The Vitaphone division of Warner Bros. was established in Brooklyn specifically for the production of musical shorts. The Vitaphone process was an early sound format that synched the picture to a record. The proximity of the New York stage provided Vitaphone productions with an endless pool of vaudevillian talent. And in many cases, the Vitaphone shorts are the only surviving recordings of these vaudeville acts. For example, a year before the landmark talkie The Jazz Singer (1927), Al Jolson did a Vitaphone short called A Plantation Act. Other Vitaphone acts included Baby Rose Marie shown in Baby Rose Marie the Child Wonder (1929), George Burns and Gracie Allen featured in Lambchops (1929), and Charlie McCarthy and Edgar Bergen in Nut Guilty (1936). The Nicholas Brothers also sang and danced their way through the Vitaphone short The Black Network (1936). In 1938, Vitaphone studios was moved West and incorporated into the Warner Bros. Hollywood shorts division.

ROBERT PLANT, BOB DYLAN, DEAN MARTIN, GRATEFUL DEAD, PHIL SPECTOR: SPECIAL CORINA, CORINA THEME!
The song CORINA, CORINA may be old, but it's always kicking around somewhere. So today's ALL NIGHT SURFING celebrates the song!
Here is Robert Plant singing CORINA, CORINA. This version is very celtic.
Phil Spector, the man who invented the wall of sound produced this unusual version.
Here Bob Dylan does his version. No real video here- but at least you can hear a very nice version of the song.
This is a latin flavored version
This is different. A fan put together Japanese anime with Dean Martin's version of the song. (Some nice guitar solo in it at the end too)
In Argentina the song becomes part of a medley for a tango http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HVQforHDUA I have to learn this dance sometime. I don't even know if it's the same song actually, I get lost watching the dancers!
Here the Grateful Dead do their version

This is an incredible article on the history of marriage. Because of marriage's vital economic and political functions, few societies in history believed that individuals should freely choose their own marriage partners, especially on such fragile grounds as love.

A NEW WATERGATE?: THE FBI has been accused of covering up a key case file detailing evidence against corrupt U.S. government officials and their dealings with a network stealing nuclear secrets.

John Wilson stepped into the massive refrigerator at his home in northwest Illinois and removed a long plastic bag. Although clouded with ice, there was no hiding its gray and pink contents -- the paws, the limbs, the head.
"This is one of the jumbos," Wilson said, holding the bag up for inspection. "We leave the paws on so people know they're getting a raccoon, not somebody's house cat."
The raccoon hunting and trapping seasons are nearing their close in Illinois. And though it may surprise many who dine on deep dish and Polish sausage, the bandit-masked critter is turning up in kitchens across the state. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-raccoon_18_jan18,0,7051357.story

The most powerful American chess player in history, Bobby Fischer, is dead at the age of 64

Cloverfield opens today, ending months of internet speculation and Slusho tie-in controversies. We spoke to the man behind the movie, Matt Reeves. He took time out of his busy day, where he's poised to count bags of incoming cash and laugh maniacally, to talk to us about Gojira, David Schwimmer, and the big secret at the end of the movie. http://io9.com/346501/io9-talks-to-cloverfield-director-matt-reeves
Ten reasons why CLOVERFIELD has become an instant cult classic (minor spoilers ahead)
10. It's not another American version of Godzilla. (Thank God!) Let's get this out of the way first. This movie is not 1998's Hollywood version of Godzilla. Nor is it the movie that Godzilla should've been. Really, aside from the fact that both films feature a gigantic creature thrashing about New York, they're so different in style and intent that any comparisons beyond that should be immediately disregarded. In other words, forget Godzilla. That movie sucked. Cloverfield, meanwhile, is something different entirely, and warrants all the hype it's gotten thus far...
Patients and doctors alike may have received some fuzzy truth about the effectiveness of antidepressant medication. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, many studies have found that best-selling antidepressants like Wyeth's Effexor and Pfizer's Zoloft may have little or even no effect on patients. Many of those studies, though submitted to the Food and Drug Administration, were left unpublished. http://money.cnn.com/2008/01/16/news/companies/antidepressants/?postversion=2008011618
In the 1920s and 1930s, photography became an immense phenomenon across Austria, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Hungary, and Poland. It fired the imagination of hundreds of progressive artists, provided a creative outlet for thousands of devoted amateurs, and became a symbol of modernity for millions through its use in magazines, newspapers, advertising, and books. http://mam.org/FOTO/index.htm
You've all heard the ads, here's how those companies try to raise your credit scores. The credit industry hates it, because it works, at least for now.

WHEN BERLIN ROCKED.........
I spent the most formative time of my life, the years 1931-33, as a Gymnasiast and would-be Communist militant, in the dying Weimar Republic. Last autumn I was asked to recall that time in an online German interview under the title 'Ich bin ein Reiseführer in die Geschichte' ('I am a travel guide to history'). Some weeks later, at the annual dinner of the survivors of the school I went to when I came to Britain, the no longer extant St Marylebone Grammar School, I tried to explain the reactions of a 15-year-old suddenly translated to this country in 1933. 'Imagine yourselves,' I told my fellow Old Philologians, 'as a newspaper correspondent based in Manhattan and transferred by your editor to Omaha, Nebraska. That's how I felt when I came to England after almost two years in the unbelievably exciting, sophisticated, intellectually and politically explosive Berlin of the Weimar Republic. The place was a terrible letdown.' http://www.lrb.co.uk/v30/n02/hobs01_.html

Capitalism may deliver wealth and happiness but it does not inspire us. Socialism continues to inspire, despite having never delivered on any of its promises. Why does one inspire, and one not? How do we choose our heroes? Consider:
Which of the following people would you say is the most admirable: Mother Teresa, Bill Gates or Norman Borlaug? And which do you think is the least admirable? For most people, it’s an easy question. Mother Teresa, famous for ministering to the poor in Calcutta, has been beatified by the Vatican, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and ranked in an American poll as the most admired person of the 20th century. Bill Gates, infamous for giving us the Microsoft dancing paper clip and the blue screen of death, has been decapitated in effigy in “I Hate Gates” Web sites and hit with a pie in the face. As for Norman Borlaug . . . who the heck is Norman Borlaug?

Norman Borlaug has saved 1 billion lives according to the UN. Oprah Winfrey opened a school for several hundred kids. Guess who is more well known, has been the subject of thousands of articles, has had documentaries and specials done on their life? There isn't even a documentary on Borlaug!
Yet a deeper look might lead you to rethink your answers. Borlaug, father of the “Green Revolution” that used agricultural science to reduce world hunger, has been credited with saving a billion lives, more than anyone else in history. Gates, in deciding what to do with his fortune, crunched the numbers and determined that he could alleviate the most misery by fighting everyday scourges in the developing world like malaria, diarrhea and parasites. Mother Teresa, for her part, extolled the virtue of suffering and ran her well-financed missions accordingly: their sick patrons were offered plenty of prayer but harsh conditions, few analgesics and dangerously primitive medical care.

During that year, the well-known animal rights group managed to find adoptive homes for just 12 pets.
