Now, in a work that combines ingenious journalism and bizarrely encoded art, author/photographer/investigator Trevor Paglen uncovers seventy–five never–before–seen–in–public military patches that reveal a bizarre secret world of the American military. Paglen investigates classified weapons projects and intelligence operations by examining their own imagery and jargon, disclosing new facts about important classified military units—here known by peculiar names ("Goat Suckers," "None of Your F*cking Business," "Tastes Like Chicken") and illustrated with occult symbols and ridiculous cartoons. The precisely photographed patches—worn by military personnel working on classified missions, such as those at the legendary Area 51—reveal much about a strange and eerie world about which little was previously known.

A stash of explicit pornography to which Franz Kafka subscribed has emerged for the first time after being studiously ignored by scholars anxious to preserve the iconic writer's saintly image.

Having stumbled by chance across copies in the British Library in London and the Bodleian in Oxford while doing unrelated research, James Hawes, the academic and Kafka expert, reveals some of this erotic material in Excavating Kafka, to be published this month. His book seeks to explode important myths surrounding the literary icon, a "quasi-saintly" image which hardly fits with the dark and shocking pictures contained in these banned journals.

Did the atomic bombs end the war with Japan? "Everyone" in America knows they did, so it is something of a shock to discover they didn't! Here's a hint, the pen is mightier than the sword!

THE HELLO KITTY FAN WHO WENT TOO FAR, THE HEAVY METAL MONK, MORE DUFFY, WILD CHILD FOUND IN FLORIDA, WATCH FOR THE LOCH NESS MONSTER, RIP Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Actor Morgan Freeman is reportedly in serious condition at a Memphis hospital. According to early press reports, Freeman's car was involved in an accident around 11:30 Sunday night, just north of Ruleville, Miss.

Pint-size actress Mary-Kate Olsen has refused to be interviewed by federal investigators probing the accidental drug death of her close friend Heath Ledger unless she receives immunity from prosecution, The Post has learned.

The actress' lawyer has repeatedly rebuffed attempts by the feds to question Olsen, who was the first person called after her masseuse discovered Ledger's body in his SoHo apartment in January.

As you can tell from the posts in the message box to the left, a lot of people really liked the Duffy video. Here she is singing MERCY:

Welsh singer Duffy, 24, talks about her new jetset lifestyle, her love of vintage handbags, and why a glass of Merlot is better than a man…

Aimee Anne Duffy is one hard girl to track down. A flurry of festival performances and a diary of ‘shoots, interviews and gigs’ means she’s hot property. As we start chatting she gives us a rundown of her über-hectic schedule, in the next breath reminding us she’s ‘just this kid from Wales who’s done a few songs’.

Yes, she’s still the same girl who grew up in a small Welsh seaside village with her twin sister Katy and older sister Kelly. But with a chart-topping album that’s sold millions, catapulting her to superstardom and earning her a Mojo Song Of The Year award, it’s clear Duffy is more than just some kid.

Russian writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who exposed Stalin's prison system in his novels and spent 20 years in exile, has died near Moscow at the age of 89. The author of The Gulag Archipelago and One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich, who returned to Russia in 1994, died of either a stroke or heart failure. This is his story.

This is a very sad book, the story of thousands of Americans who, during the Depression, lured by sham Soviet propaganda and pro-Soviet falsehoods spread by the likes of George Bernard Shaw and the corrupt New York Times Moscow correspondent, Walter Duranty, migrated to the USSR in search of jobs and a role in the "building of socialism." It was, in the words of the author, "the least heralded migration in American history" and a period when "for the first time in her short history more people were leaving the United States than were arriving." Most of these expatriates, not intellectuals but simple working men, were quickly disenchanted and wanted to return home, only to find that Moscow considered them Soviet citizens and barred them from leaving. Ignored by the American government, many of them ended in the gulag.

"Mao was responsible for well over 70 million deaths of the Chinese in peacetime, and he was as evil as Hitler or Stalin — he did as much damage to mankind as Hitler and Stalin," said Jung Chang, co-author of "Mao, The Unknown Story." "Three Days of the Condor" is a well-made thriller, tense and involving, and the scary thing, in these months after Watergate, is that it's all too believable. Conspiracies involving murder by federal agencies used to be found in obscure publications of the far left. Now they're glossy entertainments starring Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway. How soon we grow used to the most depressing possibilities about our government -- and how soon, too, we commercialize on them. Hollywood stars used to play cowboys and generals. Do you yearn for a good Cold War espionage story, one full of the cloak-and-dagger drama of treacherous cross-border operations? This book will cure that itch, for sure--and with a unique twist. Wolf's autobiography is the real-world story upon which so many spy novels are based

His face was unknown for over 30 years. He was believed to be the archetype spy in John Le Carre's novels. He brought down powerful men and their governments.

