The June leak of nine allegedly "mastered, finished" tracks from Guns N' Roses' long-delayed "Chinese Democracy" spurred a renewed round of speculation about whether the Axl Rose-led band will finally release the 14-years-in-the-making album.

But some concrete signs are finally emerging that the album's release could be imminent. That's because, according to sources, negotiations are under way for "Chinese Democracy" to come out as an exclusive at one of the big-box retailers -- either Wal-Mart or Best Buy.  http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSN1529368720080816

Surf W/Ian Fleming's 007

SPECIAL THEME: IAN FLEMING'S 100TH BIRTHDAY, JAMES BOND FOREVER, WHY WOMEN REALLY LIKE DANIEL CRAIG AS BOND ( HINT: SWIMSUIT PIC DIDN'T HURT!), THE JOHNNY CASH THUNDERBALL THEME!

To celebrate the centenary of Ian Fleming's birth, Times Online have created an exclusive 100 year interactive Fleming and Bond timeline. Packed with articles and photography from the Times Archive and the original reviews of Bond novels and films, it shows how closely Bond's fictional life paralleled Fleming's

The first woman to start the "women like Bond" fan base was Sci Fi Chick, with her article about why Daniel Craig was the best Bond ever. Frankly, she was right then and she is right now.
http://scifichick.com/2007/03/15/reasons-daniel-craig-is-the-best-bond-ever/

The trailer that started it all: DR. NO! Ska and reggae music, shot in Jamaica, AMAZING STILL!

Jonathan Ross is often called the UK version of David Letterman but this couldn't be more wrong. His documentaries on popular culture are the best ever made on the sunject of B films or Japanese pop culture. Unlike his U.S. counterparts, he does not interview people he doesn't care for or plug movies he doesn't like. The result is he wants to meet people he can have fun with. Here is his interview with Daniel Craig.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMUzN0ABW1c

Sean Connery meets Miss France of 1958, and discusses his thoughts on the popularity of Bond. Though the film starts with a French narrator, he disappears fairly quickly.

Daniel Craig certainly has a big, ummmm, watch on his wrist!

There is absolutely no question that Daniel Craig has captured the largest female fandom of any actor to play James Bond. Here two girls with a huge crush on Daniel Craig gush. The modern version of a fan scrapbook! And actually kind of sweet. By the way ladies, if you didn't see CASINO ROYALE you missed a hell of a film!

 http://www.dedicatedtodaniel.com/

Here is the news story that first drew attention to Daniel's, um, how shall I put this, form in a swimsuit that helped draw one of the largest female audiences to a Bond film. The funny thing is, the Bond films lost thier way by trying to be politically correct. In one film, Bond had even turned down a beautiful woman to sleep with! I mean, come on! This film returned to the sadistic, imperialistic, sexist that was in the books. And women came out in droves!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDfaUACzJWk

Believe it or not, Johnny Cash did a Bond song! It wasn't used, but here a Bond/ Cash fan matches up the music with the opening. THUNDERBALL by Johnny Cash? I dig it!

The gaming industry is just about dead even in the profit margin with the movie industry, but adults don't tend to notice. Take a look at this Bond game ad.

Surf W/Cool Spots, Guilty Fun!

SPECIAL THEME: SECRET COOL SPOTS OF CHICAGO, MIKE'S GUILTY PLEASURES!

The Joynt has on Wednesday nights Shirley King, B.B. King's daughter, who holds sway with borderline "blue" or naughty humor, terrific singing ability, a smoking hot band and guests who pop in to play and sing. The night I was there Melody, who is known to jam with Kendall Lewis' Trio and other jazz artists around town popped up to sing the blues and the unrehearsed jam session that followed was the kind of music excitement this town rarely sees, but was once a staple of Chicago's jazz scene. Did I mention there is no cover on Wednesday night? SECRET COOL SPOT!

Yep, I know I am going to get heat for this, but it is my TV guilty pleasure so I have to fess up: I love GOSSIP GIRL!

Photo's like this are why the press has called GOSSIP GIRL "every parent's worse nightmare"!

