery and False Imprisonment.

Computer scientists have created a hat that can read your thoughts. It allows you to stroll down a virtual street. All you have to do is think about walking.

Called a brain-computer interface, the device detects activity in certain brain areas linked to movement, and uses the signals to mimic that movement in a virtual world. The technology could one day help paralysed patients to move robotic arms, or help sufferers of motor neuron disease to type out words on a virtual keyboard. “Just thinking about movement activates the same neurons as actually moving,” explains Gert Pfurtscheller of Graz University of Technology in Austria, who has been working on the device for around four years. By picking up on these bursts of nerve activity, the computer can decide whether you are thinking about moving your hands or feet, and react accordingly.  (Let's see, on my virtual Street I can run into Pamela Anderson and Adrianna Lima and....)

I was out delivering cards for the upcoming mashup night at Sonotheque ( http://djpsychomike.blogdrive.com ), was walking from Addison to Belmont on Clark when I looked into a store window and was confronted with Japanese pop culture. DVD's of Japanese, Korean and Hong Kong movies, Godzilla toys by the bunch and loads of cool toys. I walked in- I felt like I was in the museum of Japanese pop culture. The store, J1Toy.com is at 3326 N. Clark Street and just seeing the toys is worth the trip. Very cool stuff. There is also a website (hence the name) http://j1toy.com/  and they have a store in NYC at 102 St. Marks Place W and another in Arlington Hts. IL, 43 W. Golf Road. This place gets a ten for cool toys.

"It is a staple scene of B-movies and Westerns: the cowboy stumbles into a patch of quicksand and is sucked under until only his stetson remains on top, or sinks up to his neck until hauled out by his sidekick.

Both scenarios have now been proved to fly in the face of physics. Research has shown that it is impossible for people to sink into quicksand much beyond the waist — but it is equally impossible to pull someone out once they are stuck."  http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,13509-1802439,00.html

OUR TIME IS COMING, WHAT WOULD XENA DO?, DOG FLU SWEEPS NATION!
The archipelago is named after Robinson Crusoe, but perhaps it should have been called Treasure Island.
A long quest for booty from the Spanish colonial era appears to be culminating in Chile with the announcement by a group of adventurers that they have found an estimated 600 barrels of gold coins and Incan jewels on the remote Pacific island.  "The biggest treasure in history has been located," said Fernando Uribe-Etxeverria, a lawyer for Wagner, the Chilean company leading the search. Mr Uribe-Etxeverria estimated the value of the buried treasure at US$10bn (Ł5.6bn).

Wait- THIS is the strangest statue ever in public: The idea is disarmingly simple. Two bronze sculptures pee into their oddly-shaped enclosure.

While they are peeing, the two figures move realistically. An electric mechanism driven by a couple of microproccesors swivels the upper part of the body, while the penis goes up and down. The stream of water writes quotes from famous Prague residents.

Visitor can interupt them by sending SMS message from mobile phone to a number, displayed next to the sculptures. The living statue then ‘writes’ the text of the message, before carrying on as before.  Don't miss the videos of the sculpture in action!  http://www.davidcerny.cz/EN/piss.html

Three Chicago-area children have died of a toxic shock syndrome-like illness caused by a superbug they caught in the community and not in the hospital, where the germ is usually found.

The cases show that this already worrisome staph germ has become even more dangerous by acquiring the ability to cause this shock-like condition.

The flu vaccine, a cornerstone of public health policy, is only mildly effective in the population for which it is supposedly most critical: the elderly.

According to a study appearing in the Sept. 22 online issue of The Lancet, vaccines against influenza are only "modestly effective" in people in long-term care facilities and even less effective for elderly people still living in the community.

That research is twinned with another flu study, which found more bad news: that resistance to drugs used to treat influenza has risen 12 percent in the past decade.

