IS FAITH COMPATIBLE WITH SCIENCE?, THE JUKEBOX SPEAKS, PAIN CAUSED BY EMOTIONAL STRESS IS WORSE THAN PHYSICAL PAIN, HITLER'S MAD DREAM, HOLLYWOOD SQUARES TRIBUTE, HOWLIN' WOLF

Sadly, I guess we all saw this coming. O-J Simpson was a bloody mess the other day -- and this time, he was the one who was allegedly attacked by a family member. Simpson's oldest daughter reportedly opened a can of whup-ass on the former football star and his girlfriend.

Pain caused by emotional distress is more deeply felt and longer lasting than that caused by physical injuries, according to a new study. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/2639959/Emotional-pain-hurts-more-than-physical-pain-researchers-say.html

Is faith compatible with science? Does science take faith into account? Should scientists keep religious faith in mind while they do their scientific theorizing, their scientific experimenting, their scientific … But here I begin to lose faith in my ability to ask the question. I have some idea what God does. I have no idea what scientists do. My entire store of information about scientific activity comes from what I've seen in the movies. There, scientists used to be represented as men in white coats busy with incomprehensible jumbles of glass tubing connected to foaming beakers and bubbling test tubes. Now, scientists are represented as men (and women) in white coats busy with incomprehensible jumbles of numbers on computer screens. All I can really tell you about science is that its set designers aren't as good as they used to be.

The economy shifted to a higher gear in the spring, growing at its fastest pace in nearly a year as foreign buyers snapped up U.S. exports and tax rebates spurred shoppers at home.

The Commerce Department reported Thursday that gross domestic product, or GDP, increased at a 3.3 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter. The revised reading was much better than the government's initial estimate of a 1.9 percent pace and exceeded economists' expectations for a 2.7 percent growth rate.

Three vast tunnels were opened under central Berlin this month, giving a glimpse of Adolf Hitler's megalomaniac vision of a new architectural centre for the capital of Nazi Germany.

The 16-metre (50-foot) deep tunnels were constructed in 1938 as part of an underground transport network beneath a series of bombastic buildings designed by Nazi architect Albert Speer, including the biggest domed hall the world had ever seen. From Surfer Drewster in Evanston.

You probably already knew that Nikola Tesla, who developed alternating current electricity, was so OCD that he couldn't eat food until he'd determined its exact mass. But did you know that Jack Whiteside Parsons, founder of NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, was a Pagan who loved orgies? Or that Marie Curie, who discovered radium and coined the term "radioactive," suffered bouts of depression because as a woman she wasn't allowed to work as a professor even after she'd won two Nobel Prizes? This week you can delve into the lives (and madness) of well-known scientists with a new book from Daniel "How to Survive a Robot Uprising" Wilson and Anna C. Long, The Mad Scientist Hall of Fame.

Long admired by the Rolling Stones, the 1962 Howlin' Wolf album was a must for anyone into Chicago bluesHowlin' Wolf's last album was The Back Door Wolf, which was finished in August 1973. Parents are angry. There are lawyers involved. Conflicting and wild accusations are flying. The adults are fighting over the kids.Sounds like a nasty divorce, but it’s actually a fight between a youth baseball league, one of its coaches and some parents.

The fighting started this week when Coach Wilfred Vidro refused a directive by league officials to replace 9-year-old pitcher Jericho Scott, whose pitching they say is so hard, fast and accurate that it might frighten or discourage other players.

President Obama is forced to hit the ground running after it is announced that multinational forces have invaded Iran from Iraq to take out suspected "nuclear facilities," an attack secretly ordered by President Bush before his successor took the oath of office. John Woo, Douglas Feith, and other former government officials appear on television to explain the constitutionality of this action. General Petraeus is fired when he refuses Obama's countermand and is replaced by a recommissioned Wesley Clark. Obama labors around the clock to minimize the damage and to replace other officers who have resigned in protest, including all of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Britain is the worst country in the Western world in which to be a child, according to a recent UNICEF report. Ordinarily, I would not set much store by such a report; but in this case, I think it must be right—not because I know so much about childhood in all the other 20 countries examined but because the childhood that many British parents give to their offspring is so awful that it is hard to conceive of worse, at least on a mass scale. The two poles of contemporary British child rearing are neglect and overindulgence.

Consider one British parent, Fiona MacKeown, who in November 2007 went on a six-month vacation to Goa, India, with her boyfriend and eight of her nine children by five different fathers, none of whom ever contributed financially for long to the children's upkeep. (The child left behind—her eldest, at 19—was a drug addict.) She received $50,000 in welfare benefits a year, and doubtless decided—quite rationally, under the circumstances—that the money would go further, and that life would thus be more agreeable, in Goa than in her native Devon.

