Surf W/Catfish Collins, R.I.P.
GOODBYE PHELPS CATFISH COLLINS
Phelps 'Catfish' Collins (L) and Tony Wilson (R)
On guitar, the forward thinking Phelps 'Catfish' Collins filled in, pushing the James Brown band in a new direction.
His choppy, spiky sound became the definitive technique for a funk guitarist. Working with James Brown for some time, 'Catfish' Collins played alongside his better known brother Bootsy in the band.
Never quite given the credit he deserved, the influence of 'Catfish' Collins can be felt everywhere. The guitarist's technique filtered through Gang Of Four, Orange Juice and more, and can be heard in groups such as Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party and more.
Later working with Parliament and Funkadelic, 'Catfish' Collins remained musically active for some time afterwards.
The general public may have not known his name, but they sure as hell knew his riffs. He put the P in P-Funk
