5 FAMOUS INVENTORS WHO STOLE THEIR IDEA, DISCRIMINATION BY WEIGHT NOW SURPASSES RACISM, SOUTH AFRICA THEN AND NOW, THE BACON BRA, BAGHDAD'S ONLY HEAVY METAL BAND, 16 THINGS THEY SHOULD TEACH IN SCHOOLS, HUMAN - COW EMBRYOS!
When comedy legend Del Close realized he was going to die, he decided to host a Birthday Party in the hospital. Here is the story and video of that party:
It always amazes the number of people who don't venture out of their home to take advantage of all Chicago has going for it. Joss Stone is going to be playing at Taste of Chicago this year- FREE. B.B. King and Johnny Winter at Blues Fest- FREE. (Chicagoans don't go to Taste for the food- we go for the music). Summerdance with outdoor dancing and the skyline as the backdrop- FREE. The secret to Chicago- is treat it like a tourist. If you can't, move to Ohio!
It's illegal to discriminate against someone because of race or gender, but our culture condones a bias against people who are overweight. There are no federal laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of weight, and only Michigan has such a law, according to a new study from Yale University.

Attempting to promulgate Dada ideas throughout Europe, Tristan Tzara launched the art and literature review Dada. Appearing in July 1917, the first issue of Dada, subtitled Miscellany of Art and Literature, featured contributions from members of avant-garde groups throughout Europe, including Giorgio de Chirico, Robert Delaunay, and Wassily Kandinsky. Marking the magazine's debut, Tzara wrote in the Zurich Chronicle, 'Mysterious creation! Magic Revolver! The Dada Movement is Launched.'

Issue 2 appeared in December of 1918. Issue number 3 violated all the rules and conventions in typography and layout and undermined established notions of order and logic. Printed in newspaper format in both French and German editions, it embodies Dada's celebration of nonsense and chaos with an explosive mixture of manifestos, poetry, and advertisements - all typeset in randomly ordered lettering. Included is Tzara's 'Dada Manifesto of 1918,' which was read at Meise Hall in Zurich on July 23, 1918, and is perhaps the most important of the Dadaist manifestos. http://www.ubuweb.com/historical/dada/index.html

Lets start with the basic story which is the background for all of the stories on the Lincoln Imp. It starts with Satan sending the imp to Lincoln Cathedral to cause trouble.

HUMAN-cow embryos have been created in a world first at Newcastle University in England, hailed by the scientific community, but labelled "monstrous" by opponents.
A team has grown hybrid embryos after injecting human DNA into eggs taken from cows' ovaries, which had most of their genetic material removed.
The embryos survived for three days and are intended to provide a limitless supply of stem cells to develop therapies for diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and spinal cord injuries, overcoming a worldwide shortfall in human embryos.
Dr Teija Peura, director of human embryonic stem cell laboratories at the Australian Stem Cell Centre, said somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) had been done between animal species, but the "99 per cent human" embryos could boost research.

The astonishingly stunning Michelle L'Amour headlines at the best deal in town for burlesque- the first Wednesday of the month at The Motel Bar. No cover. 10pm prompt start time. Lot's of girls!
"The Motel Bar has the kitschy, oddly classy ambiance of a '70s roadside flophouse, but on the first Wednesday of every month, it plays host to the popular '20s art form of burlesque. The Star and Garter burlesque girls tease and seduce while shaking and jiggling their goodies to live music. For those who are intimidated by all that skin, Absolut drinks specials should offer some liquid courage."
Here is Michelle on AMERICA'S GOT TALENT!