"Ainu" means "human." The Ainu people regard things useful to them or beyond their control as "kamuy"(gods). In daily life, they prayed to and performed various ceremonies for the gods. These gods include : "nature" gods, such as of fire, water, wind and thunder ; "animal" gods, such as of bears, foxes, spotted owls and gram-puses ; "plant" gods, such as of aconite, mush-room and mugwort ; "object" gods, such as of boats and pots ; and gods which protect houses, gods of mountains and gods of lakes. Is Kim Jong Il dead? Yes, North Korea's "Dear Leader" is no more, having passed away in the fall of 2003, writes Waseda University professor Toshimitsu Shigemura in Shukan Gendai (Aug 23-30).

A one-time Mainichi Shimbun journalist posted in Seoul, Shigemura is introduced by the magazine as a leading authority on the Korean Peninsula. His latest book, released this month, is titled "The True Character of Kim Jong Il."
If true, the implications are potentially vast. Among them: former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's summit partner during one or both of his landmark visits to Pyongyang in 2002 and 2004 was not Kim himself but a dummy—the stand-in Shigemura claims has been fooling the world for at least five years.
A dictator having one or multiple doubles is a familiar notion since Iraq's Saddam Hussein was shown to have deployed them. But Saddam was alive at the time. Kim, in Shigemura's scenario, was not manipulating a look-alike; he was replaced by one.
Of course it's fantastic—but in North Korea, says Shigemura, fantasy and reality are not mutually exclusive.

The lore of supernatural beings in Ireland is unlike that of the rest of Europe in one very important respect: spirit powers in the Emerald Isle have been endowed with names and personalities.

Ireland abounds with tales of the supernatural. And it would seem that every county has a story. Even our literature is strewn with ghosts. James Joyce recalls the black dog, with eyes like carriage lamps, that patrolled the stairs of the Jesuit College in Kildare which Joyce attended. Oscar Wilde wrote with understanding about the problems of being paranormal in the Canteville Ghost. Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu terrorized his readers with such frightful stories as The House by The Churchyard. Is there any truth to all these stories, or are they merely the products of over-active imaginations? We leave that up to our readers to decide...

The creepy joy of cooking with Vincent Price!  cookbook titled A Treasury of Great Recipes sounds innocuous. What's frightening about noodle casserole? Why, nothing ... except when it's cooked by Vincent Price.

For those who know Price from classic 1950s horror films like The Fly and The House of Wax—or who were imprinted with his Batman cameos and Saturday-morning commercials for Stay Alive and Hangman—it's odd to discover that he and his wife, Mary, were also gourmets. Thanks to tutorial LPs from the 1970s, you can still find clips of Vincent discoursing upon Viennese stuffed eggs floating about online; and the inevitable Youtube mashup assures that you'll never hear the words chunky peanut butter the same way again. But the Prices' culinary fame rests primarily upon their 1965 collection, A Treasury of Great Recipes, which culled recipes and reproduced menus from top restaurants around the world. Everyone who owns this volume swears by it for one reason above all others: The Treasury is a shockingly (terrifyingly?) good example of 1960s cuisine.

According to www.worldblues.com, "The new excitement generated by the band with guitar playing of Elvin Bishop and Mike Bloomfield created curiosity about the origins of their music. Word of mouth is one thing but BB King followed up with a hit, the Roy Hawkins song, The Thrill Is Gone, in 1969. The movie will be adapted from the DC Comics' Wildstorm comic book that centres on a spy whose fusion with an alien artifact makes him immune to pain.

Surfer Richard Crowe sends us word on the wildest Ian Fleming/ James Bond book ever:

The Bond Code is the remarkable story of how Fleming's association with the occult world led him to create a masterful series of clever clues, ciphers, and codes within his books. Philip Gardiner finally unravels the secret of James Bond piece by piece from the novels and films used to create his aura of mystique. This book introduces not just new material, but radically reappraises everything we thought we knew about James Bond--and his creator.

From the Back Cover
"Among the most enjoyable works on and around Bond is The Bond Code. It's a splendid piece...which asserts that the young Fleming plotted to create Bond 'as a great alchemical work to fulfill his own tumultuous and chaotic mind' while leaving 'a set of clues and codes for us to decipher.'"

The June leak of nine allegedly "mastered, finished" tracks from Guns N' Roses' long-delayed "Chinese Democracy" spurred a renewed round of speculation about whether the Axl Rose-led band will finally release the 14-years-in-the-making album.

But some concrete signs are finally emerging that the album's release could be imminent. That's because, according to sources, negotiations are under way for "Chinese Democracy" to come out as an exclusive at one of the big-box retailers -- either Wal-Mart or Best Buy.  http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSN1529368720080816

SPECIAL THEME: IAN FLEMING'S 100TH BIRTHDAY, JAMES BOND FOREVER, WHY WOMEN REALLY LIKE DANIEL CRAIG AS BOND ( HINT: SWIMSUIT PIC DIDN'T HURT!), THE JOHNNY CASH THUNDERBALL THEME!