In the words of one ranking member of Israel's Mossad: "We wanted to target him, but he had unanimous respect within the services. It would have been like culling a golden eagle. Nobody was prepared to take that step. He was the master spy."    http://www.ladlass.com/intel/archives/011042.html

For nearly 30 years, Markus Wolf headed the international intelligence gathering arm (HVA) of East Germany's Ministry for State Security (MfS), or Stasi. Known to Western intelligence as "the man without a face" for his ability to avoid being photographed, Wolf developed one of the Cold War's most effective espionage operations. Under his direction from 1958 to 1987, HVA ran a network of about 4,000 agents outside East Germany, infiltrating NATO headquarters and the administration of West German Chancellor Willy Brandt. After German reunification Wolf was sentenced to six years in prison for espionage and treason. Later, however, the conviction was overturned, and he received a suspended sentence on lesser charges. Wolf was interviewed for COLD WAR in January 1998. The text has been translated from German.

The American public was never told, but when we fought in the Korean War our pilots often found themselves facing Soviet pilots- and were ordered to keep quiet about it! Here is a great site that even identifies many of the key pilots on both sides. In America, this story is still untold.

Remember when Michael Caine was cast as Austin Powers' Dad in Goldmember? Here's where the inspiration came from. Back in 1965 Caine starred in The Ipcress File as Harry Palmer, the working-class answer to James Bond. A new franchise for the spy-hard 60s was born, but none of the other Palmer pics (Funeral In Berlin and Billion Dollar Brain) was able to match this gritty tale of missing scientists, cryptic tapes and psychedelic brainwashing set in a grey, wet London. It remains one of the best spy films ever made.

Britain’s security services have identified Russia as the third most serious threat facing the country, it has emerged before Gordon Brown’s first meeting with President Medvedev.

Security officials say that only al-Qaeda terrorism and Iranian nuclear proliferation are greater menaces to the country’s safety than Russia. The services are understood to fear that Russia’s three main intelligence agencies have flooded the country with agents, The Times understands. There is reported to be deep irritation within the services that vital resources are having to be diverted to deal with industrial and military espionage by the Russians.

Klaus Fuchs, a refugee German physicist, and Communist Party member, was employed by the United Kingdom atomic energy program during World War II, and was sent to work on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos. Fuchs was a gifted physicist who made major contributions to the Manhattan Project in the theory of gaseous diffusion cascades, and in implosion theory.

He is also the famous "Atom Spy" who transferred to the Soviet Union, via Harry Gold and the Rosenbergs, virtually everything he knew about atomic weapons.

Who would've guessed that the best film of 2006 would be a 37-year-old thriller about the French Resistance during World War II? Hailed as a masterpiece by an overwhelming majority of reputable critics, Jean-Pierre Melville's Army of Shadows wasn't officially released in America until 2006 (hence its appearance on many of that year's top-ten lists), but its reputation as a French classic was already well-established throughout Europe. Fully restored in 2004 and released in the U.S. by Rialto Pictures, it represents the gold standard of films about the French Resistance, based upon Joseph Kessel's 1943 novel and imbued with personal touches by Melville, an Alsatian Jew whose own involvement in the Resistance qualifies Army of Shadows as a semi-autobiographical exercise in somber nostalgia, as indicated by an opening quote echoing Melville's ironic belief that memories of Nazi occupation needn't always be traumatic.

Having lived through this history, Melville doesn't treat it lightly

"The New York Times reports on the life of George Koval, codenamed Delmar, one of the most important spies to have infiltrated the Manhattan Project, the secret program that created the world's first nuclear weapon. President Putin recently granted Koval a posthumous Hero of the Russian Federation award, the highest honorary title that can be given to a Russian citizen. Koval was born in Iowa, spoke fluent American English, and played baseball. But he was also recruited and trained by the GRU, Russia's largest intelligence agency."

"I thank you, for myself and for the army, for the immense service that you have rendered your country today." Thus wrote Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson to 18-year-old Belle Boyd in appreciation of information she brought him, braving enemy fire that put bullet holes in her skirt. The year before, Boyd had shot and killed a drunken Union soldier who was trying to raise the Stars and Stripes over her house in what was then Martinsburg, western Virginia. She was arrested and tried for murder, but was acquitted on a defense of justifiable homicide.

Dubbed "La Belle Rebelle" by a French war correspondent, Boyd continued to spy for the Confederacy and also served as a courier and scout for the Confederacy

A new drug halts the devastating progress of Alzheimer's disease, say British scientists. It is said to be more than twice as effective as current treatments. A daily capsule of rember, as the drug is known, stops Alzheimer's disease progressing by as much as 81 per cent, according to trial results.

Patients with the brain disorder had no significant decline in their mental function over a 19-month period. 'We appear to be bringing the worst affected parts of the brain functionally back to life,' said Dr Claude Wischik

There is real hope that what’s happening in a Houston lab might lead to a cure for HIV.