This finding, the authors stated, raises questions about the government's policy of stockpiling such drugs.  http://www.forbes.com/lifestyle/health/feeds/hscout/2005/09/21/hscout528105.html

This unique quartet of shockers delivers a relentless onslaught of creepy atmosphere, shocking violence, forbidden sexuality, and the still-chilling icons of EuroHorror: The eyeless undead who hunt by sound in their quest for human flesh. Don’t move… don’t breathe... don’t let them hear your heart beating: THE BLIND DEAD
are back!  TRAILERS ARE NOT OK FOR WORK:

Before we spend $200 billion on New Orleans disaster relief, can we just pause for about three seconds, please? That should be long enough to divide one number by another. The numbers I have in mind are, on the one hand, $200 billion, and, on the other hand, 1 million people—the prestorm population of the New Orleans area, broadly defined.

Two-hundred billion divided by 1 million is 200,000. For the cost of reconstructing New Orleans, the government could simply give $200,000 to every resident of the region—that's $800,000 for a family of four. Given a choice, which do you think the people down there would prefer?

The Attempted Militarization of the Jetsons, BJORK FILM WARS, WHACKY STUPID RADIO DJ STUNT- TAKE DRUGS ON AIR, KEVIN SMITH'S BLOG!

A lesser known episode of "The Jetsons" speaks directly to our current plight: the relentless but eternally floundering attempt to militarize a bourgeois society that is more interested in consumption and leisure than serving a mythical national ethos.

In the Jetsons' world of the future, people are pretty much the same as they are today, except that they have more gizmos and far more leisure time.

That's the future: it is an extension of today, just as today is an extension of everything that followed before. There is no dramatic hinge of history that causes all rules to change, as socialist or fascist or other totalitarian ideologies imagine. It is just the same old struggle playing itself out in different ways.  http://www.mises.org/story/1920

BEST SITE OF THE DAY:
Have you ever wondered how a Madonna track would sound if she were backed
up by The Sex Pistols, or what a certain Britney Spears single would have
been like if the guys from Kraftwerk had provided the music? Imagine that
Beyonce had had a career in the 1970's, and Soft Cell had chosen one of her
tracks for their break-through hit? Here's another one: how would Nirvana
have sounded in today's electro-revival? Wouldn't you like to hear that?
Well, believe it or not, all the above recordings already exist. And so do
many more unusual combinations for that matter. It's not that these
artists have ever been secretly together in a recording studio, but rather
that their tracks have been (re)mixed without them knowing it. Welcome in
the fascinating world of mash-ups.

A mash-up is a track in which the vocals of one track have been mixed over
the music of another track. No big deal - you might think - nothing new
there, people have already been doing that for years. That's right, but a
mash-up goes a tiny bit further then the so-called "megamixes" or remixes
you're probably thinking of right now. A mash-up is a completely new track
- a track that sounds like an original recording... as if it had always
been like that... as if it was actually recorded by the original
artists. But what really makes a mash-up unique - and different from the
mixes in the past - is that it uses elements of tracks from different
genres. So it is perfectly possible to hear Madonna go punk, Britney go
electro, or Beyonce do it '80s style... Apart from using elements of
different artists who perform in different music styles, maybe the most
important characteristic of a mash-up is that the tracks being used blend
seamlessly into the new track. A track that should be at least as good as
- and in most cases, better - then the original versions. That's why it's
often called "the best music the original artists never made"...

New Orleans flood- I Smell A Graft- I Mean, Rat:  Louisiana's top hurricane experts have rejected the official explanations for the floodwall collapses that inundated much of New Orleans, concluding that Hurricane Katrina's storm surges were much smaller than authorities have suggested and that the city's flood- protection system should have kept most of the city dry.

The Army Corps of Engineers has said that Katrina was just too massive for a system that was not intended to protect the city from a storm greater than a Category 3 hurricane, and that the floodwall failures near Lake Pontchartrain were caused by extraordinary surges that overtopped the walls.

But with the help of complex computer models and stark visual evidence, scientists and engineers at Louisiana State University's Hurricane Center have concluded that Katrina's surges did not come close to overtopping those barriers. That would make faulty design, inadequate construction or some combination of the two the likely cause of the breaching of the floodwalls along the 17th Street and London Avenue canals -- and the flooding of most of New Orleans.
