Poison has been as integral to fugu, the funny-looking, potentially deadly puffer fish prized by Japanese gourmands, as the savor of its pricey meat. So consider fugu, but poison-free.

Thanks to advances in fugu research and farming, Japanese fish farmers are now mass-producing fugu as harmless as goldfish. Most important, they have taken the poison out of fugu's liver, considered both its most delicious and potentially most lethal part, one whose consumption has left countless Japanese dead over the centuries and whose sale remains illegal in the country.

But what could be seen as potential good news for gourmands has instead been grounds for controversy: powerful interests in the fugu industry, playing on lingering safety fears, are fighting to keep the ban on fugu livers even from poison-free fish.

In his review in the New York Times, Bosley Crowther observed, "The ultimate credit for as taut and insinuating a melodrama as has come along this year — a film which extenuates tension like a grim inquisitor's rack—must be given to Mr. Wyler. His hand is patent throughout . . . Miss Davis is a strangely cool and calculating killer who conducts herself with reserve and yet implies a deep confusion of emotions."

Surfer Richard Crowe sends us this amazing piece on superstitions of Japan:
The Japan of anime and manga, high-tech and high-speed trains may not seem like a superstitious place. But under the skin, Japan's is an ancient and originally animist or pagan culture, in that sense much like my own country of Ireland. The native religion of Shinto has had to give up a lot of mindshare to Buddhism, Christianity, new religions and cults, and of course modern consumerism. But it retains its strong but subtle hold on the national psyche.

If you had any doubt that no place was safe from the claws of Hello Kitty, that doubt may now be put to rest. But alas, I have once again underestimated the power that the evil feline possesses

THE FOUNDER OF LSD HAS DIED

News of the founder of LSD's death first came in from the Mysterious
 Surfer Mr Z........
Albert Hofmann, the father of the mind-altering drug LSD whose medical discovery grew into a notorious "problem child," died Tuesday. He was 102.

Hofmann's hallucinogen inspired — and arguably corrupted — millions in the 1960's hippy generation. For decades after LSD was banned in the late 1960s, Hofmann defended his invention. "I produced the substance as a medicine ... It's not my fault if people abused it," he once said. http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/04/30/america/NA-GEN-US-Obit-Hofmann.php

Cronenberg says, "Andy was making underground films when I was making underground films. And I was more inspired by him than by Hollywood. He created himself: He was an outsider, a Slovakian, Catholic, gay, an artist, poor; an outsider in his own family, a triple outsider like Kafka, with his nose pressed against the New York window. And, he became the ultimate insider, the center of his own world, and drew people to him. He became a huge example of the invention of an identity." I have a hard time telling such people the killer statistic: Among high-school students who graduated in the bottom 40 percent of their classes, and whose first institutions were four-year colleges, two-thirds had not earned diplomas eight and a half years later. That figure is from a study cited by Clifford Adelman, a former research analyst at the U.S. Department of Education and now a senior research associate at the Institute for Higher Education Policy. Yet four-year colleges admit and take money from hundreds of thousands of such students each year!

Even worse, most of those college dropouts leave the campus having learned little of value, and with a mountain of debt and devastated self-esteem from their unsuccessful struggles. Perhaps worst of all, even those who do manage to graduate too rarely end up in careers that require a college education. So it's not surprising that when you hop into a cab or walk into a restaurant, you're likely to meet workers who spent years and their family's life savings on college, only to end up with a job they could have done as a high-school dropout.

Such students are not aberrations. Today, amazingly, a majority of the students whom colleges admit are grossly underprepared

In recent years the Netherlands has looked to shed its "anything goes" image and has tightened laws on drug use and prostitution. The Hell Fire Club was the legendary public sex club years ago. Now it's a travel destination, and you can bring the kids! From Surfer Richard Crowe! Read more about the original club next link!  http://www.hellfirecaves.co.uk/

The Hell Fire Club! The club motto was Fait ce que vouldras (Do what thou wilt) from François Rabelais, later used by Aleister Crowley. According to Horace Walpole, the members' "practice was rigorously pagan: Bacchus and Venus were the deities to whom they almost publicly sacrificed; and the nymphs and the hogsheads that were laid in against the festivals of this new church, sufficiently informed the neighbourhood of the complexion of those hermits." However, these activities were, according to Noblitt and Perskin, to cover the real reason for the club's existence - sexual activities. Many of the Hell Fire Clubs were allegedy created to provide male members with opportunities for "sexual debauchery" [11]. Female "guests" (a euphemism for prostitutes) were referred to as "Nuns".

