About a month ago I got a call from a reporter for the Arkansas Times inquiring about my research into paramilitary drug raids. He'd been reporting on a raid in North Little Rock involving a 40-year-old man named Tracy Ingle. When he told me the story over the phone, I was floored, even given all the abuses and mistakes I've reported and read about over the last few years. What makes the case especially egregious is not that the police may have gotten the wrong home, that they shot a man, or that they were covering it up or going silent. We've seen all that before. What's mind-blowing about this one is that they've continued abusing the poor guy, even after it should have been clear for some time now that they made a mistake.

Cheeta the monkey in the Tarzan films has outlived all his co-stars, and he is writing a book. It will cover his experiments in modern abstract art, his battle with alcohol and cigars, his struggle with diabetes and, of course, that illustrious cinema career.
Cheeta was brought from the jungles of Liberia, West Africa, to the U.S. by Hollywood animal trainer Tony Gentry and appeared that year, 1932, alongside Weissmuller and O'Sullivan in Tarzan the Ape Man.
His antics entertained the audiences of a further 11 Tarzan movies - notably when he stole O'Sullivan's clothes as she swam naked in a river.

The native religion of Shinto has had to give up a lot of mindshare to Buddhism, Christianity, new religions and cults, and of course modern consumerism. Albert Hofmann, the father of the mind-altering drug LSD whose medical discovery grew into a notorious "problem child," died Tuesday. He was 102.
Hofmann's hallucinogen inspired — and arguably corrupted — millions in the 1960's hippy generation. For decades after LSD was banned in the late 1960s, Hofmann defended his invention. I have a hard time telling such people the killer statistic: Among high-school students who graduated in the bottom 40 percent of their classes, and whose first institutions were four-year colleges, two-thirds had not earned diplomas eight and a half years later. That figure is from a study cited by Clifford Adelman, a former research analyst at the U.S. Department of Education and now a senior research associate at the Institute for Higher Education Policy. Yet four-year colleges admit and take money from hundreds of thousands of such students each year!
Even worse, most of those college dropouts leave the campus having learned little of value, and with a mountain of debt and devastated self-esteem from their unsuccessful struggles. Perhaps worst of all, even those who do manage to graduate too rarely end up in careers that require a college education. So it's not surprising that when you hop into a cab or walk into a restaurant, you're likely to meet workers who spent years and their family's life savings on college, only to end up with a job they could have done as a high-school dropout.

The Dutch cabinet has proposed a ban on the sale of all hallucinogenic "magic" mushrooms because they could induce life-threatening behaviour.

The Hell Fire Club! The club motto was Fait ce que vouldras (Do what thou wilt) from François Rabelais, later used by Aleister Crowley. According to Horace Walpole, the members' "practice was rigorously pagan: Bacchus and Venus were the deities to whom they almost publicly sacrificed; and the nymphs and the hogsheads that were laid in against the festivals of this new church, sufficiently informed the neighbourhood of the complexion of those hermits." University of Minnesota college student Chris Jenkins was found in the Mississippi River in February of 2003. Minneapolis Police began investigating the case, which also caught the attention of two retired NYPD detectives. Turns out, Jenkins' death was the missing part of the puzzle for Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte. They think Jenkins connects dozens of other deaths around the country over the last decade. The stories are the same all over the country--an athletic, intelligent, well-liked college student goes missing. Because of extensive investigation by Duarte and Gannon, Jan Jenkins now says she knows exactly what happened to her son on the night he disappeared, Oct. 31, 2002. "Chris was abducted in a cargo van," she said. "He was driven around Minneapolis for hours and tortured. He was taken down to the Mississippi River and he was murdered. And after that, his body was positioned and taken to a different spot and then to a different point in the Mississippi River." Gannon and Duarte say they've discovered a link between Jenkins' death and the drownings of at least 40 other men in 25 cities in 11 different states.
These detectives believe there are multiple organized murder rings or clubs across the country that are in contact with each other in some way, a serial killer ring if you will. ......  Bram Stoker best known for Dracula, was the author of several other novels including this, his last novel. The Lair of the White Worm is also Stoker's strangest novel. Written as the author was dying, and possibly loosing his mind, it is an interpretation of the legend of the Lambton Worm, a giant snake-like monster sometimes considered a flightless dragon.

This week, Lucy Liu hits Tribeca with two films: a vampire flick called Rise and the oddball romance Watching the Detectives. In Detectives, directed by Broken Lizard comic Paul Soter, Liu plays a nutjob sweetheart who both seduces and tortures a lonely video-store clerk (Cillian Murphy) by playing out outrageous pranks that begin to turn his boring life into something more comically cinematic. Human beings may have had a brush with extinction 70,000 years ago, an extensive genetic study suggests. The human population at that time was reduced to small isolated groups in Africa, apparently because of drought, according to an analysis released Thursday.

The Wow moment in this talk in the realization that we may all be less bound to physical addresses. How do we identify ourselves then: Instead of saying we are from Britain will we say we are British Telecom users? Or we are Nokia-ers? Will more of our identity be caught up in our phones rather than where we sleep most nights?

I am glad to see the idea that cost should not be a determinant of health care provided to the individual. The next advancement I want to work on is: How do we tie all of these current hot topics into a health facility:
+ environmentally friendly -- green roof, solar panels, wind generated power, smart design... etc.
+ conservation of water -- re-using grey water, minimizing waste
+ promoting health -- athletic/wellness facilities for staff, clients and the community
+ good food -- local, organic, free-range etc.

I am a granddaughter of Eiji Tsuburaya, who was in charge of the special effects in Godzilla. It was fascinating to see your article about the film by Peter Bradshaw (A monster of a movie, April 18). It was a good occasion for me to think again of the theme behind Godzilla at my age of 35. In the wandering period after the fatal defeat in the war, what did Japanese people see in Godzilla? And what did my grandfather want to say?
In England newspapers have given away CD's, movies- and recently The Guardian gave away free copies of the original GODZILLA
- and sales for the paper went through the roof! Here is why Godzilla still rules:
