NEIMAN MARCUS INDULGENT GIFTS, BEST AIRFARE COMPARISON SITE, THE LAKOTA INDIANS HAVE LEFT THE UNITED STATES- YOU CAN TOO!
Was there a real Saint Nicholas? YES! Saint Nicholas, also known as Nikolaus in Germany and Sinterklaas (a contracted form of Sint Nicolaas) in the Netherlands and Flanders, is the common name for the historical Saint Nicholas of Myra, who lived in 4th century Byzantine Anatolia, (now in modern Turkey) and had a reputation for secret gift-giving. This is as much as is generally known about him in the West.
This is the most shocking footage of 2007, a fairground ride collapses!
Airfarewatchdog.com is the only airfare alert and comparison site that includes fares on *all* airlines, including Southwest, Skybus, Allegiant, and JetBlue. If you're relying on any other source, then you're overpaying for airfare. http://www.airfarewatchdog.com/Home/tabid/36/Default.aspx
Sitting Bull
The Lakota Indians, who gave the world legendary warriors Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, have withdrawn from treaties with the United States, leaders said Wednesday.
"We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us," long-time Indian rights activist Russell Means told a handful of reporters and a delegation from the Bolivian embassy, gathered in a church in a run-down neighborhood of Washington for a news conference. http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Descendants_of_Sitting_Bull_Crazy_Horse_1220.html
Dallas luxury retailer Neiman Marcus has unveiled this year's Christmas catalog full of over-the-top gifts—including a $1.4 million submarine. Also available are a $73,000 diamond-encrusted cell phone and a robot that can carry on a conversation for $75,000. For those looking to impress their friends, there's also a private concert with the Kirov Orchestra for about $1.6 million. Neiman Marcus, celebrating its 100th anniversary, kicks off its holiday shopping season with the catalog that offers products for $25 up to $2.3 million.

You can get a free dinner with as many calories as 10 Big Macs at the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo, Texas, if you can eat a 72-ounce sirloin steak, a baked potato, a salad, a dinner roll, and a shrimp cocktail in 60 minutes or less. And if you're craving 10 pounds of junk food on a single plate, just go to Eagle's Deli in Boston, Massachusetts, where the 10-storey Challenge Burger rises so high you practically need a ladder to eat it. Fast food makes such a savory scapegoat for our perpetual girth control failures that it's easy to forget we eat less than 20 percent of our meals at the Golden Arches and its ilk. It's also easy to forget that before America fell in love with cheap, convenient, standardized junk food, it loved cheap, convenient, independently deep-fried junk food. http://reason.com/news/show/123473.html

WHALE HUNT CAPTURED IN PICS, A LIVE CAM ON A JAPANESE TRAIN, NY TIMES: BEST IDEAS OF 2007, OTIS REDDING: SOUL LEGEND!

The NY Times picks the top ideas of 2007:
Al Gore has come under fire for making personal gain from his mission to save the planet – after charging £3,300 a minute to deliver a poorly received speech.
The former American Vice-President was also accused of being "precious" at the London event, demanding his own VIP room and ejecting journalists, despite hopes the star-studded gathering would generate publicity for the fight against global warming.
Many of the audience at last month's Fortune Forum summit were restless as Mr Gore, who has won both a Nobel Peace Prize and an Oscar for his campaigning work this year, delivered the half-hour speech that netted him £100,000.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono rare picture series
Funniest gallery of terrified kids meeting Santa you'll see this festive season
BBC Radio 2 broadcasted Dream Dylan Live, in which they aimed to put together -- from recordings spanning his entire career -- their approximation of the ultimate Bob Dylan concert. It's a neat enough concept as it is, but what made this program truly special was that it included four live recordings (obtained direct from the Dylan archives) that had never seen the light of day before. The end result is a really sweet listen. And some kind soul even made some artwork for it, which I pass along as well, in case you want to burn to CD and enjoy your Dylan in "take away" fashion, as they say in dear old Blighty.

Why don't we love science fiction?
In the 1970s, Kingsley Amis, Arthur C Clarke and Brian Aldiss were judging a contest for the best science-fiction novel of the year. They were going to give the prize to Grimus, Salman Rushdie's first novel. At the last minute, however, the publishers withdrew the book from the award. They didn't want Grimus on the SF shelves. "Had it won," Aldiss, the wry, 82-year-old godfather of British SF, observes, "he would have been labelled a science-fiction writer, and nobody would have heard of him again."

Perhaps it's a vestige of our rough-edged frontier past, or maybe it's a legacy of the temperance movement of the early 20th century. Whatever the origin, it's been accepted for decades in the United States that bars, pubs, taverns, saloons, and lounges are not the sorts of places one goes with a kid. It's different in Europe. Some English pubs in summer are full of families. In Central Europe, tots take ceramic pitchers to the local beer hall to fetch dad's draft. In this country, the demand for kid-friendly pubs is still far greater than the supply, but Oakland has a couple of places where junior won't draw dirty looks from childless hipsters or run afoul of an angry drunk on his sixth Jack and Coke. http://beerblog.genx40.com/archives/2007/july/kidsandthepub

The Pinball Hall of Fame is an attempt by the members of the Las Vegas Pinball Collectors Club to house and display the world's largest pinball collection, open to the public. A not-for-profit corporation was established to further this cause. The games belong to one club member (Tim Arnold), and range from 1950s up to 1990s pinball machines. Since it is a non-profit museum, older games from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s are the prevelant, as this was the 'heyday' of pinball. http://www.pinballmuseum.org/

For several decades feminists had an unusual alliance which has been forgotten to now. The Ku Klux Klan backed prohibition, allowed a woman to be a Grand Dragon, came up with the slogan "The hand that rocks the cradle rocks the world", backed the vote for women, had early feminists speak at their rallies like the head of Planned Parenthood. But that's not all. When women weren't allowed to have their own bank accounts, own property, own their own business- Klan women could! An amazing story of a forgotten part of feminist history

Margaret Sanger founded PLANNED PARENTHOOD
Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood, in a letter to Clarence Gamble in 1939 wrote,
"We should hire three or four colored ministers, preferably with social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities. The most successful educational approach to the Negro is through religions appeal. We don't want the word to get out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members."

Julian Bell has written a tremendous history of world art, one that will inevitably be compared with Gombrich’s The Story of Art, published nearly sixty years ago. Since then image-making technologies that seemed mature have changed and expanded their reach. In 1950 we lived in an image flood. We are now, as Bell puts it, in an image jam. http://www.lrb.co.uk/v29/n23/camp01_.html

An anti-Semitic church formed by white supremacists has abandoned its neo-Nazi imagery, such as swastikas, to make its message more palatable, a change that a leading Jewish group called an attempt to "sanitize hatred."
The group banned the use of Nazi uniforms, red arm bands and similar regalia because they were an instant turnoff to people who might otherwise be open to the church's teachings, including the belief that white Anglo-Saxons _ not Jews _ are God's chosen people in the Bible. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/11/29/AR2007112901349.html

The movies made during the studio era—what the cineastes have dubbed "the classical Hollywood cinema"—are, along with jazz, America's best creative work from the late 1920s to about 1950. But although those pictures are revered, they're contested. Products of a system run by five vertically integrated companies, they spark ardent and surprisingly nasty debates—about the relationships between art and commerce, convention and innovation, individual and collaborative effort, administrative constraint and creative freedom. These boil down to a single argument: Were the great pictures made because of, or despite, that system?
