Who is this Baby Ruth, and what does she do? With this simple question, George Bernard Shaw drew the ire of Americans everywhere in the 1920s. A baseball legend and an American icon, Babe Ruth single-handedly changed the way baseball was played and rescued the game from the dark days that followed the Black Sox Scandal of 1919

Tracing the history of female crime and execution from 1726 to 1955, Women and the Noose presents the cases of more than 50 women who met their end on the hangman's gallows. From the criminal act to the execution day itself, these women's stories illustrate the range of crimes punishable by execution, such as petty theft and murder, as well as reactions to the death sentence, including the "pleading the belly" defense. Richard Clark also discusses the developments in execution methods, from burning at the stake to the short- and long-drop, as well as the move from very public hangings to more dignified private events. Clark's frank treatment of the executions combined with sympathetic revelations about the women's private lives makes for a chilling and surprisingly moving read. From Surfer Richard Crowe.

UFOs don't come from outer space. They come from "inner space" - another world inside our earth. That, at least, was the pioneering theory of Captain John Cleves Symmes, of Hamilton. The earth, he believed, was not a solid globe; it's made up of concentric spheres and polar voids. In other words, hollow - with large holes at the North and South Poles that would allow access to the inner earth. He also believed people were living there.
Captain Symmes wasn't just somebody's eccentric uncle who went around babbling about strange beliefs. He was a highly respected military officer who had been decorated for bravery during the War of 1812. In his time, he was a respected philosopher. So when he said the earth was hollow, many people listened to him. From Surfer Richard Crowe

Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong

"Frank Sinatra died ten years ago last week, an occasion that has been met with various Sinatra tributes, new CDs, DVD box sets, showings of his films on television and even the unveiling of a new stamp. Opinions on Sinatra are divided in the jazz world, but as the son of two 100% full-blown Italian-American parents, I can say that a love of Frank Sinatra was in my blood from birth. Sinatra was a great admirer of Pops and fortunately for music lovers everywhere, their paths crossed a couple of times over the years."

Includes very rare music of them together too!

The posters from the May '68 Paris student movement became immediate collectors' items. An explosion of creativity accompanied the rebellion of the students: new slogans ('Ce nest qu'un début'), new newspapers (l'Enragé), flyers and graffiti. Students from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts were the first to introduce completely democratic poster production. They occupied their own classrooms and renamed them 'Atelier Populaire' [Popular Studio].

"Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind." So said Albert Einstein, and his famous aphorism has been the source of endless debate between believers and non-believers wanting to claim the greatest scientist of the 20th century as their own.

A little known letter written by him, however, may help to settle the argument - or at least provoke further controversy about his views.

Due to be auctioned this week in London after being in a private collection for more than 50 years, the document leaves no doubt that the theoretical physicist was no supporter of religious beliefs, which he regarded as "childish superstitions".

A worldwide survey was conducted by the UN. The only question asked was:
"Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?"
The survey was a huge failure...
In Africa they didn't know what "food" meant.
In Eastern Europe they didn't know what "honest" meant.
In Western Europe they didn't know what "shortage" meant.
In China they didn't know what "opinion" meant.

"Oh and finally, sir, three Brazilian soldiers were killed in Iraq today."
Bush goes pale, his jaw hanging open in stunned disbelief. He buries his
face in his hands, muttering "My God...My God".
"Mr. President," says Gates, "we lose soldiers all the time, and it's
terrible. But I've never seen you so upset. What's the matter?"
Bush looks up and says..."How many is a Brazilian?"
Why God doesn't have a PhD....
He had only one major publication.
  It was in Hebrew.
  It had no references.
It wasn't published in a refereed journal.
Some even doubt he wrote it by himself.
It may be true that he created the world, but what has he done since then?
His cooperative efforts have been quite limited.
The scientific community has had a hard time replicating his results.
He never applied to the ethics board for permission to use human subjects.
When one experiment went awry he tried to cover it by drowning his subjects.
When subjects didn't behave as predicted, he deleted them from the sample.
He rarely came to class, just told students to read the book.
Some say he had his son teach the class.
He expelled his first two students for learning.
Although there were only 10 requirements, most of his students failed his tests.

His office hours were infrequent and usually held on a mountaintop.