The new exhibition includes several photo-realist paintings of carefully selected movie scenes in which a dramatically framed actress is central. The paintings are composed of two separate scenes from different movies, one black-and-white and one color, stacked horizontally so that one scene seems to bear weight upon the other and a new relationship or narrative is formed. The strong female protagonist of each frame conveys the scenes' emotional impact, and the inevitable nostalgia of McDermott & McGough's selected imagery lends a sense of cool introspection. The sensibility of the large scale, horizontally-composed paintings are echoed in a series of eight photo-realist paintings of 1960s era televisions, the distinctly boxy but individually unique exteriors framing single black-and-white scenes, the actresses' expressive faces filling the screen http://www.cheimread.com/exhibitions/2008-03-21_mcdermott-and-mcgough/

The volunteer treasurer of the Madison County Humane Society in Indiana was charged this month with using $65,000 of the charity"s money to buy jewelry and makeup. In San Francisco, the chief financial officer of the Music Concourse Community Partnership was fired after he was accused of taking $3.6 million of the organization's money to play the stock market. Nonprofit leaders tend to shrug off such cases as evidence of "just a few bad apples." But a new report, trying to identify the scope of such thefts for the first time, suggests otherwise. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/29/us/29fraud.html?_r=2&scp=1&sq=strom+light&st=nyt&oref=slogin&oref=slogin

War, Inc. (Trailer and Info) War, Inc. is a dark political satire film starring John Cusack and Hilary Duff and directed by Joshua Seftel. Cusack also wrote and produced the film. A working title of the film was "Brand Hauser: Stuff Happens." The story is partly inspired by Naomi Klein's article "Baghdad Year Zero." http://thelastmovement.blogspot.com/2008/03/war-inc-trailer-and-info.html

In Communist propaganda, women were fully equal and integrated into the military. In reality however....
Western pornography was banned under communism, but the armed forces of the former East Germany made their own sex films featuring bare-breasted female soldiers that were enjoyed by senior officers and outwardly prudish hard-line politicians. Evidence of the former communist state's secret porn industry surfaced yesterday in a documentary made by eastern Germany's MDR television channel. It showed original film clips of nude subalterns kissing, and female army privates in helmets posing semi-naked on parade. The programme, Pornography made in the German Democratic Republic, revealed that the East German army, which at the time was one of the most feared in the Warsaw Pact, ran a 160-man film unit devoted to making porn. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/europe/stasis-official-pornography-department-finally-exposed-801774.html

DINNER WITH HENRY MILLER, LSD COMICBOOK, 10 UNREASONABLE PARKING TICKETS, TOPLESS VICTORY IN COPENHAGEN!
A novel co-written by Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs, two giants of the "Beat Generation" of poets, writers and drug-takers, is to be published for the first time more than 60 years after it was written. And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks, written in 1945, was inspired by an actual killing which led to the arrest of both authors.

Here, on a notorious drug trafficking corner on the South Side of Chicago, Google shows what looks very much like a transaction between a black man in long shorts and a baseball cap, and a sedan, numberplate clearly visible. And, because the map-makers take panoramic photographs as they drive around, one can see the exchange from at least half a dozen angles, as the van approaches, and then looks back. Amazing. http://gawker.com/5004469/a-drug-deal-caught-from-every-angle

Hillary Rodham Clinton's cash-strapped presidential campaign has been putting off paying hundreds of bills for months — freeing up cash for critical media buys, but also earning the campaign a reputation as something of a deadbeat in some small business circles.
A pair of Ohio companies owed more than $25,000 by Clinton for staging events for her campaign are warning others in the tight-knit event production community — and anyone else who will listen — to get their cash upfront when doing business with her. Her campaign, say representatives of the two companies, has stopped returning phone calls and e-mails seeking payment of outstanding invoices. One even got no response from a certified letter.

