BEST SITE OF THE DAY:

Capitalism may deliver wealth and happiness but it does not inspire us. Socialism continues to inspire, despite having never delivered on any of its promises. Why does one inspire, and one not? How do we choose our heroes? Consider:

Which of the following people would you say is the most admirable: Mother Teresa, Bill Gates or Norman Borlaug? And which do you think is the least admirable? For most people, it’s an easy question. Mother Teresa, famous for ministering to the poor in Calcutta, has been beatified by the Vatican, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and ranked in an American poll as the most admired person of the 20th century. Bill Gates, infamous for giving us the Microsoft dancing paper clip and the blue screen of death, has been decapitated in effigy in “I Hate Gates” Web sites and hit with a pie in the face. As for Norman Borlaug . . . who the heck is Norman Borlaug?

Norman Borlaug has saved 1 billion lives according to the UN. Oprah Winfrey opened a school for several hundred kids. Guess who is more well known, has been the subject of thousands of articles, has had documentaries and specials done on their life? There isn't even a documentary on Borlaug!

Yet a deeper look might lead you to rethink your answers. Borlaug, father of the “Green Revolution” that used agricultural science to reduce world hunger, has been credited with saving a billion lives, more than anyone else in history. Gates, in deciding what to do with his fortune, crunched the numbers and determined that he could alleviate the most misery by fighting everyday scourges in the developing world like malaria, diarrhea and parasites. Mother Teresa, for her part, extolled the virtue of suffering and ran her well-financed missions accordingly: their sick patrons were offered plenty of prayer but harsh conditions, few analgesics and dangerously primitive medical care.

An official report from People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), submitted nine months after a Virginia government agency's deadline, shows that the animal rights group put to death more than 97 percent of the dogs, cats, and other pets it took in for adoption in 2006. During that year, the well-known animal rights group managed to find adoptive homes for just 12 pets.

The nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) is calling on PETA to either end its hypocritical angel-of-death program , or stop its senseless condemnation of Americans who believe it's perfectly ethical to use animals for food, clothing, and critical medical research.

The accidental hero lived in torment. He didn't ask for fame, didn't even want it. Oliver "Billy" Sipple just happened to be standing in the path of history, right next to Sara Jane Moore, the would-be assassin, as she raised a .38 and aimed it at President Gerald R. Ford outside San Francisco's St. Francis Hotel.

Sipple, a former Marine and Vietnam vet, saw the gun. He grabbed Moore's arm as she fired and saved a president's life. Afterward, he told people anybody would have done the same.

Only later, after he was outed in the media as a gay man, after his parents back in Detroit were hounded and teased about their gay son -- only then would he realize the personal price to be paid.  http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/12/30/AR2006123000160.html

If you're one of the 14.3 million households that currently gets their television via over-the-air broadcasts, you'll be without a signal come February 18, 2009. That's the date the US switches from old, boring analog to what is being called by high-ranking officials as "the new hotness" or... digital.

But, you're not completely out of luck. As of yesterday, the US government is giving away 33.5 million $40 coupons to help people buy converter boxes (expected to cost between $50 and $70) so they continue to suck on the sweet electronic teat without interruption. No, don't call your doctor or wash your eyes out with bleach, you read that right: the US government is spending $1.5 billion to help people watch TV.

No Love Lost is a visual project that inhabits sexual environments in contemporary Britain. People featured are active in the increasingly entwined and performative worlds of pornography, prostitution and stripping. What they share is a measured psychological engagement with strangers in close proximity that is a purely physical and sexual union lacking in affection. Fantasy is played out within the frame of constraints and closeness is kept at a distance. Menace is always present, control is often threatened. These are emotionally charged settings, both plastic and primitive, where the ‘stuff’ of life is all too present. Not ok for work. http://www.lensculture.com/grieve.html

Surf W/The Haunted Castle

It's theme time here at ALL NIGHT SURFING today as I cover castles you can stay at right here in the U.S.! Consider it a footnote to the previous post on castles:
Did you know you could stay at some castles? This website has everything you could want to know about castles!  http://www.castles.org/
Well I found many more here in the states- including a haunted one that a Stephen King movie was shot at! (Check the Best of). Enjoy!

THE CASTLES OF THE U.S.

You don't expect to find a medievel castle in Iowa, but here's one you can stay at .

Castle Creek Inn is located 10 minutes from Salt Lake City airport

There is also a castle and medievel Village you can stay at- in Ohio! The price per night is for two and includes breakfast!

The Manresa Castle is a huge place in Port Townsend, Washington. It is probably the most adult oriented of the castles because they include casino specials!

In Camden, Maine honeymooners and lovers head to the Victorian castle, Norumbega.

In this case guests stay in a private carriage house located next door to Herreshoff Castle, which is a reproduction of Erik the Red's 10th-century Viking castle in Greenland. Near the waterfront in the "Old Town" Crocker Park area of Marblehead, Massachusetts

Castle Hill Resort and Spa is located in Vermont

The Castle Inn is the home of the Campbell Castle in Wichita, Kansas.

