I am a granddaughter of Eiji Tsuburaya, who was in charge of the special effects in Godzilla. It was fascinating to see your article about the film by Peter Bradshaw (A monster of a movie, April 18). It was a good occasion for me to think again of the theme behind Godzilla at my age of 35. In the wandering period after the fatal defeat in the war, what did Japanese people see in Godzilla? And what did my grandfather want to say?

In England newspapers have given away CD's, movies- and recently The Guardian gave away free copies of the original GODZILLA
- and sales for the paper went through the roof! Here is why Godzilla still rules:

NOT YOUR PARENTS GODZILLA: It has since become a popular piece of Hollywood schlock, but the original Japanese film is a powerful meditation on war and the price of peace. GODZILLA!

Hideki Matsui, the famously cool under pressure slugger for the New York Yankees, says he cried at his wedding and that it was love at first sight on meeting his future wife. Matsui, called "Godzilla" by his fans, called the press conference a day after he tied the knot at a New York church in a quiet ceremony attended only by relatives.

What are the monsters in your life, and how do you defeat them?

That's the question dozens of scholars tried to answer Sunday during the ninth annual Newman University Literary Festival, "Godzilla Fest '08: Returning from Ruin: Living in the Aftermath."

More than 100 people attended the two-day event. Participants, including students and professionals, read analytical papers, stories and poems about conquering personal or professional obstacles.

Carl Hammer Gallery proudly welcomes the genius of Chris Ware back for another luminous solo appearance. This newest body of original work comes mainly from his two most recent publications The Acme Novelty Library #17 and #18. While most of the superlatives about the uncanny mastery Ware demonstrates in his story-telling art have already been said, new insights re his unique personal perspective on life culls a never-ending stream of new interpretation and understanding. He is the widely acknowledged giant within this burgeoning genre. Ware's brilliance rests on his development of a language of simple graphics focusing on timelessly simple life experiences, transforming them into profound and understandable declarations concerning the human condition.

(1947) classic noir: Bosley Crowther, film critic for The New York Times in 1947, liked the film and especially Robert Montgomery's direction, and wrote, "...Mr. Montgomery, as director and star of this story, has contrived to make it look shockingly literal and keep it moving at an unrelenting pace. And he has also managed to lace it with grisly action and rugged sentiment without deceit. Indeed, he has artfully fashioned a fascinating film within the genre. He has done something else exceptional; he has given the other actors a real chance." Crowther also praised the work of Fred Clark and Wanda Hendrix

Jessica Dimmock began photographing her series 'The Ninth Floor' after being approached by a New York City drug dealer several years ago. She was in the midst of completing her degree at the International Center of Photography for Documentary Photography and Photojournalism. She became interested in photographing the dealer and his daily deliveries. One such stop was the ninth-floor of an elegant apartment building in New York's Flatiron district. For the next two and a half years Dimmock settled in as a long-term observer to candidly record the consumptive and consumed lives of nearly thirty heroin addicts in their eroding, claustrophobic home

Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil in Rosedale, Mississippi

robert.johnson.capo.jpg

Last month, while I was driving down the Mississippi River on a magazine assignment, I had a curious experience in Rosedale, Mississippi. As I was eating lunch in a place called Leo's Market, a waitress mentioned that Rosedale is the place where the legendary bluesman Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil in exchange for musical genius (an event alluded to in -- among other places -- the Cohen brothers' movie Oh Brother, Where Art Thou). As if to prove it, the waitress handed me a wrinkled, typewritten transcription of a "vision" about Johnson's fateful moment that had appeared to bluesman Henry Goodman as he was traveling the road from Rosedale to Anguila. For the sake of posterity (and because I have never seen it elsewhere), I am publishing Goodman's "vision" in full below, as well as a postscript by Rosedale's Crossroads Blues Society. Hollywood Chinese is a captivating revelation on a little-known chapter of cinema: the Chinese in American feature films. From the first Chinese American film produced in 1916, to Ang Lee's triumphant Brokeback Mountain almost a century later, Hollywood Chinese brings together a fascinating portrait of actors, directors, writers and iconic images to show how the Chinese have been imagined in movies, and how filmmakers have and continue to navigate an industry that was often ignorant about race, but at times paradoxically receptive.

007When you talk about Bond Girls, it's interesting to note that a majority of these actresses often suffered career lag after their participation in 007's adventures. Even if we can understand that they weren't all primarily trained for the Shakespearean stage (with one exception), all in all, the results are often quite sad. Is playing a Bond Girl a curse for an acting career? We'll see.