“We have found an innovative way to kill the virus by finding this small region of HIV that is unchangeable,” Dr. Sudhir Paul of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston said.

Dr. Paul and Dr. Miguel Escobar aren’t talking about just suppressing HIV – they’re talking about destroying it permanently by arming the immune system with a new weapon lab tests have shown to be effective.

Every year TED invites esteemed academics, thinkers, doers, entrepreneurs, etc. to give an exclusive 15-18 minute long talk about what they do and why it is important for the rest of the world. I’ve shared one of these talks with you before, Zeresenay Alemseged’s.  In an effort to make Virgin Galactic the first private company to offer tours in space, British billionaire Richard Branson unveiled a mothership he hopes will carry SpaceShipTwo, a passenger spaceship. Still, there was no sign of the spaceship itself, in a project that has been mired by delays.

Branson, along with American aerospace designer Burt Rutan, displayed White Knight Two, renamed "Eve" after Branson's mother, at the Mojave Air and Space port in the desert near Los Angeles.

Autopsies usually point to a cause of death, but now a study of brain tissue collected during these procedures may explain an underlying cause of major depression and suicide, according to University of Western Ontario researcher.

This international study is the first to show that proteins that modify DNA directly are more highly expressed in the brains of people who commit suicide.

The project was, at the time, rather innovative: the idea was to explore the temple site of Prambanan, a 9th century CE complex near the city of Yogyakarta, in Central Java, from an archaeological, art historical, architectural and dance perspective and create a website which would allow a virtual exploration of the site from all these standpoints, simultaneously, relying on computer animation, QuickTime VR and all such new technologies – we are talking about eight to nine years ago, almost centuries in relation to the very fast pace at which technology develops!  http://traumwerk.stanford.edu/archaeolog/2008/07/recreating_a_lost_website_the.html

The reason I went to Comic Con was because the Hive Overmind (Discover Magazine) sponsored a panel discussion about the Science of Science Fiction, and invited me to be on it. They paid for my junket, which was very cool of them, and of course buys my loyalty for at least a week or two.

The panel was a lot of fun. They recorded it, and it’s now live:

The three largest genetic schizophrenia studies to date have uncovered several ways in which changes to the genome may increase the risk of developing the mental disorder.

The studies bring to light several common variations that increase the risk slightly, and rarer ones that raise it significantly, researchers say.

Medical physicists at the University of Virginia have created a novel way to kill tumor cells using nanoparticles and light. The technique, devised by Wensha Yang, an instructor in radiation oncology at the University of Virginia, and colleagues Ke Sheng, Paul W. Read, James M. Larner, and Brian P. Helmke, employs quantum dots. Quantum dots are semiconductor nanostructures, 25 billionths of a meter in diameter, which can confine electrons in three dimensions and emit light when exposed to ultraviolet radiation.

Based on data relayed back by the Huygens probe, part of the Cassini-Huygens mission carried out by NASA in collaboration with the European Space Agency, researchers from the University of Granada and the University of Valencia have proven for the first time that the dense atmosphere around Saturn's largest moon, Titan, is able to generate natural electrical activity. A British man accused of hacking into the computer systems of the U.S. military and NASA lost his appeal today against extradition to the U.S. where he will stand trial.

Gary McKinnon, 42, attempted to appeal his transfer to the U.S. to be tried for what has been called "the biggest military hack of all time" by taking his case to Britain's highest court, the House of Lords.

The House of Lords ruled the seriousness of the charges would carry a maximum life sentence

Hidden behind "Patch of Grass"

Researchers used X-rays from a particle accelerator to reconstruct the portrait of a woman Vincent van Gogh had painted over before composing his landscape "Patch of Grass," completed in 1887. Conventional X-rays used in previous analyses had produced only rough outlines of the portrait. The image, unveiled in a scientific journal published this week, bears a striking resemblance to a series of somber portraits the artist produced in the Dutch town of Nuenen, where he composed The Potato Eaters completed in 1885 and regarded as his first major work. The recent medical controversy over whether vaccinations cause autism reveals a habit of human cognition—thinking anecdotally comes naturally, whereas thinking scientifically does not. On the one side are scientists who have been unable to find any causal link between the symptoms of autism and the vaccine preservative thimerosal, which in the body breaks down into ethylmercury, the culprit du jour for autism's cause. On the other side are parents who noticed that shortly after having their children vaccinated autistic symptoms began to appear. These anecdotal associations are so powerful that they cause people to ignore contrary evidence: ethylmercury is expelled from the body quickly (unlike its chemical cousin methylmercury) and therefore cannot accumulate in the brain long enough to cause damage.  http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=how-anecdotal-evidence-can-undermine-scientific-results