A guy walks into a bar with his pet monkey. He orders a drink and while he's drinking, the monkey jumps all around the place. The monkey grabs some olives off the bar and eats them, then grabs some sliced limes and eats them, then jumps onto the pool table, grabs one of the billiard balls, sticks it in his mouth, and to everyone's amazement, somehow swallows it whole.
The bartender screams at the guy, "Did you see what your monkey just did?"
  The guy says "No, what?"
He just ate the cue ball off my pool table-whole!"
"Yeah, that doesn't surprise me," replied the guy, "he eats everything in sight, the little bastard. Sorry. I'll pay for the cue ball and stuff." He finishes his drink, pays his bill, pays for the stuff the monkey ate, then leaves.
Two weeks later he's in the bar again, and has his monkey with him. He orders a drink and the monkey starts running around the bar again. While the man is finishing his drink, the monkey finds a maraschino cherry on the bar. He grabs it, sticks it up his butt, pulls it out, and eats it. Then the monkey finds a peanut, and again sticks it up his butt, pulls it out, and eats it.
  The bartender is disgusted.
"Did you see what your monkey did now?" he asks.
  "No, what?"replies the guy.
"Well, he stuck a maraschino cherry and a peanut up his butt, pulled it out, and ate it!" said the bartender.
Yeah, that doesn't surprise me," replied the guy. "He still eats everything in sight, but ever since he had to poop out that cue ball, he measures everything first."

In their homeland they're known as In-Jan, and there's a monument to them near their birthplace, but few Thais these days know much about the conjoined brothers who became world famous a century and a half ago as Chang and Eng Bunker, the Siamese Twins.

It's such a remarkable story that it's worth retelling on any continent. They met the crowned heads of Europe, were gentlemen farmers in America and even owned African slaves, they chopped down trees wielding two axes at once, they amused Mark Twain and worried Herman Melville, they were very nearly recruited into the Confederate Army, they worked for PT Barnum but stood up for their rights, and together they somehow fostered 21 children.

The Pajama Game became the first in a string of smash hits for visionary choreographer Bob Fosse soon after it opened on Broadway in May of 1954. The play opened to rave reviews and was performed well over 1000 times. So when it came time to re-purpose it for the silver screen, Warner Bros. decided to basically lift the entire production from the stage at the St. James Theater and transport it to the sound stage in Hollywood. The female lead was changed from Janis Paige to Doris Day for box-office reasons and a couple of minor roles were switched out but, all-in-all what we see in the film is a faithful replication of the original Broadway production and a level of ensemble seldom seen on film. If you can stop being soooo sophisticated and are ready, willing and able to dispend reality for a little while, you will really enjoy this wonderful piece of period fluff.

May  17 Platinum Blonde
(1931) 16mm print JEAN HARLOW!!!!!! Platinum Blonde remains a fine example of an early screwball comedy about very different people trying to coexist with each under stressful situations with plenty of silly lines and good laughs on the side. The script is certainly not the best you'll ever find but the actors do a superlative job with what they are given. The direction by Frank Capra reflects forethought and the camera angles help dramatize scenes in the movie as the plot unfolds.

In the early 1960s a rumour circulated through China that one of its soldiers in Tibet had been brutally fed to vultures. Xinran was a little girl: the tale frightened and fascinated her. Thirty years later, she met a Chinese woman who could tell her the astonishing story that lay behind the legend. Her name was Shuwen and she had spent most of her adult life lost on the Tibetan plateau. . .

LikeTelevision™ proudly presents - The Woody Allen Special from September 21, 1969 - which was part of TV series called The Kraft Music Hall. (the guest for this episode was the 5th Dimension, featuring the Laura Nyro song Wedding Bell Blues with Marilyn McCoo in top form and Working on a Groovy Thing - AWESOME. Wedding Bell Blues was released in October 1969 shortly after this special and stayed in the Top 40 for 14 weeks). Candace Bergen, best known for her role as Murphy Brown is Woody's special guest. And - oh my - what a treat -
Reverend Billy Graham has a terrific interview with Woody Allen as they discuss God, sex and seeing each other's show. Billy says he'll go see Play it Again Sam if Woody goes to one of Billy Graham's revivals. It's an amazing bit of television history -and fascinatin given the events that followed the era of the sexual revoltion of the late 1960s.