University of Minnesota college student Chris Jenkins was found in the Mississippi River in February of 2003. Minneapolis Police began investigating the case, which also caught the attention of two retired NYPD detectives. Turns out, Jenkins' death was the missing part of the puzzle for Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte. They think Jenkins connects dozens of other deaths around the country over the last decade. The stories are the same all over the country--an athletic, intelligent, well-liked college student goes missing. Because of extensive investigation by Duarte and Gannon, Jan Jenkins now says she knows exactly what happened to her son on the night he disappeared, Oct. 31, 2002. "Chris was abducted in a cargo van," she said. "He was driven around Minneapolis for hours and tortured. He was taken down to the Mississippi River and he was murdered. And after that, his body was positioned and taken to a different spot and then to a different point in the Mississippi River." Gannon and Duarte say they've discovered a link between Jenkins' death and the drownings of at least 40 other men in 25 cities in 11 different states.

These detectives believe there are multiple organized murder rings or clubs across the country that are in contact with each other in some way, a serial killer ring if you will. ...... Watch all the video pieces...This is deeply disturbing.

Lurking in the fog a fearsome brood
Poor traveling folk they caught and slew
No graves have the victims of these ghouls and fiends
Those taken and eaten by—the Sawney Bean

From their flesh they made a meal
Their skin the floor for their bairns to kneel
Their skulls a table from which to feed
Alas the victims of—the Sawney Bean

They lived by the sword, were felled by the axe
And I say "nothing wrong with that"
But in their hellish caves worse than any dream
Cursed with the stench of—the Sawney Bean

Bram Stoker best known for Dracula, was the author of several other novels including this, his last novel. The Lair of the White Worm is also Stoker's strangest novel. Written as the author was dying, and possibly loosing his mind, it is an interpretation of the legend of the Lambton Worm, a giant snake-like monster sometimes considered a flightless dragon.

This week, Lucy Liu hits Tribeca with two films: a vampire flick called Rise and the oddball romance Watching the Detectives. In Detectives, directed by Broken Lizard comic Paul Soter, Liu plays a nutjob sweetheart who both seduces and tortures a lonely video-store clerk (Cillian Murphy) by playing out outrageous pranks that begin to turn his boring life into something more comically cinematic. Liu talked to Logan Hill about why her comedy's a little like S&M — and why she won't be surprised if she sees her vampire movie screening at Show World. Human beings may have had a brush with extinction 70,000 years ago, an extensive genetic study suggests. The human population at that time was reduced to small isolated groups in Africa, apparently because of drought, according to an analysis released Thursday.

The report notes that a separate study by researchers at Stanford University estimated the number of early humans may have shrunk as low as 2,000 before numbers began to expand again in the early Stone Age.

    BEST SITE OF THE DAY:

This week on TED.com, novelist Amy Tan takes the TED audience on a funny, thoughtful walk through her head, in search of the germs of creativity. Watch this master storyteller tell her own story -- she sets fire to the TED Commandments in the first minute, and rolls from there. Also look for Brian Greene, a master storyteller in his own right, as he explains string theory to you (really!). And check out a talk from last week that is packed with insight and inspiration: Dr. Ernest Madu, talking about the creative tactics he uses to bring good health care to poor communities in Jamaica.

Dr. Dean Ornish: Your genes are not your fate
At TED2008, Dr. Dean Ornish shares new research that shows how healthy lifestyle habits can affect a person at a genetic level. For instance, he says, when you eat better, exercise, and love more, your brain cells actually increase. And new findings show that a healthier lifestyle can actually turn off disease-provoking genes and turn on the good ones. Watch this talk >>

Brian Greene: The universe on a string
In clear, nontechnical language, string theorist Brian Greene explains how our understanding of the universe has evolved from Einstein's notions of gravity and space-time to superstring theory, where minuscule strands of energy vibrating in 11 dimensions create every particle and force in the universe. (This mind-bending theory may soon be put to the test at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva.) Fun fact: Greene is the co-founder of this month's World Science Festival. Watch this talk >>

Amy Tan: Where does creativity hide?
Novelist Amy Tan digs deep into the creative process, journeying through her childhood and family history and into the worlds of physics and chance, looking for hints of where her own creativity comes from. It's a wild ride with a surprise ending. Watch this talk >>

Dr. Ernest Madu: Creative ways to bring health care to the poorest
Dr. Ernest Madu runs the Heart Institute of the Caribbean in Jamaica, where he proves that -- with smart design and creative technical choices -- it's possible to offer world-class health care in the developing world. And it takes nothing more than re-imagining the hospital. Watch this talk >>

Jon Fairaizl on Jan Chipchase's Our cell phones, ourselves:
As an international traveler. I am that person whose phone number is their address. I am that person that isn't bound to a physical address, but rather bound to a means of contact. The Wow moment in this talk in the realization that we may all be less bound to physical addresses. How do we identify ourselves then: Instead of saying we are from Britain will we say we are British Telecom users? Or we are Nokia-ers? Will more of our identity be caught up in our phones rather than where we sleep most nights?

Robert Fraser on Dr. Ernest Madu's Creative ways to bring health care to the poorest:
I am glad to see the idea that cost should not be a determinant of health care provided to the individual. The next advancement I want to work on is: How do we tie all of these current hot topics into a health facility:
+ environmentally friendly -- green roof, solar panels, wind generated power, smart design... etc.
+ conservation of water -- re-using grey water, minimizing waste
+ promoting health -- athletic/wellness facilities for staff, clients and the community
+ good food -- local, organic, free-range etc.

The world will be watching on PANGEA DAY, May 10

Recommended: Check out the videos of the Anthem project on pangeaday.org. It's such a simple idea -- singers from one country perform the national anthem of another. But the results are surprisingly, powerfully moving. As Prashant K comments on the TED Blog: "Absolutely brilliant. To begin with, my children had a curious look on their faces ... and that turned to genuine happiness ... and obvious questions. It is a step in what Pangea Day wants to achieve, of bringing the world together (through film)."

In two weeks, Pangea Day, a first-of-its-kind global event, will be bringing the world together through the power of films made by the world for the world. On May 10, 2008, at 6:00 PM GMT, millions of people from all over the world will come together to share a program of short films, talks and music, broadcast on TV, the web and mobile phones around the world.

I am a granddaughter of Eiji Tsuburaya, who was in charge of the special effects in Godzilla. It was fascinating to see your article about the film by Peter Bradshaw (A monster of a movie, April 18). It was a good occasion for me to think again of the theme behind Godzilla at my age of 35. In the wandering period after the fatal defeat in the war, what did Japanese people see in Godzilla? And what did my grandfather want to say?

Carl Hammer Gallery proudly welcomes the genius of Chris Ware back for another luminous solo appearance. This newest body of original work comes mainly from his two most recent publications The Acme Novelty Library #17 and #18. While most of the superlatives about the uncanny mastery Ware demonstrates in his story-telling art have already been said, new insights re his unique personal perspective on life culls a never-ending stream of new interpretation and understanding. He is the widely acknowledged giant within this burgeoning genre. Ware's brilliance rests on his development of a language of simple graphics focusing on timelessly simple life experiences, transforming them into profound and understandable declarations concerning the human condition.

(1947) classic noir: Bosley Crowther, film critic for The New York Times in 1947, liked the film and especially Robert Montgomery's direction, and wrote, "...Mr. Montgomery, as director and star of this story, has contrived to make it look shockingly literal and keep it moving at an unrelenting pace. And he has also managed to lace it with grisly action and rugged sentiment without deceit. Indeed, he has artfully fashioned a fascinating film within the genre. He has done something else exceptional; he has given the other actors a real chance." Crowther also praised the work of Fred Clark and Wanda Hendrix

She was in the midst of completing her degree at the International Center of Photography for Documentary Photography and Photojournalism. For the next two and a half years Dimmock settled in as a long-term observer to candidly record the consumptive and consumed lives of nearly thirty heroin addicts in their eroding, claustrophobic home

Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil in Rosedale, Mississippi

    robert.johnson.capo.jpg

Last month, while I was driving down the Mississippi River on a magazine assignment, I had a curious experience in Rosedale, Mississippi. As I was eating lunch in a place called Leo's Market, a waitress mentioned that Rosedale is the place where the legendary bluesman Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil in exchange for musical genius (an event alluded to in -- among other places -- the Cohen brothers' movie Oh Brother, Where Art Thou). As if to prove it, the waitress handed me a wrinkled, typewritten transcription of a "vision" about Johnson's fateful moment that had appeared to bluesman Henry Goodman as he was traveling the road from Rosedale to Anguila. For the sake of posterity (and because I have never seen it elsewhere), I am publishing Goodman's "vision" in full below, as well as a postscript by Rosedale's Crossroads Blues Society.