Not a secret cool spot to rockabilly fans, The Big C Jamboree is a night of drinking, dancing, socializing, networking and non-stop music since 1991. For die hard rockabilly devotees and civilian music fans. Over the last decade, this highly organized vibrant jam session, held the first Thursday of every month at Martyrs', has become rockabilly central for many of the musicians & fans of Chicago's American roots scene. Although the monthly jam is devoted to rockabilly, the Big C Jamboree has also offered the span of '40's-'50's Amereicn roots music from Hillbilly Boogie to Western Swing, Jump Blues and 1st generation Rock-n-Roll. The night is run swiftly and simply: a host band performs a short set, followed by a myriad of roots musicians who do 3 songs each. The party like atmosphere includes socializing, drinking & dancing galore while the rotating line-up onstage usually features the raucous sounds of pompadoured rockabilly musicians wailing away on upright basses and hallow-bodied electric guitars; and there's NEVER a cover! http://www.myspace.com/bigcjamboree

The cleanest dive bar in the city is GOLDIE'S. $1 pints of PBR, $4 pitchers! $3 well drinks! Pool table, great music jukebox. A secret cool spot!

Not so GUILTY PLEASURE,

MAVERICK was the coolest and most cynical western ever on TV. It still holds up. It's on at 3pm here in Chicago Monday thru Friday- Tivo it!  http://www.metvchicago.com/METV_MeToo_Schedule_627.pdf

I don't even remember anymore who took me to The Shamrock Club on Kinzie across from the Merchandise Mart the first time, but the person told me we should drink there before going to the House Of Blues. I couldn't imagine a cheap place to drink in the loop, but here it is! A cool secret spot!
http://www.yelp.com/biz/shamrock-club-chicago

The LaSalle Bank Movie Theater was such a cool place that when Bank Of America announced it was taking it over many worried the film choices would change. Happy to announce they are still really cool. With $5 admission, free parking, $2 popcorn and $1 soda this remains the best deal on a Saturday night. A cool secret spot! http://lasalle.filmteknik.com/

The Green Mill history is rich and pure Chicago. From Al Capone's favorite booth (facing the door, not the stage so he could see who was entering the bar) it is also the place where every Thursday Alan Gresik's Swing Shift Orchestra takes the stage with up to 20 musicians playing the hiots of the 30's and 40's. Many of the younger patrons show up with plenty of tattoos, vintage clothes, and they can dance! Admission? $6. One of the best entertainment deals in the city. A very cool spot!
http://www.greenmilljazz.com/phpBB2/calendar.php

You would never know it from the outside, but on Friday and Saturday nights The Liar's Club has a packed dance floor (after 10:30) and everyone is obviously having fun. A very cool secret spot!
The Liar's Club was the first bar in Chicago to play mashups, has an insane video collection, and is the home for my favorite bar band, THE BEER NUTS. Did I mentioon the upstairs bar is haunted?

BEST SITE OF THE DAY:

The L&L Tavern. I have met lovers, broken up with a few, had terrific fun at this bar. There was the time a stripper took me upstairs and banged my brains out, getting drunk on shots of Aqwa ( drink made from cocaine leaves!), drinking my first (but not last) Pabst Blue Ribbon in years- when no other bar in the city was carrying it!. For regulars, the L&L Tavern is a part of our life. A really cool secret spot.
Don't even try to outcool or pull attitude on the staff. You are outgunned!

Animated Chicago

One of the newest, and most unexpected, outlets for original animation nowadays appears be newspaper websites. For the past year or so, the NY Times has been commissioning beautiful animated pieces by animators like Jeff Scher and Gary Leib, and now the Chicago Tribune is getting into the act with a new politically-oriented series Animated Chicago by illustrator and animator Joe Fournier. I'm not sure if they're planning to do more of these, but the first episode can be viewed on the Tribune's website  http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/olympics/chi-fournier-htmlstory,0,6662255.htmlstory

Britney Spears is all set to turn herself into an aggressive lesbian stripper, but only in reel life. Renowned filmmaker Quentin Tarantino of Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill fame, has zeroed in on this defamed pop star to play the role of Varla, a mentally troubled striptease dancer in his remake of Faster Pussycat!Kill!Kill! that had hit the box offices way back in 1965.

The word Hell was introduced to China, my friend's parents told me, by Christian missionaries who claimed that non-converted Chinese folks were all "going to Hell" when they died -- and the Chinese, thinking "Hell" was the proper English term for the afterlife, adopted the word. Thus, Hell Bank Notes are simply Afterlife Monetary Offerings or Spirit Money.