One day, when he played with his grandchildren, it occurred to him that he could teach karate to children because his height in a wheelchair was almost as tall as children. I recently was listening to an X-M radio station show hosted by Bob Dylan (my favorite 'folk singer') and he talked about a song by Hank Williams entitled "No No Joe", which was a song directed at Joseph Stalin.
Here are the lyrics:
Now look her Joe quit acting smart Stop being that old brazen sort Don't you go sellin' this country short? No, no, Joe
Just because you think you've found The system that we know ain't sound Don't you go throwin' your weight around? No, no Joe
Coz the Kaiser tried and Hitler tried it Mussolini tried it too Now they're all sittin' around a fire and did you know They're saving place for you
Now Joe you ought to get it clear You can't push folks around with fear Coz we don't scare easy over here No, no Joe
What makes you do the things you do? You gettin' folks mad at you Don't bite off more than you can chew? No, no Joe
Coz you want a scrap that you can't win You don't know what you're getting in Don't you go around leading with your chin? No, no Joe
Now you got tanks some fair size tanks But you're acting like a clown Cause man we got Yanks don't mess with Yanks And you might get caught with your tanks down
Don't go throwin' out your chest You'll pop the buttons off you vest You're playing with a hornet's nest No, no Joe
You know you think you're somebody we should dread Just because you're seeing red You better get that foolishness out of your head No, no Joe
And you might be itching for a fight Quit braggin' about how your bear can bite Coz you're sitting on a keg of dynamite No, no Joe
I love the line "Just because you think you've found the system that we know ain't sound".
The song has a somewhat fascinating history, as Hank Williams didn't record it under his name, but instead under the name "Luke the Drifter" for fear of a counter-reaction against it that would impact his popularity. His more religious, moral and political songs were recorded under this name. What does this tell us about the biases in popular culture circa 1950s?
You can hear the song here: http://www.lulu.tv/?p=14420. Click on "No, No Joe".

DR. PEPPER BEGS AXL ROSE TO RELEASE CHINESE DEMOCRACY, HILLARY CLINTON'S WHACKY RELIGION, FREE MISS TIBET, THE WORST HEADLINE OF ALL TIME (SEE BEST OF), HELLO KITTY RECTAL THERMOMITOR!

New global warming movement says adapting to global warming is cheaper than taxing and spending billions to prevent potential problems
There's a reason Hillary Clinton has remained relatively silent during the flap over intemperate remarks by Barack Obama's former pastor, Jeremiah Wright. When it comes to unsavory religious affiliations, she's a lot more vulnerable than Obama.
You can find all about it in a widely under-read article in the September 2007 issue of Mother Jones, in which Kathryn Joyce and Jeff Sharlet reported that "through all of her years in Washington, Clinton has been an active participant in conservative Bible study and prayer circles that are part of a secretive Capitol Hill group known as "The "Fellowship," also known as The Family. But it won't be a secret much longer. Jeff Sharlet's shocking exposé The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power will be published in May.

Richard Widmark, a great actor, has died. Here he is as psycho Tommy Udo in KISS OF DEATH:
Great films he was in include: HOW THE WEST WAS WON, PANIC IN THE STREETS, KISS OF DEATH, PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET, WARLOCK, JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG, The unreal THE LONG SHIPS, THE BEDFORD INCIDENT, the first film to have the director's credit ALAN SMITHEE DEATH OF A GUNFIGHTER, and the should be a classic John Ford's CHEYENNE AUTUMN. Hey, start hitting NETFLIX!
Cheyenne Autumn was received not too successfully. I still think it was a very good movie. It was kinda Ford's apology for the way he had treated Indians in his past pictures. Richard Widmark

NATIONAL ELECTRONICS STORES RETURN TO HAGGLING, WHEN COMIC BOOKS WERE BANNED, STORY BEHIND THE GREATEST SPORTS PIC, ILLINOIS CRIME STORY OF THE YEAR (SO FAR)!
Headline writers give it their all in the battle to see who can write the corniest caption in the ongoing Mills/McCartney divorce case.
Bruce Dinsmor sends us one cool animation: Just click on the link below, click on play,
then leave the mouse alone, sit back and
enjoy a piece of creative brilliance.
In 2008, it's hard to believe that comic books could be the centre of heated political disputes, but in early days of the Cold War, comics were as controversial as communism. In his splendid new cultural history The Ten-Cent Plague, respected U.S. cultural critic David Hajdu vividly brings this half-remembered debate to life, showing that the fierce struggle over comics was an important battle in a cultural war over youth and freedom that continues to rage to this day. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20080322.BKJEET22/TPStory/Entertainment/Books/?&pageRequested=all&print=true
Jerry Lodriguss won the Pro Football Photograph of the Year for 1980 in the NFL Hall of Fame photo contest after his shot of Ike Harris getting upended during a New Orleans Saints-LA Rams game. However, he's got quite a story about how he actually captured the image.

Iraq's rising prosperity is to be symbolically marked this week with the inauguration of a new stock exchange system in Baghdad. The country's small band of traders are to mark the end of an era with the switch to electronic trading. It will be a milestone in the nation's recovery.