1977. On the one hand, disco was raging on the dancefloor. On the other, dinosaur acts such as Pink Floyd were hogging the stadiums and arenas. But for the younger and up-and-coming bands in New York, they had supportive clubs such as CBGB. Above all, they wanted to create music that meant something to themselves and their peers. And they really needed to reclaim rock music for themselves. And they had that do-it-yourself punk ethic.

Playing on January 26, 1977, Talking Heads were still about nine months shy from the release of their debut album, 77, but the group already had their intellectually stimulating and frenzied, staccato sound patented down. Even the dance-y rhythms were already in place - listen to the rolling basslines in The Book I Read. And how can anyone not be moved by the percussive Psycho Killer?

The tortured history of the TMS feature film Little Nemo: Adventures In Slumberland (1992) could rival that of Richard Williams The Thief And The Cobbler. It was an American/Japanese joint project, with no less than Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata involved in the pre-production stage (1982-83).

George Lucas, Chuck Jones, Gary Kurtz, Ray Bradbury, Chris Columbus, Moebius, John Canemaker, Leo Salkin, Paul Julian, Ken Anderson, Frank Thomas and Brad Bird (who talks about his involvement in the comments below) were attached to this film at one time or another.

Don Rickles is back in a big way of late. An autobiography, an HBO documentary, appearances on Kimmel, Letterman and all the others, plus no less than thirty live gigs a month, the old man is a throw back to a lost era of showbiz. If you haven't seen him live, you should... if only for the novelty of seeing him sing(!), tell sentimental tales of The Rat Pack, and close his act with the weird dedication to "our brave boys fighting overseas so we can enjoy a bit of comedy here at home." Here's a gallery of links to Don Rickles all over the television dial!

Between 1900 and 1930, thousands upon thousands of European immigrants, African-Americans, and rural Midwestern youths relocated to Chicago in search of steady work and broader social opportunities. Intrigued by their new urban surroundings, they embraced new forms of commercial culture that made social interaction in the multi-ethnic, multi-racial city easier and more enjoyable. Many of the city's department stores, movie theaters, and amusement parks thrived by offering settings in which Chicagoans of all backgrounds could partake in city life as equals. By popularizing not just jazz music, but countless other amusements as well, Jazz Age Chicagoans laid the groundwork for the spread of mass culture across the nation during the twentieth century.

Wikinews has obtained Operating Thetan (OT) documents of the Church of Scientology which were leaked via Wikileaks. Although some portions of the manual have been leaked previously, this is believed to be the first time the full unedited version has become publicly available.

The 612-page manual for Scientologists written by L. Ron Hubbard contains instructions for the eight different Operating Thetan levels including 'clear' and OT8.

Most of the manual is typed from a computer, while the packet contains some hand written notes by Hubbard himself who also signed them. The manual also contains letters by Hubbard to individuals who have passed the according levels.

"A great many phenomena (strange things) can happen while doing these drills, if they are done honestly," Hubbard writes in regards to 'OT1.'

THE TRUTH ABOUT SCIENCE FICTION FANS, GARGANTUA THE CIRCUS APE, ARTIE LANGE QUITS HOWARD STERN, HOLLYWOOD RE-MAKING 38 FILMS, THE LOST MUSLIM TRIBE OF AMERICA!

The following article sent in by Surfer The Drewster shows how good news can be reported as bad:

Science fiction fans are socially dysfunctional, bookish nerds with a tendency to dress up in Star Trek uniforms and exchange greetings in Klingon. They are invariably male and have little sense of personal hygiene. Or so the popular stereotype would have us believe. Like most cultural generalisations, this is about as accurate as the claims that all women are less intelligent than men, people remain unemployed because they are lazy, and all Liverpudlians are light-fingered. Nevertheless, stereotypes abide, sometimes through prejudice, but mostly through ignorance and a negative, simplistic perception of the genre itself.

The ethnic groups in Russia that were either decimated or cippled. From Surfer Richard Crowe:

Ben Ishmael were a collective of thousands of runaway slaves, Native Americans and "poor whites" who created a nomadic colony in the Kentucky Hills in 1790. They lived far from settled communities (for obvious reasons) and were forced out of inhabited lands at a regular pace. When Kentucky farmlands became slave-farms, they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. From Cincinnati they were driven out, tracing a settlement pattern through Indiana and finally to various small towns in Illinois (mostly southern parts). Cities like Mahomet, Mecca, Morocco and Cairo bear the names of some of these settlements. Surfer Richard Crowe may have topped himself on this one! They were wiped out to the last person by government sponsored sterilizations.
