Surf W/ Best Links Of 2008!

Years ago I would email to pals odd and strange links I found on the net in emails until someone pointed out I could post them on a blog. So was born ALL NIGHT SURFING. Here is the best of the past year, Dec of 2007 to Nov of 2008. If you are new here, sign up for updates on the left by entering your email into the REGISTER box.

The best of the year 2008

The best music video:
In Brazil in the shanty towns built of cardboard and wooden planks, where there aren't so much streets as corridors and at night the police never come, the drug dealers will hold outdoor dance shows. The patrons, if they don't like the baille funk they hear take out their guns and fire in the air. The song PAPER PLANES by MIA is about as close to that scene as I want to get.

THE BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR:
Without question: THE DARK KNIGHT

Where the hell is Matt? This guy is why I have ALL NIGHT SURFING. He spent 14 months going to over 40 countrys to film himself dancing. Wow. Oddly compelling and moving.

The best sculptures of the year

The greatest hero now living is......

Capitalism may deliver wealth and happiness but it does not inspire us. Socialism continues to inspire, despite having never delivered on any of its promises. Why does one inspire, and one not? How do we choose our heroes? Consider:

Which of the following people would you say is the most admirable: Mother Teresa, Bill Gates or Norman Borlaug? And which do you think is the least admirable? For most people, it's an easy question. Mother Teresa, famous for ministering to the poor in Calcutta, has been beatified by the Vatican, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and ranked in an American poll as the most admired person of the 20th century. Bill Gates, infamous for giving us the Microsoft dancing paper clip and the blue screen of death, has been decapitated in effigy in "I Hate Gates" Web sites and hit with a pie in the face. As for Norman Borlaug . . . who the heck is Norman Borlaug?

Norman Borlaug has saved 1 billion lives according to the UN. Oprah Winfrey opened a school for several hundred kids. Guess who is more well known, has been the subject of thousands of articles, has had documentaries and specials done on their life? There isn't even a documentary on Borlaug!

Yet a deeper look might lead you to rethink your answers. Borlaug, father of the "Green Revolution" that used agricultural science to reduce world hunger, has been credited with saving a billion lives, more than anyone else in history. Gates, in deciding what to do with his fortune, crunched the numbers and determined that he could alleviate the most misery by fighting everyday scourges in the developing world like malaria, diarrhea and parasites. Mother Teresa, for her part, extolled the virtue of suffering and ran her well-financed missions accordingly: their sick patrons were offered plenty of prayer but harsh conditions, few analgesics and dangerously primitive medical care.

This is great! The top 20 record industry screw ups of all time! For example:
#19 The industry kills the single—and begins its own slow demise
In the early ’80s, the music industry began to phase out vinyl singles in favor of cassettes and later, CDs. Then, since it costs the same to manufacture a CD single as a full album, they ditched the format almost altogether. But they forgot that singles were how fans got into the music-buying habit before they had enough money to spend on albums. The end result? Kids who expect music for free. “Greed to force consumers to buy an album [resulted] in the loss of an entire generation of record consumers,” says Billboard charts expert Joel Whitburn. “People who could only afford to buy their favorite hit of the week were told it wasn’t available as a single. Instead, they stopped going to record shops and turned their attention to illegally downloading songs.”
Unintended consequence The Eagles still top the album charts.

The Ayn Rand Lexicon is now online, a mini encyclopedia of Objectivism. For example, her thoughts on abortion:

An embryo has no rights. Rights do not pertain to a potential, only to an actual being. A child cannot acquire any rights until it is born. The living take precedence over the not-yet-living (or the unborn).

Abortion is a moral right—which should be left to the sole discretion of the woman involved; morally, nothing other than her wish in the matter is to be considered. Who can conceivably have the right to dictate to her what disposition she is to make of the functions of her own body?

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has released its long-awaited report on the collapse of World Trade 7 following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. "Our take-home message today is that the reason for the collapse of World Trade Center 7 is no longer a mystery," NIST lead investigator Shyam Sunder told journalists at this morning's press conference in Gaithersburg, Md. "WTC 7 collapsed because of fires fueled by office furnishings. It did not collapse from explosives or from diesel fuel fires."

Did the atomic bombs end the war with Japan? "Everyone" in America knows they did, so it is something of a shock to discover they didn't! Americans after the war had no idea Japan had been trying to surrender for months, but the Russians hid the information from us. So what group did end the war? Top 10 oddest Japanese products:

At the beginning of the eighteenth century the Comanches were a small tribe of hunter-gatherers in New Mexico. Once they acquired the use of horses, in three generations they evolved into the 'Spartans of the plains' and provided the fiercest of all Native American resistance to the Anglo-Hispanic conquest of the American West. For a hundred years from 1750, the Comanches dominated New Mexico, Texas and even parts of Louisiana and northern Mexico. As Amerindians, the Comanches were even more impressive than the Aztecs or the Iroquois, for until the American Civil War they largely forced Europeans to bend the knee, and did so moreover when the European imperialist impulse was at its height. Although the word 'empire' may be author's hyperbole, the Comanches ruled an extensive domain that worked on a melange of kinship ties, trade, diplomacy, extortion and violence

So why were the Comanches so exceptional among American Indians?

THE USS LIBERTY incident. The true story. Unmarked Israeli planes attacked a U.S. spy ship during the 6 day war against Egypt, even firing on boats of wounded sailors. The true facts are still classified in the U.S., but they have been released in the UK. After the attack on the boat, U.S. jets with nuclear bombs were on their way to Cairo to drop them in retaliation. (President LBJ had created a fake incident to start the Viet Nam war, so he has a record of doing this). One of the most shocking, devastating documentaries you will ever see. If you can watch this without a tear in your eye you are a stronger person than me. Send this one around, if you can't watch it on your computer find one you can.  I am always fascinated by conspiracy groups who prefer speculative conspiracies over PROVEN ones. This, is now a proven one. Devastating.

In 1962 Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney and Peter Lorre appeared on ROUTE 66 in a episode called LIZARD LEG. Here it is, and it was the last time Karloff donned the Frankenstein look! I miss these actors......
ROUTE 66 was originally supposed to be about Jack Kerouac, but talks broke down, so the producers just stole the idea! That said, it was still a fun show, and LIZARD LEG is a genuine classic!
