Amazing site: The New York That Might Have Been
Science fiction and fantasy author Andre Norton, who wrote the popular "Witch World" series, has died. She was 93. Her death was announced by friend Jean Rabe, who said Norton died Thursday of congestive heart failure at her home in Murfreesboro, a Nashville suburb. Norton requested before her death that she not have a funeral service, but instead asked to be cremated along with a copy of her first and last novels.
Born Alice Mary Norton on Feb. 17, 1912, in Cleveland, she wrote more than 130 books in many genres during her career of nearly 70 years. She used a pen name - which she made her legal name in 1934 - because she expected to be writing mostly for young boys and thought a male name would help sales.
She was the 60's swinger who became the definition of Hollywood liberal, making it with members of the Black Panthers, women, though it's all in denial now.
Along the way, she also became one of America's best actresses, though she doesn't seem to have much interest in it anymore.
A really good article that reminds us- that once she defined cool. http://www.swinginchicks.com/jane_fonda.htm
What has been lost in the outrage of Jane Fonda visiting Hanoi during the Viet Nam war was that week the movie F.T.A. was being released. It was quickly pulled out of circulation. I managed to see it at a protest rally and it was astonishing. Tens of thousand's of soldiers went to those shows, and many began to speak out against the war. She was outdrawing Bob Hope! It would have stunned the nation and the press- but her trip destroyed the good it would have accomplished.
She wasn't speaking to men the weekend of the demonstrations and was openly making out with a folk singer whose name you'll find out here.
She wasn't speaking to her lover Donald Southerland while she was "exploring her sexuality" either. Long after Vadim was gone!
Honey, it's 2005. Cheney has a lesbian daughter. I think it's ok to discuss why you liked women! http://movies.msn.com/movies/movie.aspx?m=29385

"A fireball created in a US particle accelerator has the characteristics of a black hole, a physicist has said.
It was generated at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) in New York, US, which smashes beams of gold nuclei together at near light speeds.
Horatiu Nastase says his calculations show that the core of the fireball has a striking similarity to a black hole."
How did this strange ritual begin? "Freebird" is hardly obscure -- it's a radio staple consistently voted one of rock's greatest songs. One version -- and an important piece of the explanation -- anchors Skynyrd's 1976 live album "One More From the Road." On the record, singer Ronnie Van Zant, who was killed along with two other bandmates in a 1977 plane crash, asks the crowd, "What song is it you want to hear?" That unleashes a deafening call for "Freebird," and Skynyrd obliges with a 14-minute rendition.

BEST SITE OF THE DAY:
Now that he is being smeared by yet another former free spirit turned politically correct, this Salon article is worth reading.
You know, all Jane Fonda had to say was that at the time she was not a feminist, she doesn't have to smear a dead guy. And since I met her when she was camped out with a woman folk singer, while seeing Donald Southerland, leaves some interesting questions about when this behavior ended. Anyway- Roger Vadim:
Roger Vadim, who died in Paris on Feb. 11 at 72, was the classiest exploitation filmmaker who ever lived. That's not intended to belittle the director, as some of the American obituaries that have appeared seem bent on doing. (If you read Alan Riding's obit in the New York Times you might wonder what's worse: death or having your life summed up by this guy.) Probably no screen purveyor of gratuitous female flesh has ever been so blithe, so beguiled by the leading ladies who paraded nude through his movies. The fact that those women were frequently his wives (Brigitte Bardot, Annette Stroyberg, Jane Fonda) or mistresses (Catherine Deneuve) might help to explain Vadim's unique brand of exhibitionist tenderness, but I think there's another reason: Vadim adored women.

Hahn's watercolor paintings in 'Twilight Chorus' transport the viewer to scenes from heaven and hell, populated by Japanese deities, demons and anime characters. During a recent trip to Kyoto, Hahn, who has studied Japanese art and traveled extensively in Japan over the past twenty five years, noticed striking similarities between the iconography of Catholicism she grew up with and ancient Buddhist art describing hell. Her paintings reflect similarities between hells, updating the concept with themes including mass marketing and the ubiquity of anime in both cultures."
After analysing the eradication of millions of ancient species, scientists have found that a mass extinction is due any moment now. Their research has shown that every 62 million years - plus or minus 3m years - creatures are wiped from the planet's surface in massive numbers. And given that the last great extinction occurred 65m years ago, when dinosaurs and thousands of other creatures abruptly disappeared, the study suggests humanity faces a fairly pressing danger. Even worse, scientists have no idea about its source. 'There is no doubting the existence of this cycle of mass extinctions every 62m years. It is very, very clear from analysis of fossil records,' said Professor James Kirchner, of the University of California, Berkeley. 'Unfortunately, we are all completely baffled about the cause.' http://education.guardian.co.uk/higher/research/story/0,9865,1437163,00.html