To celebrate the centenary of Ian Fleming's birth, Times Online have created an exclusive 100 year interactive Fleming and Bond timeline. Packed with articles and photography from the Times Archive and the original reviews of Bond novels and films, it shows how closely Bond's fictional life paralleled Fleming's

The first woman to start the "women like Bond" fan base was Sci Fi Chick, with her article about why Daniel Craig was the best Bond ever. Frankly, she was right then and she is right now.
http://scifichick.com/2007/03/15/reasons-daniel-craig-is-the-best-bond-ever/

The trailer that started it all: DR. NO! Ska and reggae music, shot in Jamaica, AMAZING STILL!

Jonathan Ross is often called the UK version of David Letterman but this couldn't be more wrong. His documentaries on popular culture are the best ever made on the sunject of B films or Japanese pop culture. Unlike his U.S. counterparts, he does not interview people he doesn't care for or plug movies he doesn't like. The result is he wants to meet people he can have fun with. Here is his interview with Daniel Craig.

Sean Connery meets Miss France of 1958, and discusses his thoughts on the popularity of Bond. Though the film starts with a French narrator, he disappears fairly quickly.

Daniel Craig certainly has a big, ummmm, watch on his wrist!

There is absolutely no question that Daniel Craig has captured the largest female fandom of any actor to play James Bond. Here two girls with a huge crush on Daniel Craig gush. The modern version of a fan scrapbook! And actually kind of sweet. By the way ladies, if you didn't see CASINO ROYALE you missed a hell of a film!

 http://www.dedicatedtodaniel.com/

Here is the news story that first drew attention to Daniel's, um, how shall I put this, form in a swimsuit that helped draw one of the largest female audiences to a Bond film. The funny thing is, the Bond films lost thier way by trying to be politically correct. In one film, Bond had even turned down a beautiful woman to sleep with! I mean, come on! This film returned to the sadistic, imperialistic, sexist that was in the books. And women came out in droves!

Believe it or not, Johnny Cash did a Bond song! It wasn't used, but here a Bond/ Cash fan matches up the music with the opening. THUNDERBALL by Johnny Cash? I dig it!

Surf W/Cool Spots, Guilty Fun!

SPECIAL THEME: SECRET COOL SPOTS OF CHICAGO, MIKE'S GUILTY PLEASURES!

The Joynt has on Wednesday nights Shirley King, B.B. King's daughter, who holds sway with borderline "blue" or naughty humor, terrific singing ability, a smoking hot band and guests who pop in to play and sing. The night I was there Melody, who is known to jam with Kendall Lewis' Trio and other jazz artists around town popped up to sing the blues and the unrehearsed jam session that followed was the kind of music excitement this town rarely sees, but was once a staple of Chicago's jazz scene. Did I mention there is no cover on Wednesday night? SECRET COOL SPOT!

Yep, I know I am going to get heat for this, but it is my TV guilty pleasure so I have to fess up: I love GOSSIP GIRL!

Photo's like this are why the press has called GOSSIP GIRL "every parent's worse nightmare"!

Not a secret cool spot to rockabilly fans, The Big C Jamboree is a night of drinking, dancing, socializing, networking and non-stop music since 1991. For die hard rockabilly devotees and civilian music fans. Over the last decade, this highly organized vibrant jam session, held the first Thursday of every month at Martyrs', has become rockabilly central for many of the musicians & fans of Chicago's American roots scene. Although the monthly jam is devoted to rockabilly, the Big C Jamboree has also offered the span of '40's-'50's Amereicn roots music from Hillbilly Boogie to Western Swing, Jump Blues and 1st generation Rock-n-Roll. The night is run swiftly and simply: a host band performs a short set, followed by a myriad of roots musicians who do 3 songs each. The party like atmosphere includes socializing, drinking & dancing galore while the rotating line-up onstage usually features the raucous sounds of pompadoured rockabilly musicians wailing away on upright basses and hallow-bodied electric guitars; and there's NEVER a cover! http://www.myspace.com/bigcjamboree

Not so GUILTY PLEASURE,

MAVERICK was the coolest and most cynical western ever on TV. It still holds up. It's on at 3pm here in Chicago Monday thru Friday- Tivo it!  http://www.metvchicago.com/METV_MeToo_Schedule_627.pdf

I don't even remember anymore who took me to The Shamrock Club on Kinzie across from the Merchandise Mart the first time, but the person told me we should drink there before going to the House Of Blues. I couldn't imagine a cheap place to drink in the loop, but here it is! A cool secret spot!
http://www.yelp.com/biz/shamrock-club-chicago