Living in Chicago breeds a taste for crime that derives from one of the city's richest traditions. In what other place, after all, is Valentine's Day associated with a massacre? Every generation or so a maniac killer pops up within city limits: a college student who kills and dismembers a 6-year old girl; a free-lance wacko who murders eight Filipina nurses; a householder who slays boys and inters them in his bungalow's basement. Such acts of hideous violence relieve the tedium of city officials regularly caught with their hands up to their elbows in the public till.

But no crime has ever come close to stirring public interest in Chicago as did the 1924 murder of a 14-year-old boy named Bobby Franks by two students at the University of Chicago. The killers were 18-year-old Richard Loeb and 19-year-old Nathan Leopold Jr. The cold-bloodedness of their crime riveted the city and the nation.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121815198274522367.html?mod=2_1167_1

It's important to remember, in all that we'll discuss, that Bobby Franks never got to be twenty. He never got to be forty. He never got to vote for Nixon and maybe regret it. He never got to send sons to Vietnam. He never got to have patio cook-outs, or be scandalized by Jacqueline Suzanne, or see a man walk on the moon. You didn't read his obituary in 1998, noting over your morning coffee the curious incident of how he survived a bizarre 1924 kidnapping in Chicago and recounted the incident to a swelling number of grandchildren throughout his reasonably fulfilled life.

None of those things happened – nor the infinity of alternate things that could have happened in their place – because Bobby Franks died in 1924 before he was even fifteen years old. And it wasn't leukemia or a runaway truck that killed him – he died because he had the top of his head was pried open with a chisel, and when he cried out, he had a rag stuffed down his throat. And these things weren't done by some interrupted robber in the heat of the moment; they were coldly planned and carefully enacted by two other boys, wealthy Chicago teenagers  http://openlettersmonthly.com/issue/june08-getting-off/

Uh oh: Cheney: "Russian aggression must not go unanswered, and that its continuation would have serious consequences for its relations with the United States, as well as the broader international community."

Just months after his May 2007 election, French president Nicolas Sarkozy faced growing criticism over his stalled reforms, flashy style, and stormy divorce. The last straw should have been his whirlwind remarriage, to an Italian heiress, ex-model, and singer who had past liaisons with Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, among others, and nude photos all over the Internet. But the lady in question, Carla Bruni, is proving an unexpected asset. At the Élysée Palace, Maureen Orth encounters a pair of romantic predators who appear to have met their matches.

Since marrying French president Nicolas Sarkozy, in February 2008, former supermodel Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has toned down not only her husband’s image but also her own, stepping out in stylish but demure suits, slacks, and knee-length dresses. Lest we forget that at one time she was paid millions to wear provocative clothing, here is a look back at some of the more avant-garde—and revealing—outfits she modeled.

BEST SITE OF THE DAY:

For the past forty years and more, a fraud has been perpetrated on the Western world. Since at least the appearance of the first issue of Rolling Stone in 1967, it has been a common assumption that popular music, particularly rock and roll, is about social change. The story has become an Ur-text for any child growing up in America -- or England or the rest of the world for that matter. It is a pop culture creation myth: In the beginning the world was void, without sound, thought or feeling, when Elvis Presley descended, Prometheus-like, to bring eroticism, fun and rebellion to the dull gray world. And as the Church Fathers followed Jesus, others came to carry the message of social revolution forward: the Beatles, Rolling Stones, the Who, even the Grateful Dead.

The great fallacy at the center of this thesis is that the cultural explosion that occurred when rock began carried such a heady charge because it was about overturning societal norms. In fact, the music was reinforcing orthodoxies that are as old as mankind. Put simply, most rock and pop songs, from Chuck Berry through the Beatles and including the latest single from Coldplay or Justin Timberlake, are about love.

It is a claim that is demolished by John McWhorter in his new book All About the Beat: Why Hip Hop Can't Save Black America. McWhorter, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, is actually a fan of hip-hop music; thus his criticism of the form avoids the hysteria of some conservative condemnations of rap. He knows the music of Outcast, Ice Cube , Pete Rock and Public Enemy. The conclusion he draws is nuanced, but also blunt: Some hip-hop music is sonically clever and lyrically poetic. But none of it has anything to do with revolution.