St. Patrick's Day is a very special day around the world, but nowhere is it more special than in Ireland, where it all started. St. Patrick, Ireland's patron saint, brought Christianity to the pagan Celts almost 1500 years ago. Whether you are Irish, or just wish that you were, his feast day on March 17th is the time to celebrate, and Ireland is THE place to be!
Dublin, the capital city, will quite literally be turned on it head this year as Ireland's greatest annual celebration takes over. An exciting 5-day programme of events includes street theatre, fireworks, music, exhibitions, symposiums, fun fairs and even a treasure hunt. Visitors can enjoy the spectacular 3 km-long St. Patrick's Day Festival parade, join in the dancing at the largest outdoor Céilí, and choose from a selection of Irish music concerts. Streets are closed to traffic and the city centre becomes a playground as revelers enjoy the entertainment, most of which is free. The "craic" (an Irish word for fun) is guaranteed!
To watch the parade live on March 17th at 12:30 pm GMT, go here!
If you can't wait until tomorrow you can watch the previous 2 years parades here too.
BTW if you're ever coming to Ireland the main page is great resource. http://www.tourismireland.com/stpatricksday/

In 1957, Charlie's 'Butterfly' topped the American and British music charts, selling over 3 million copies. His other late fifties big sellers include: 'Fabulous', 'Ninety-Nine Ways', 'Wanderin Eyes' and 'I Love You So Much It Hurts'. These hits bankrolled Philly's famous Cameo-Parkway record label, making it a dominant force in the music industry for nearly a decade! At the height of his fame, Charlie frequently appeared on 'Dick Clark's American Bandstand', 'The Ed Sullivan Show', and 'Alan Freed's TV Specials'.

Today, if you've heard of him at all, it's as the Ed Wood of mystery novelists, a writer reputed to be so bad he's good. Actually, no genre, nor "camp," can much suggest what Keeler is all about. Take some typical Keeler situations:

Jack the Ripper. There have been movies, books, TV shows- the fact of the matter is that we don't know how old he was, where he lived, what he did for employment, whether he was married with children, or what nationality he belonged to.
Moreover, despite mountains of theory and speculation, no single investigator in the last century has been able to establish the true identity of the Whitechapel Murderer, as he was originally called, or exactly how many women he killed. Yet, there was something about that gas-lit era of Victorian London, with Jack stalking the foggy alleys and courts with his razor-sharp knives that sends shivers through us all and we have made this human predator and homicidal maniac into something of celebrity.

To the generally pop-literate, Thomas Dolby is best known for his 1983 novelty hit "She Blinded Me With Science." But that reputation bothers Dolby diehards, who know his contributions to music in the '80s reach beyond one silly technopop single. As a session musician, Dolby added synthesizers to Def Leppard's Pyromania and Foreigner's 4, two megahit albums that crossed hard-rock and pop, using keyboards to provide shade and color. As a producer, Dolby created the wiggy sonic environment of Whodini's seminal rap hit "Magic's Wand" (which he also wrote) and the subtle soundscapes of Prefab Sprout's soft Britpop masterpieces Steve McQueen (a.k.a. Two Wheels Good in the U.S.) and Jordan: The Comeback. He also produced Joni Mitchell and George Clinton, and has backed Robyn Hitchcock, Roger Waters, Joan Armatrading, and Malcolm McLaren, among others.

The teenager is a uniquely human phenomenon. Adolescents are known to be moody, insecure, argumentative, angst-ridden, impulsive, impressionable, reckless and rebellious. Teenagers are also characterised by odd sleeping patterns, awkward growth spurts, bullying, acne and slobbish behaviour. So what could be the possible benefit of the teenage phase? Most other animals - apes and human ancestors included - skip that stage altogether, developing rapidly from infancy to full adulthood. Salvador Dali was a truly original artist. From the beginning, he painted real objects and people with a dreamlike precision; later, he would portray the strange shapes of his dreams with a vivid, mundane particularity. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, he painted like a visionary of the unconscious. But today he is dismissed by most critics and scholars as a venal schlock-monger because by 1936, when he appeared on the cover of Time, he had become an indefatigable and playfully self-conscious entrepreneur and self-promoter. Dali created display windows for Bonwit-Teller; came up with an advertisement in Vogue for Bryans Hosiery; wrote a sensationalist autobiography; fashioned greeting cards for Hallmark; devised a computerized picture of Raquel Welch; made a hologram of Alice Cooper. This shrewd, practical man had once wanted, he irresistibly wrote in 1930, "to systematize confusion and contribute to the total discrediting of the world of reality." Given this, Dali's whirlwind commercial activities seemed appallingly to consecrate the idea of inauthenticity and self-betrayal. Or did they?

But Mr. Rose's renewed energies were not being directed toward the finish line. He had the crew send him CD's almost daily, sometimes with 16 or more takes of a musician performing his part of a single song. He accompanied Buckethead on a jaunt to Disneyland when the guitarist was drifting toward quitting, several people involved recalled; then Buckethead announced he would be more comfortable working inside a chicken coop, so one was built for him in the studio, from wood planks and chicken wire.
This artist see's and works with angels in the art. Pretty cool and a bit WAY out there...... Actually I like the way angels and heaven and hell have evolved. Angels went from coming to earth to inspire mayhem and kill kids to all nice and friendly to us, and in the Bible it is very clear that we are all part of huge military scheme for an end times battle with the devil that will cost many lives (so much for eternal life) to fight this war. Today angels inspire people, and heaven is a place where you can eat ice cream, shop all day and have all your lovers and pets.

