BB King reportedly found his break with mainstream white audiences through Mike Bloomfield's Butterfield Blues Band. According to www.worldblues.com, "The new excitement generated by the band with guitar playing of Elvin Bishop and Mike Bloomfield created curiosity about the origins of their music. Countless times the were asked, 'Where did you learn to play that way?' Both guitarists answered honestly, 'By copying BB's licks.' People looked at them blankly, 'BB who?' 'The real monster,' Bishop and Bloomfield would reply, 'BB King.'"

Word of mouth is one thing but BB King followed up with a hit, the Roy Hawkins song, The Thrill Is Gone, in 1969. As www.worldblues.com said: "With all his new triumphs, the most symbolic was his appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1971. Playing on the Sullivan show was a sign that a new performer had arrived with the American public." Here he is live for 2 performances at the Filmore East- and he and his band were smoking hot!

Surfer Richard Crowe sends us word on the wildest Ian Fleming/ James Bond book ever:
The Bond Code is the remarkable story of how Fleming's association with the occult world led him to create a masterful series of clever clues, ciphers, and codes within his books. Philip Gardiner finally unravels the secret of James Bond piece by piece from the novels and films used to create his aura of mystique. This book introduces not just new material, but radically reappraises everything we thought we knew about James Bond--and his creator.
From the Back Cover "Among the most enjoyable works on and around Bond is The Bond Code. It's a splendid piece...which asserts that the young Fleming plotted to create Bond 'as a great alchemical work to fulfill his own tumultuous and chaotic mind' while leaving 'a set of clues and codes for us to decipher.'"

There is absolutely no question that Daniel Craig has captured the largest female fandom of any actor to play James Bond. Here two girls with a huge crush on Daniel Craig gush. Surf W/Cool Spots, Guilty Fun!
SPECIAL THEME: SECRET COOL SPOTS OF CHICAGO, MIKE'S GUILTY PLEASURES!
The Joynt has on Wednesday nights Shirley King, B.B. King's daughter, who holds sway with borderline "blue" or naughty humor, terrific singing ability, a smoking hot band and guests who pop in to play and sing. The night I was there Melody, who is known to jam with Kendall Lewis' Trio and other jazz artists around town popped up to sing the blues and the unrehearsed jam session that followed was the kind of music excitement this town rarely sees, but was once a staple of Chicago's jazz scene. Did I mention there is no cover on Wednesday night? SECRET COOL SPOT!
Yep, I know I am going to get heat for this, but it is my TV guilty pleasure so I have to fess up: I love GOSSIP GIRL!
Photo's like this are why the press has called GOSSIP GIRL "every parent's worse nightmare"!
Not a secret cool spot to rockabilly fans, The Big C Jamboree is a night of drinking, dancing, socializing, networking and non-stop music since 1991. For die hard rockabilly devotees and civilian music fans. Over the last decade, this highly organized vibrant jam session, held the first Thursday of every month at Martyrs', has become rockabilly central for many of the musicians & fans of Chicago's American roots scene. Although the monthly jam is devoted to rockabilly, the Big C Jamboree has also offered the span of '40's-'50's Amereicn roots music from Hillbilly Boogie to Western Swing, Jump Blues and 1st generation Rock-n-Roll. The night is run swiftly and simply: a host band performs a short set, followed by a myriad of roots musicians who do 3 songs each. The party like atmosphere includes socializing, drinking & dancing galore while the rotating line-up onstage usually features the raucous sounds of pompadoured rockabilly musicians wailing away on upright basses and hallow-bodied electric guitars; and there's NEVER a cover! http://www.myspace.com/bigcjamboree
Not so GUILTY PLEASURE,
I don't even remember anymore who took me to The Shamrock Club on Kinzie across from the Merchandise Mart the first time, but the person told me we should drink there before going to the House Of Blues. The LaSalle Bank Movie Theater was such a cool place that when Bank Of America announced it was taking it over many worried the film choices would change. Happy to announce they are still really cool. With $5 admission, free parking, $2 popcorn and $1 soda this remains the best deal on a Saturday night. A cool secret spot! http://lasalle.filmteknik.com/
The Green Mill history is rich and pure Chicago. From Al Capone's favorite booth (facing the door, not the stage so he could see who was entering the bar) it is also the place where every Thursday Alan Gresik's Swing Shift Orchestra takes the stage with up to 20 musicians playing the hiots of the 30's and 40's. Many of the younger patrons show up with plenty of tattoos, vintage clothes, and they can dance! Admission? $6. One of the best entertainment deals in the city. A very cool spot!