The Great Stone Castle and Spa is located in Sidney, Ohio

Castle Avalon is located in Texas!

BEST CASTLE SITE OF THE DAY:

How about, America's only haunted castle! A 400 year old  Elizabethan manor in England was purchased by Mr. Thorne and dismantled and shipped brick by brick from England to be included in the building of Thornewood. The famous architect, Kirkland Cutter, was in charge of this most interesting Tudor Gothic project. The crystal windows were made in England. Stained glass panels and chard’s are inset in the window and date 1300 to 1750. You should be looking through them when the snow is falling, magnificent! The staircase as well as the doors were hand hewn from ancient English oak and are held together by wood dowels. Located in the state of Washington

Surf W/Best Links Of 2007

THE BEST ALL NIGHT SURFING SITES OF 2007, plus CARY GRANT ON LSD AND ON BECOMING CARY GRANT!

With over 1200 links the past year here at ALL NIGHT SURFING it was difficult to pick the top dozen. I might even pick a different dozen if I waited a day. You can always go back by using the calendar on the side of these posts and clicking on the arrows above the calendar to find links you may have missed. But for tonight, here are my picks for the best posts of 2007.

From January of 2007:

From March:

There was something in the air in the early years of commercial aviation. Perhaps more excitement, perhaps more glamorous stewardesses... in any case, it's worth savoring once again.

From April:

When a successful pop singer announces they want to write their own music you can bet the record companies get worried. When 19 year old Joss Stone announced she was writing her own material I'm sure they were nervous and afraid. Guess what? She pulled it off! 19 years old, an incredible voice (Aretha Franklin called her the best soul singer around) and a really good songwriter. DAMN!
From May:

OL Shabu Shabu Shomuni is a shabu shabu restaurant that just opened in November, and it serves more than just boiled beef and vegetables. The waitresses are all dressed like Office Ladies, and are required to strip down to the nude and then put on a slutty outfit at request, while you eat out of their hands. Yes, their hands! No chopsticks here. http://www.tokyomango.com/tokyo_mango/2007/01/new_restaurant_.html#more

From June:

In 1969 Don Rickles got his first big break on prime time when Dean Martin turned his entire show over to him. It made Rickles a household name, and you can watch the fireworks here:

From July:

Hello Kitty Hell is the best, funniest website on HELLO KITTY I have ever seen. Yet while keeping tongue firmly in cheek, you are also informed of all the goings on in the Hello Kitty empire. Did you know there was a Hello Kitty musical for example? Like Hello Kitty or hate it, you will love this blog:  http://www.hellokittyhell.com/

From August:

This gallery of mostly-Polish vintage movie posters, many for American-made films, is absolutely amazing. via: BOING BOING. These are true stunning works of art. They put our movie posters to shame.

From September:

DR. WHO in cartoon form! On the net!

From October:
On my blog about Del Close and I, I have written up my favorite LSD trip- with Duane Allman. http://subgeniusslack.blogdrive.com/archive/43.html

From November:

In 1943, Ansel Adams (1902-1984) documented the Manzanar War Relocation Center in California and the Japanese Americans interned there during World War II. The Library of Congress presents for the first time side-by-side digital scans of both Adams's 242 original negatives and his 209 photographic prints, allowing viewers to see his darkroom technique and in particular how he cropped his prints.
Image, Source: digital file from original neg.
When he offered the collection to the Library in 1965, Adams wrote, "The purpose of my work was to show how these people, suffering under a great injustice, and loss of property, businesses and professions, had overcome the sense of defeat and dispair [sic] by building for themselves a vital community in an arid (but magnificent) environment…All in all, I think this Manzanar Collection is an important historical document, and I trust it can be put to good use."

From December:

As a few of you may know, I am a fan of the Lyric Opera  http://www.lyricopera.org/   Yep. You are as apt to run into me at a DJ Tiesto event, The Decemberists, White Stripes, The Shop Boys, Regina Spektor- or the Lyric Opera. I was fortunate to see Danielle de Niese as Cleopatra, the most sexy and amazing Cleopatra I have ever seen in any medium in Handel's JULIUS CESARE (Giulio Cesare). Look at this (and yes, those are World War 1 and 2 weaponry in the backdrop), here is her war victory dance:

The days of the fat lady singing are long gone. This is opera today!
Uncut sex appeal
This opera from 1724 performed for over 4 hours is great fun and speeds by- too fast.
Just kill me now!

Here is her My Space page:  http://www.myspace.com/danielledeniese  Here is her website: http://www.danielledeniese.com/  IF  you can get a ticket  - go.

AND THERE IS A DVD OF HER PERFORMING CLEOPATRAhttp://www.amazon.com/Handel-Giulio-Cesare-William-Christie/dp/B000ESST6U I think audiences get more out of the opera now that they run subtitles of the songs at the top of the stage- and on the DVD you'll want the english lyric captions on. I think this may change the way you see/hear opera. Be amazed.