Let's hope for the Christian's sake the early Christians were wrong about that whole end times battle with the Devil and his forces thing.

WHEN THE RAPTURE COMES, MISSING SLAVES, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, COOKIE MONSTER AT WORK! WENDY'S WORLD
Wendy and her pal Ralph the Sock Monkey (above) prepare for Wendy's marathon run- see the Best Of today below!
The rapture: When all the believers in Jesus Christ, who have been born again, are taken up to heaven. After the rapture, there will be a lot of speculation as to why millions of people have just disappeared. Unfortunately, after the rapture, only non believers will be left to come up with answers. You probably have family and friends that you have witnessed to and they just won't listen. After the rapture they probably will, but who will tell them? http://www.raptureletters.com/ A human rights group in the desert West African nation of Niger called off what it billed as a mass liberation of 7,000 slaves after none showed up for the ceremony. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/050307/344/fdubb.html A woman motorist drove 10 miles along a US interstate not knowing her pet cat was on the roof of her car. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/050305/344/fdri2.html The great Stop F-ing Him post, not ok for work! http://www.livejournal.com/users/wicked_wish/463017.html Wine Dimple Theory Is it true that you can judge the value of a bottle of wine by the size of the dimple in the bottle? http://www.museumofhoaxes.com/hoax/weblog/permalink/wine_dimple_theory_part_2/ World Record for Smoking Image shows a man smoking 800 cigarettes, at the same time. http://www.museumofhoaxes.com/hoax/weblog/permalink/world_record_for_smoking/ Sergeant Brian Horn from LaPlata, Maryland, an Army Infantry Soldier with the 173rd Airborne Brigade was in the Kirkuk area of Iraq when he started the idea of AnySoldier to help care for his soldiers. Surf W/ Coolest Wrestling Show Ever!
SEXO Y VIOLENCIA WRESTLING, THE UNDERDOG SHOW, HOME MADE FIREWORKS, GONE WITH THE WIND BEHIND THE SCENES!
As the FCC and the entertainment biz get ready to end home recording as we know it, a bunch of radical geeks are working on a solution or two.
Back after World War 1, audiences filled this huge theater for burlesque, movies and other working class delights. Most of these old theaters have been shut down, run down and destroyed. The 3000 seat Congress Theater in Chicago has managed to keep going, today hosting everything from monthly Luche Libre wrestlers to rock concerts. It is a fun place to see a show. http://www.congresschicago.com/HomeComing.asp
Sexo Y Violencia! Lucha VaVoom! This just may be the wildest wrestling promotion of all time. They are coming to Chicago on Cinco de Mayo, I am so there. Burlesque queens, comedians, wrestlers! I think we have one brilliant idea here. Not safe for work.
Incarcerated chess champion Bobby Fischer, tantalizingly close to securing freedom after almost eight months in Japanese cells, may yet find himself being deported to his homeland as the United States government is moving to prosecute him for tax evasion, the Mainichi Daily News learned Saturday.
Although Iceland has a special foreigner's passport waiting in its Tokyo Embassy for the 62-year-old grandmaster's release, his supporters have an airplane ticket to Reykjavik for him, and moves are afoot to grant him citizenship of that country, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service is about to begin legal action against Fischer.
The Underdog Show is still funny. The Underdog Show began with a parody of Superman's famous opening: "Look, up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's a frog...a frog?" At that point, the canine would correct the observers with: "Not bird, nor plane, nor even frog, it's just little 'ole me, Underdog !" Like his human counterpart, Underdog was not infallible. While he didn't have to contend with Kryptonite, occasionally his power would fade, causing him all kinds of trouble. For cases like that, the pooch would carry a revitalizing energy pill in a secret compartment in his ring.

The Ranch Girls and the Ragtime Wranglers have been playing rock-a-billy / hillbilly based songs with female harmony vocal duets, songs from their musical heroes of the 40's and 50's as well as new originals, most of them written by 'Ranch Girl' Mary Ann. No nostalgia here, but looking back and recreating the past.
Want to make homemade fireworks and fireworks displays? This is the place to go. Chock full of recipes and ideas for displays using basic consumer fireworks, as well as instructions on how to make your own shells and mortars. I suggest checking out the "Fireworks Projects" to start out. Includes video clips of these "projects" being lit off. http://www.pyrouniverse.com/
This bar ROCKS!! Excellent streaming audio/video cam puts you right there. By far my favorite cam since Jailcam. Don't forget to go full screen to get that OOOOHHHH YEEAAAAHHHH sensation when the babes get crazy at Last Call :D
BEST SITE OF THE DAY:
This online exhibit draws on materials from the David O. Selznick Collection at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin to illustrate three aspects of the classic film: how the rights to the novel were acquired, the two year search for the perfect actress
to play Scarlett O'Hara, and Costumes and Makeup.