You would never know it from the outside, but on Friday and Saturday nights The Liar's Club has a packed dance floor (after 10:30) and everyone is obviously having fun. A very cool secret spot!
The Liar's Club was the first bar in Chicago to play mashups, has an insane video collection, and is the home for my favorite bar band, THE BEER NUTS. Did I mentioon the upstairs bar is haunted?

For regulars, the L&L Tavern is a part of our life. A really cool secret spot.

One of the newest, and most unexpected, outlets for original animation nowadays appears be newspaper websites. For the past year or so, the NY Times has been commissioning beautiful animated pieces by animators like Jeff Scher and Gary Leib, and now the Chicago Tribune is getting into the act with a new politically-oriented series Animated Chicago by illustrator and animator Joe Fournier. I'm not sure if they're planning to do more of these, but the first episode can be viewed on the Tribune's website http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/olympics/chi-fournier-htmlstory,0,6662255.htmlstory
Britney Spears is all set to turn herself into an aggressive lesbian stripper, but only in reel life. Renowned filmmaker Quentin Tarantino of Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill fame, has zeroed in on this defamed pop star to play the role of Varla, a mentally troubled striptease dancer in his remake of Faster Pussycat!Kill!Kill! that had hit the box offices way back in 1965. http://www.celebguru.org/entry/britney-spears-grabs-the-role-of-a-violent-lesbian-stripper/

Living in Chicago breeds a taste for crime that derives from one of the city's richest traditions. In what other place, after all, is Valentine's Day associated with a massacre? Every generation or so a maniac killer pops up within city limits: a college student who kills and dismembers a 6-year old girl; a free-lance wacko who murders eight Filipina nurses; a householder who slays boys and inters them in his bungalow's basement. Such acts of hideous violence relieve the tedium of city officials regularly caught with their hands up to their elbows in the public till.

But no crime has ever come close to stirring public interest in Chicago as did the 1924 murder of a 14-year-old boy named Bobby Franks by two students at the University of Chicago. The killers were 18-year-old Richard Loeb and 19-year-old Nathan Leopold Jr. The cold-bloodedness of their crime riveted the city and the nation. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121815198274522367.html?mod=2_1167_1
It's important to remember, in all that we'll discuss, that Bobby Franks never got to be twenty. He never got to be forty. He never got to vote for Nixon and maybe regret it. He never got to send sons to Vietnam. He never got to have patio cook-outs, or be scandalized by Jacqueline Suzanne, or see a man walk on the moon. You didn't read his obituary in 1998, noting over your morning coffee the curious incident of how he survived a bizarre 1924 kidnapping in Chicago and recounted the incident to a swelling number of grandchildren throughout his reasonably fulfilled life.

None of those things happened – nor the infinity of alternate things that could have happened in their place – because Bobby Franks died in 1924 before he was even fifteen years old. And it wasn't leukemia or a runaway truck that killed him – he died because he had the top of his head was pried open with a chisel, and when he cried out, he had a rag stuffed down his throat. And these things weren't done by some interrupted robber in the heat of the moment; they were coldly planned and carefully enacted by two other boys, wealthy Chicago teenagers http://openlettersmonthly.com/issue/june08-getting-off/

Just months after his May 2007 election, French president Nicolas Sarkozy faced growing criticism over his stalled reforms, flashy style, and stormy divorce. The last straw should have been his whirlwind remarriage, to an Italian heiress, ex-model, and singer who had past liaisons with Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, among others, and nude photos all over the Internet. But the lady in question, Carla Bruni, is proving an unexpected asset. At the Élysée Palace, Maureen Orth encounters a pair of romantic predators who appear to have met their matches.
Since marrying French president Nicolas Sarkozy, in February 2008, former supermodel Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has toned down not only her husband’s image but also her own, stepping out in stylish but demure suits, slacks, and knee-length dresses. BEST SITE OF THE DAY:
For the past forty years and more, a fraud has been perpetrated on the Western world. Since at least the appearance of the first issue of Rolling Stone in 1967, it has been a common assumption that popular music, particularly rock and roll, is about social change. The story has become an Ur-text for any child growing up in America -- or England or the rest of the world for that matter. It is a pop culture creation myth: In the beginning the world was void, without sound, thought or feeling, when Elvis Presley descended, Prometheus-like, to bring eroticism, fun and rebellion to the dull gray world. And as the Church Fathers followed Jesus, others came to carry the message of social revolution forward: the Beatles, Rolling Stones, the Who, even the Grateful Dead.
The great fallacy at the center of this thesis is that the cultural explosion that occurred when rock began carried such a heady charge because it was about overturning societal norms. In fact, the music was reinforcing orthodoxies that are as old as mankind. Put simply, most rock and pop songs, from Chuck Berry through the Beatles and including the latest single from Coldplay or Justin Timberlake, are about love.
It is a claim that is demolished by John McWhorter in his new book All About the Beat: Why Hip Hop Can't Save Black America. McWhorter, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, is actually a fan of hip-hop music; thus his criticism of the form avoids the hysteria of some conservative condemnations of rap. He knows the music of Outcast, Ice Cube , Pete Rock and Public Enemy. The conclusion he draws is nuanced, but also blunt: Some hip-hop music is sonically clever and lyrically poetic. But none of it has anything to do with revolution.

