I recently tried to look up the history of automated funhouse rides at amusement parks...you know the ones you ride through the dark and all the automated stuff pops out at you? I was disappointed at the lack of information that comes up when you punch "funhouse" into Google (the Stooges album hogs all the links). I soon realized that this is because the official name of this type of ride is not "funhouse," but "dark ride." I'm the last to know. A dark ride is any amusement park attraction that plops riders into a mechanical car and follows a single track through a dark, often serpentine, indoor space

Star forts are incredible, relatively unappreciated structures that have recently become a fascination of mine - humungous constructions that only really become visually stunning when you look down on them from above. this type of fortification design was adopted in the early 16th century as people realised that simpler, often circular forts were pretty crap when it came to the job in hand: defense.

In 1929 Robert Ripley, the man who created the RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT franchise discovered that America had no national anthem! Six attempts to make the song the anthem were stopped by Congress who recognized the tune to be a note for note copy of a British drinking song. Ripley did a short fim for movie theaters in which he explained that we had no anthem in 1930, and Herbert Hoover would make the song our anthem. The concession to tee totalers to keep people from drinking during the song? Placing your hand over your heart, so you couldn't drink! Find that in your history books!

The Vitaphone division of Warner Bros. was established in Brooklyn specifically for the production of musical shorts. The Vitaphone process was an early sound format that synched the picture to a record. The proximity of the New York stage provided Vitaphone productions with an endless pool of vaudevillian talent. And in many cases, the Vitaphone shorts are the only surviving recordings of these vaudeville acts. For example, a year before the landmark talkie The Jazz Singer (1927), Al Jolson did a Vitaphone short called A Plantation Act. Other Vitaphone acts included Baby Rose Marie shown in Baby Rose Marie the Child Wonder (1929), George Burns and Gracie Allen featured in Lambchops (1929), and Charlie McCarthy and Edgar Bergen in Nut Guilty (1936). The Nicholas Brothers also sang and danced their way through the Vitaphone short The Black Network (1936). In 1938, Vitaphone studios was moved West and incorporated into the Warner Bros. Hollywood shorts division.

I spent the most formative time of my life, the years 1931-33, as a Gymnasiast and would-be Communist militant, in the dying Weimar Republic. Last autumn I was asked to recall that time in an online German interview under the title 'Ich bin ein Reiseführer in die Geschichte' ('I am a travel guide to history'). Some weeks later, at the annual dinner of the survivors of the school I went to when I came to Britain, the no longer extant St Marylebone Grammar School, I tried to explain the reactions of a 15-year-old suddenly translated to this country in 1933. 'Imagine yourselves,' I told my fellow Old Philologians, 'as a newspaper correspondent based in Manhattan and transferred by your editor to Omaha, Nebraska. That's how I felt when I came to England after almost two years in the unbelievably exciting, sophisticated, intellectually and politically explosive Berlin of the Weimar Republic.