There is a technology war coming. Actually it is already here but most of us haven't yet notice. It is a war not about technology but because of technology, a war over how we as a culture embrace technology. It is a war that threatens venerable institutions and, to a certain extent, threatens what many people think of as their very way of life. It is a war that will ultimately and inevitably change us all, no going back. The early battles are being fought in our schools. And I already know who the winners will be.
Banished to the basement, the 29-year-old mother with a childlike mind and another baby on the way had little more than a thin rug and a mattress to call her own on the chilly concrete floor.

Dorothy Dixon ate what she could forage from the refrigerator upstairs, where housemates used her for target practice with BBs, burned her with a glue gun and doused her with scalding liquid that peeled away her skin.

Double Star, An extravagantly improbable space-opera of a novel, this classic work of science fiction anticipated more than just the 2000 Turner prize

In 1968, when Charles Hall tried to apply for a patent on the waterbed he thought he had invented, he found he was unable to do so because Heinlein had already described one in sufficient detail in Double Star (and other places). This impressive bit of technological pre-empting sits neatly alongside the fact that the book is generally cited as the first to use the abbreviation "ET" (or at least, eetee). Elsewhere, there are dozens of other inventive ideas, which may not have been realised, but do sound cool. There's real appeal to a sealed off "Hush Corner" noise reduction areas for intimate conversations in crowded bars, for example, while "Bounce Tube" pneumatic transport systems for people might do a lot to improve commuting.
In common with much of the best SF, it's not just the scientific ideas that make this book worthy of investigation. History does too. The political concerns and philosophy that Heinlein chooses to project onto his imagined future also provide an intriguing barometer of his times.

WORLD PILLOW FIGHT DAY, WAIT A SECOND- GLOBAL WARMING ENDED 10 YEARS AGO? WHAT?, TOP BEACHES AROUND THE WORLD, WHY DO MOST RELATIONSHIPS FAIL?
Great UK report on the South By Southwest music festival:
Annual deaths from drug use (about 2,000) are still minuscule compared with those related to alcohol and tobacco (about 160,000). The only way to make our streets safe is to wipe Drugs Inc off the map. The only way to do that is to legalise the trade.
After the Tate murders, Manson and some of his followers hid for months at the remote Barker Ranch in California's Death Valley, where they were eventually arrested.

The area, the setting for episodes of television's Bonanza and The Lone Ranger, was a magnet for hippies and drifters. Police heard stories of many youngsters who hitchhiked in, stopped at the ranch and were never seen again; but resources and technology were not available to search for them.

Duffy asked Marohasy: "Is the Earth stillwarming?" She replied: "No, actually, there has been cooling, if you take 1998 as your point of reference. If you take 2002 as your point of reference, then temperatures have plateaued. This is certainly not what you'd expect if carbon dioxide is driving temperature because carbon dioxide levels have been increasing but temperatures have actually been coming down over the last 10 years."
Duffy: "Is this a matter of any controversy?"
Marohasy: "Actually, no." http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,23411799-7583,00.html

Since 1998 a brutal war has been raging in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Over 4 million people have died. And there are the uncountable casualties: the many tens of thousands of women and girls who have been systematically kidnapped, raped, mutilated and tortured by soldiers from both foreign militias and the Congolese army. The world knows nothing of these women. Their stories have never been told. They suffer and die in silence. In The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo these brave women finally speak. http://www.thegreatestsilence.org/
"When I first saw it on the conference portion of the SXSW website, I knew I'd be there: a conversation between Thurston Moore, the singer and guitar player in pioneering art-rock troupe Sonic Youth, and Steve Reich, the heralded American minimalist composer whose percussion masterworks include "Drumming" and "Music for 18 Musicians." Moore, at 49, is arguably the wisest elder of indie rock, his band Sonic Youth having cranked out some 16 albums since forming in the early 80's, while Reich, who is 72, is arguably the greatest living American composer, having influenced a subsequent generation of artists bridging classical music, rock, electronica, and even hip-hop." http://www.dmwmedia.com/news/2008/03/16/sxsw-conversation%3A-thurston-moore-%2526amp%3B-steve-reich