Most Kyaraben are made by mothers, who want to make their children's lunches more appealing by arranging the contents of the Bento (lunch box) into their favorite cartoon characters or super heroes.

BEST SITES OF THE DAY:

I can't recall that there was ever a time when so many new Sinatra products were to be concurrently released. This coming Tuesday promises to be a bonanza for fans, with a stamp, new music and a mound of new DVD releases on tap.  Keeping track of everything can be bewildering. Here is a brief summary of everything that is to be released on that day:
Frank Sinatra Postage Stamp

The Stamp
Ten years after his death, The US Postal Service has finally seen fit to release a stamp commemorating the life and legacy of Frank Sinatra. The stamp will be available at your local post office or can be purchased online. (I don't know if this site accepts orders from outside the United States; this might be the best way for international fans to get this stamp.)

Nothing but the best CD

The Music
Nothing But The Best is a compilation CD that contains some of the best tracks from Sinatra's Reprise era. The highlight of the set for collectors is going to be the previously unreleased track, "Body and Soul". A special edition of this CD that includes the postage stamp and first-day cancellation will be available in limited quantities. These are bound to be a popular item.

The DVDS

Among the list of DVDs to be released are several box sets and numerous individual titles. Many of these titles have never before been available on DVD. The notable items include The Rat Pack Ultimate Collector's edition and the Sinatra mini-series (from '92). There are even a few titles that I thought might never make it to DVD, such as The Kissing Bandit. All of the titles contained in the box sets are also availably singly.

  • Sinatra (Mini-Series) - The 1992 Sinatra mini-series is finally released on DVD.

About a month ago I got a call from a reporter for the Arkansas Times inquiring about my research into paramilitary drug raids. He'd been reporting on a raid in North Little Rock involving a 40-year-old man named Tracy Ingle. When he told me the story over the phone, I was floored, even given all the abuses and mistakes I've reported and read about over the last few years. What makes the case especially egregious is not that the police may have gotten the wrong home, that they shot a man, or that they were covering it up or going silent. We've seen all that before. What's mind-blowing about this one is that they've continued abusing the poorTracy Ingle's door. guy, even after it should have been clear for some time now that they made a mistake.

"When it comes to LSD, I have to confess: I inhaled. But I inhaled like so many other denizens of the 1960s and early '70s, whether they actually took the drug or not. I inhaled because you couldn't fail to inhale. LSD — its aura if not its substance — was a component of the air we breathed. This hallucinogen infused the exhalations of musicians, philosophers, advertisers and activists." This is the story of how LSD changed our culture.

Crawdaddy Magazine, once a truly cool music magazine is back- and you can check it out on the net.

Remember those coin-operated "claw" games in the 80's, where you could snag some fuzzy dice if you moved the robot hand with enough skill?

Well the Japanese arcades have a weirder, more sophisticated version. Having long moved on from useless stuffed animal prizes, the clientèle are hungry for something more interesting and substantial… like a delicious live lobster!

Once upon a time critics assured their readers that Cyndi Lauper would be the hit maker that lasts and Madonna would be forgotten. Dance music acts rarely last past a hit or two, there was no reason to think any different. The hits however kept coming, the controversy, her legend. Madonna trascended the genre and re-invented it. Her ability to surprise and change actually makes her more an artist in the David Bowie camp than the Mick Jagger camp. There is simply no telling what she is going to do. Like last night when she kissed on of her backup sisters onstage. With pic!

BEST SITE OF THE DAY:

Cheeta the monkey in the Tarzan films has outlived all his co-stars, and he is writing a book. It will cover his experiments in modern abstract art, his battle with alcohol and cigars, his struggle with diabetes and, of course, that illustrious cinema career.

Cheeta was brought from the jungles of Liberia, West Africa, to the U.S. by Hollywood animal trainer Tony Gentry and appeared that year, 1932, alongside Weissmuller and O'Sullivan in Tarzan the Ape Man.

His antics entertained the audiences of a further 11 Tarzan movies - notably when he stole O'Sullivan's clothes as she swam naked in a river.

In the 1950s he worked with Bela Lugosi, and his swansong was Rex Harrison's Doctor Dolittle in 1967. This post from Surfer Richard Crowe!