As a Lyric Opera subscriber for several years now, let me request more Danielle De Niese, doing ANYTHING. The standing ovation at the end of the show was deserved- and earned. If you'll excuse me, I have to watch this again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcVg1UtQLNQ

OK, NOW THAT'S DONE, SO HERE'S A NEW LINK FOR BEST SITE OF THE DAY:

WHY CARY GRANT STILL MATTERS

Cary Grant was one of the first people to speak out in public about LSD and how it had expanded his life. Here is what he wrote:
http://www.futurehi.net/archives/000693.html   (More on Cary Grant below, so come back!)

"I pretended to be somebody I wanted to be and I finally became that person. Or he became me. Or we met at some point." That meeting—when Archie Leach, the Bristol-born son of a part-Jewish suit presser, came to be fully assimilated by his creation, Cary Grant—amounts to one of the great events in the annals of twentieth-century culture. It created what the critic David Thomson (in A Biographical Dictionary of Film, the finest reference book on the movies) flatly declares to be "the best and most important actor in the history of the cinema." And it's a joy to watch: although the meeting was years in the making, you can actually see it come to fruition in a single movie, Leo McCarey's The Awful Truth (1937). Grant's performance in that film was, in every sense, transformative.  http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200701/schwarz-cary-grant

Surf W/ Net TV!!

There are so many cool places to watch amazing material on your computer, streaming without need for a download, that I thought ALL NIGHT SURFING should do a special theme on this phenomenon:
SPECIAL THEME: TV, FILMS, MOVIES, MUSIC ON THE NET

As kids we always thought the idea of ham radios, short and long range radios were cool. The net has provided all that and more.
This site in unbelievable. When you arrive you notice you have access to TV channels all over the world. Then you click on a category. Want to watch one of the many all horror, comedy or mystery channels? How about music? Dancehall, reggae music videos from from France or West Africa perhaps? You've only begun to search the site and you will be hooked.

Underground films more to your liking? This site comes to us courtesy of Bryan Wendorf with Chicago Underground Film Fest  http://www.ubu.com/film/

White Springs TV is public domain cartoons and movies, made for TV movies from the 1970's and 1980's ( I watched a film directed by Jonathon Demme starring Christopher Walken, Susan Sarandon and Chicago's own Aaron Freeman called WHO AM I THIS TIME? that was fantastic. Written by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr as well. Other jems abound). When you check out the schedule remember it's listed eastern time and if necessary, adjust. http://whitesprings.tv/

The best internet radio station of the year has to be WFMU out of New Jersey. From MUSIC TO SPAZZ which has insane novelty, odd and cool music to ANTIQUE PHONOGRAPH playing ancient early twenties music, and everything in between, you really should check this out. http://www.wfmu.org/table

WOLFGANG'S VAULT made headlines when the owner bought Bill Graham's garage- filled with master tapes of live shows from the 1960's on. You can hear these live shows 24/7 and the site- even the ones that you can buy are available FOR FREE streaming! http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/

OPENFLV is documenatries, films, and more from all over the world. http://openflv.com/

STAGE 6 is unbelievable. From rarely seen techno, rave, hiphop and rock videos, all in incredible DivX format- to more than I can even wade through of all types- this buries most of the tube stations out there. A must. If you haven't downloaded DivX you can do so at the site or at http://download.com . It is my favorite player. Ckick on the video when its playing to go full screen.  http://www.stage6.com/

Bob Dylan's radio show has turned out to be a treasure chest of rare and cool music. http://www.mp33pm.co.uk/2006/07/updated-links-for-all-of-bob-dylan.html

MOVIEBURST is films, TV shows and documentarys  http://www.movieburst.org/movies/War

Movies, TV and sports! http://www.wizmovies.com/

Bryan Wendorf also sends us the first art rock radio station- which started as a pirate station and is now legit:

A web forum completely devoted to sharing streaming links.  This is possibly one of the ultimate resources on the internet for finding Movies, TV Shows and Cartoons.  At any given time there is at least 1000 registered users online, usually more, and the amount of content they have managed to amass in such a short time span is stunning.  Couple that with an active group of moderators who continually take down broken videos and you've got a winning combination. Via Kazoop: http://www.movieforumz.com/

This amazing website streams videos of all genres; Bollywood, Anime, Movies, TV Series, Cartoons and the list continues.  What's so slick about Joox is their video quality and 100% working video rate. http://joox.net/

BEST SITE OF THE DAY:

Nabolister is a Movie Sharing, TV Series linking, Video-Site-Rating powerhouse of a community.  But it's more than just that.  It's also an incredibly powerful search engine that indexes virtually all known movie link websites.  It wasn't just one feature that pushed Nabolister ahead of all others, but rather a combination of all useful tools and functions that the site has to offer.  To list some wouldn't do them justice, but we'll go for it anyway.
  • Search hundreds of websites for any video
  • Excellent Community
  • Rating system for videos AND video sites
  • Content, Content, Content (Tons of it)
  • Games, Music Videos, Backstage Nabolister