Now, in a work that combines ingenious journalism and bizarrely encoded art, author/photographer/investigator Trevor Paglen uncovers seventy–five never–before–seen–in–public military patches that reveal a bizarre secret world of the American military. Paglen investigates classified weapons projects and intelligence operations by examining their own imagery and jargon, disclosing new facts about important classified military units—here known by peculiar names ("Goat Suckers," "None of Your F*cking Business," "Tastes Like Chicken") and illustrated with occult symbols and ridiculous cartoons. The precisely photographed patches—worn by military personnel working on classified missions, such as those at the legendary Area 51—reveal much about a strange and eerie world about which little was previously known.

The 28-year-old, who won a sliver medal in rowing at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, only took up cycling seriously in March 2006 after doctors recommended the sport to combat muscle fatigue she was experiencing.

Pint-size actress Mary-Kate Olsen has refused to be interviewed by federal investigators probing the accidental drug death of her close friend Heath Ledger unless she receives immunity from prosecution, The Post has learned.
The actress' lawyer has repeatedly rebuffed attempts by the feds to question Olsen, who was the first person called after her masseuse discovered Ledger's body in his SoHo apartment in January.

Aimee Anne Duffy is one hard girl to track down. A flurry of festival performances and a diary of ‘shoots, interviews and gigs’ means she’s hot property. As we start chatting she gives us a rundown of her über-hectic schedule, in the next breath reminding us she’s ‘just this kid from Wales who’s done a few songs’.
Yes, she’s still the same girl who grew up in a small Welsh seaside village with her twin sister Katy and older sister Kelly. But with a chart-topping album that’s sold millions, catapulting her to superstardom and earning her a Mojo Song Of The Year award, it’s clear Duffy is more than just some kid. http://www.mirror.co.uk/celebs/celebs-on-sunday/the-big-interview/2008/08/02/duffy-my-life-is-so-glam-now-but-it-means-nothing-to-me-115875-20680113/

Russian writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who exposed Stalin's prison system in his novels and spent 20 years in exile, has died near Moscow at the age of 89. The author of The Gulag Archipelago and One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich, who returned to Russia in 1994, died of either a stroke or heart failure. This is his story.
This is a very sad book, the story of thousands of Americans who, during the Depression, lured by sham Soviet propaganda and pro-Soviet falsehoods spread by the likes of George Bernard Shaw and the corrupt New York Times Moscow correspondent, Walter Duranty, migrated to the USSR in search of jobs and a role in the "building of socialism." It was, in the words of the author, "the least heralded migration in American history" and a period when "for the first time in her short history more people were leaving the United States than were arriving." Most of these expatriates, not intellectuals but simple working men, were quickly disenchanted and wanted to return home, only to find that Moscow considered them Soviet citizens and barred them from leaving. Ignored by the American government, many of them ended in the gulag.

Surfer Drewster from Evanston sends us this on the eve of the Olympics: Most people always believed the official line that Mao was the man who transformed China — a heroic leader, even if he did some bad things. The real Mao, we discover, did horrendous things.
"Mao was responsible for well over 70 million deaths of the Chinese in peacetime, and he was as evil as Hitler or Stalin — he did as much damage to mankind as Hitler and Stalin," said Jung Chang, co-author of "Mao, The Unknown Story." Jung wrote the book with her husband Jon Halliday and it has been described as a "bombshell of a book."