Paglen investigates classified weapons projects and intelligence operations by examining their own imagery and jargon, disclosing new facts about important classified military units—here known by peculiar names ("Goat Suckers," "None of Your F*cking Business," "Tastes Like Chicken") and illustrated with occult symbols and ridiculous cartoons. The precisely photographed patches—worn by military personnel working on classified missions, such as those at the legendary Area 51—reveal much about a strange and eerie world about which little was previously known.

A stash of explicit pornography to which Franz Kafka subscribed has emerged for the first time after being studiously ignored by scholars anxious to preserve the iconic writer's saintly image.

Having stumbled by chance across copies in the British Library in London and the Bodleian in Oxford while doing unrelated research, James Hawes, the academic and Kafka expert, reveals some of this erotic material in Excavating Kafka, to be published this month. His book seeks to explode important myths surrounding the literary icon, a "quasi-saintly" image which hardly fits with the dark and shocking pictures contained in these banned journals.

Did the atomic bombs end the war with Japan? "Everyone" in America knows they did, so it is something of a shock to discover they didn't! Americans after the war had no idea Japan had been trying to surrender for months, but the Russians hid the information from us. So what group did end the war? Here's a hint, the pen is mightier than the sword!

Muscles taut and face locked in concentration, this is Rebecca Romero, who will be representing Britain in the Olympic games later this month.

With a carefully placed arm and thigh to protect her modesty, she appears to be in perfect physical condition ahead of what will be a gruelling race in Beijing.

The 28-year-old, who won a sliver medal in rowing at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, only took up cycling seriously in March 2006 after doctors recommended the sport to combat muscle fatigue she was experiencing.

Actor Morgan Freeman is reportedly in serious condition at a Memphis hospital. According to early press reports, Freeman's car was involved in an accident around 11:30 Sunday night, just north of Ruleville, Miss.

Pint-size actress Mary-Kate Olsen has refused to be interviewed by federal investigators probing the accidental drug death of her close friend Heath Ledger unless she receives immunity from prosecution, The Post has learned.

The actress' lawyer has repeatedly rebuffed attempts by the feds to question Olsen, who was the first person called after her masseuse discovered Ledger's body in his SoHo apartment in January.

As you can tell from the posts in the message box to the left, a lot of people really liked the Duffy video. Here she is singing MERCY:

Welsh singer Duffy, 24, talks about her new jetset lifestyle, her love of vintage handbags, and why a glass of Merlot is better than a man…

Aimee Anne Duffy is one hard girl to track down. A flurry of festival performances and a diary of ‘shoots, interviews and gigs’ means she’s hot property. As we start chatting she gives us a rundown of her über-hectic schedule, in the next breath reminding us she’s ‘just this kid from Wales who’s done a few songs’.

Yes, she’s still the same girl who grew up in a small Welsh seaside village with her twin sister Katy and older sister Kelly. But with a chart-topping album that’s sold millions, catapulting her to superstardom and earning her a Mojo Song Of The Year award, it’s clear Duffy is more than just some kid.

Russian writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who exposed Stalin's prison system in his novels and spent 20 years in exile, has died near Moscow at the age of 89. The author of The Gulag Archipelago and One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich, who returned to Russia in 1994, died of either a stroke or heart failure. This is his story.

This is a very sad book, the story of thousands of Americans who, during the Depression, lured by sham Soviet propaganda and pro-Soviet falsehoods spread by the likes of George Bernard Shaw and the corrupt New York Times Moscow correspondent, Walter Duranty, migrated to the USSR in search of jobs and a role in the "building of socialism." It was, in the words of the author, "the least heralded migration in American history" and a period when "for the first time in her short history more people were leaving the United States than were arriving." Most of these expatriates, not intellectuals but simple working men, were quickly disenchanted and wanted to return home, only to find that Moscow considered them Soviet citizens and barred them from leaving. Ignored by the American government, many of them ended in the gulag.

Surfer Drewster from Evanston sends us this on the eve of the Olympics: Most people always believed the official line that Mao was the man who transformed China — a heroic leader, even if he did some bad things. The real Mao, we discover, did horrendous things.