The LaSalle Bank Movie Theater was such a cool place that when Bank Of America announced it was taking it over many worried the film choices would change. Happy to announce they are still really cool. With $5 admission, free parking, $2 popcorn and $1 soda this remains the best deal on a Saturday night. A cool secret spot! http://lasalle.filmteknik.com/

The Green Mill history is rich and pure Chicago. From Al Capone's favorite booth (facing the door, not the stage so he could see who was entering the bar) it is also the place where every Thursday Alan Gresik's Swing Shift Orchestra takes the stage with up to 20 musicians playing the hiots of the 30's and 40's. Many of the younger patrons show up with plenty of tattoos, vintage clothes, and they can dance! Admission? $6. One of the best entertainment deals in the city. A very cool spot!
http://www.greenmilljazz.com/phpBB2/calendar.php

You would never know it from the outside, but on Friday and Saturday nights The Liar's Club has a packed dance floor (after 10:30) and everyone is obviously having fun. A very cool secret spot!
The Liar's Club was the first bar in Chicago to play mashups, has an insane video collection, and is the home for my favorite bar band, THE BEER NUTS. Did I mentioon the upstairs bar is haunted?

BEST SITE OF THE DAY:

The L&L Tavern. I have met lovers, broken up with a few, had terrific fun at this bar. There was the time a stripper took me upstairs and banged my brains out, getting drunk on shots of Aqwa ( drink made from cocaine leaves!), drinking my first (but not last) Pabst Blue Ribbon in years- when no other bar in the city was carrying it!. For regulars, the L&L Tavern is a part of our life. A really cool secret spot.
Don't even try to outcool or pull attitude on the staff. You are outgunned!

Animated Chicago

One of the newest, and most unexpected, outlets for original animation nowadays appears be newspaper websites. For the past year or so, the NY Times has been commissioning beautiful animated pieces by animators like Jeff Scher and Gary Leib, and now the Chicago Tribune is getting into the act with a new politically-oriented series Animated Chicago by illustrator and animator Joe Fournier. I'm not sure if they're planning to do more of these, but the first episode can be viewed on the Tribune's website  http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/olympics/chi-fournier-htmlstory,0,6662255.htmlstory

Britney Spears is all set to turn herself into an aggressive lesbian stripper, but only in reel life. Renowned filmmaker Quentin Tarantino of Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill fame, has zeroed in on this defamed pop star to play the role of Varla, a mentally troubled striptease dancer in his remake of Faster Pussycat!Kill!Kill! that had hit the box offices way back in 1965.

The word Hell was introduced to China, my friend's parents told me, by Christian missionaries who claimed that non-converted Chinese folks were all "going to Hell" when they died -- and the Chinese, thinking "Hell" was the proper English term for the afterlife, adopted the word. Thus, Hell Bank Notes are simply Afterlife Monetary Offerings or Spirit Money.

Living in Chicago breeds a taste for crime that derives from one of the city's richest traditions. In what other place, after all, is Valentine's Day associated with a massacre? Every generation or so a maniac killer pops up within city limits: a college student who kills and dismembers a 6-year old girl; a free-lance wacko who murders eight Filipina nurses; a householder who slays boys and inters them in his bungalow's basement. Such acts of hideous violence relieve the tedium of city officials regularly caught with their hands up to their elbows in the public till.

But no crime has ever come close to stirring public interest in Chicago as did the 1924 murder of a 14-year-old boy named Bobby Franks by two students at the University of Chicago. The killers were 18-year-old Richard Loeb and 19-year-old Nathan Leopold Jr. The cold-bloodedness of their crime riveted the city and the nation.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121815198274522367.html?mod=2_1167_1

It's important to remember, in all that we'll discuss, that Bobby Franks never got to be twenty. He never got to be forty. He never got to vote for Nixon and maybe regret it. He never got to send sons to Vietnam. He never got to have patio cook-outs, or be scandalized by Jacqueline Suzanne, or see a man walk on the moon. You didn't read his obituary in 1998, noting over your morning coffee the curious incident of how he survived a bizarre 1924 kidnapping in Chicago and recounted the incident to a swelling number of grandchildren throughout his reasonably fulfilled life.

None of those things happened – nor the infinity of alternate things that could have happened in their place – because Bobby Franks died in 1924 before he was even fifteen years old. And it wasn't leukemia or a runaway truck that killed him – he died because he had the top of his head was pried open with a chisel, and when he cried out, he had a rag stuffed down his throat. And these things weren't done by some interrupted robber in the heat of the moment; they were coldly planned and carefully enacted by two other boys, wealthy Chicago teenagers  http://openlettersmonthly.com/issue/june08-getting-off/