"Mao was responsible for well over 70 million deaths of the Chinese in peacetime, and he was as evil as Hitler or Stalin — he did as much damage to mankind as Hitler and Stalin," said Jung Chang, co-author of "Mao, The Unknown Story." Jung wrote the book with her husband Jon Halliday and it has been described as a "bombshell of a book." More links from Surfer Drewster follow in the same color.

Do you yearn for a good Cold War espionage story, one full of the cloak-and-dagger drama of treacherous cross-border operations? This book will cure that itch, for sure--and with a unique twist. Wolf's autobiography is the real-world story upon which so many spy novels are based

His face was unknown for over 30 years. He was believed to be the archetype spy in John Le Carre's novels. He brought down powerful men and their governments.

In the words of one ranking member of Israel's Mossad: "We wanted to target him, but he had unanimous respect within the services. It would have been like culling a golden eagle. Nobody was prepared to take that step. He was the master spy."    http://www.ladlass.com/intel/archives/011042.html

For nearly 30 years, Markus Wolf headed the international intelligence gathering arm (HVA) of East Germany's Ministry for State Security (MfS), or Stasi. Known to Western intelligence as "the man without a face" for his ability to avoid being photographed, Wolf developed one of the Cold War's most effective espionage operations. Under his direction from 1958 to 1987, HVA ran a network of about 4,000 agents outside East Germany, infiltrating NATO headquarters and the administration of West German Chancellor Willy Brandt. After German reunification Wolf was sentenced to six years in prison for espionage and treason. Later, however, the conviction was overturned, and he received a suspended sentence on lesser charges. Wolf was interviewed for COLD WAR in January 1998. The text has been translated from German.

Remember when Michael Caine was cast as Austin Powers' Dad in Goldmember? Here's where the inspiration came from. Back in 1965 Caine starred in The Ipcress File as Harry Palmer, the working-class answer to James Bond. It remains one of the best spy films ever made.

Security officials say that only al-Qaeda terrorism and Iranian nuclear proliferation are greater menaces to the country’s safety than Russia. There is reported to be deep irritation within the services that vital resources are having to be diverted to deal with industrial and military espionage by the Russians.

Klaus Fuchs, a refugee German physicist, and Communist Party member, was employed by the United Kingdom atomic energy program during World War II, and was sent to work on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos. Fuchs was a gifted physicist who made major contributions to the Manhattan Project in the theory of gaseous diffusion cascades, and in implosion theory.

He is also the famous "Atom Spy" who transferred to the Soviet Union, via Harry Gold and the Rosenbergs, virtually everything he knew about atomic weapons.

Who would've guessed that the best film of 2006 would be a 37-year-old thriller about the French Resistance during World War II? Hailed as a masterpiece by an overwhelming majority of reputable critics, Jean-Pierre Melville's Army of Shadows wasn't officially released in America until 2006 (hence its appearance on many of that year's top-ten lists), but its reputation as a French classic was already well-established throughout Europe. Fully restored in 2004 and released in the U.S. by Rialto Pictures, it represents the gold standard of films about the French Resistance, based upon Joseph Kessel's 1943 novel and imbued with personal touches by Melville, an Alsatian Jew whose own involvement in the Resistance qualifies Army of Shadows as a semi-autobiographical exercise in somber nostalgia, as indicated by an opening quote echoing Melville's ironic belief that memories of Nazi occupation needn't always be traumatic.

Having lived through this history, Melville doesn't treat it lightly

President Putin recently granted Koval a posthumous Hero of the Russian Federation award, the highest honorary title that can be given to a Russian citizen. Koval was born in Iowa, spoke fluent American English, and played baseball. But he was also recruited and trained by the GRU, Russia's largest intelligence agency."

"I thank you, for myself and for the army, for the immense service that you have rendered your country today." Thus wrote Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson to 18-year-old Belle Boyd in appreciation of information she brought him, braving enemy fire that put bullet holes in her skirt. The year before, Boyd had shot and killed a drunken Union soldier who was trying to raise the Stars and Stripes over her house in what was then Martinsburg, western Virginia. She was arrested and tried for murder, but was acquitted on a defense of justifiable homicide.

Dubbed "La Belle Rebelle" by a French war correspondent, Boyd continued to spy for the Confederacy and also served as a courier and scout for the Confederacy
